Is GAF too strict?

Several people in a recent thread said they wished that everyone at the Republican National Convention would die. Some even said they wished all Republicans would die. And none on them got banned. Pretty shocking that none of them got banned. And it makes GAF look bad.

But given enough time I guarantee they all die.

Along with me and everyone else.

By the way, does anyone know why I can't access the event reminders page? It says it could be due to several reasons but only lists two.

I can't access it either, so it's not a permission thing, it's probably just disabled server side.

Something in this thread reminded me of a post I made some years.....and while browsing, I realized how lax GAF was about the word "bitch" back then.

I probably called Ann Coulter that more times than I can remember. lol I literally hated her.

I'm not even a republican and I find that thread completely disgusting.

Looked like it was mainly full of conservatives trying to be as outraged as possible. Nobody wished all republicans would die.

It's definitely not perfect but I much prefer it to the rest of the internet. I wish we could just ban people from certain threads instead of completely.

We would prefer that posters bring their concerns about topics or individual posters' behavior to us in Private Messages rather than reporting them publicly in this topic.

No, I understood that and I've stricken 'bitch' from my vocabulary on GAF.

I'm just saying, it feels inconsistent. I've seen it used a few other times since then by other users, and either no one notices or no one cares. I'm not gonna dig up examples of it cause I don't want anyone to get banned, I'm just saying... how hard and fast is this rule?

It may be that the posts you are talking about were banned and you did not see it, were not banned because they were acceptable, or were not banned because they were not noticed. It is impossible to say without actually seeing them.

I was banned for two weeks for posting "Nuclear defence force has arrived" in the thread about mutant butterfly's found in Fukushima, when people were trying to downplay the facts.

Yes GAF has become too strict, or perhaps just a few of the mods are abusing their powers?.

From Stumpokapow's Banned Sites, Inappropriate Posts, and Memes FAQ:

Innapropriate Posts & Banned Memes

- Thread Whining / Respect to Others. It's not that "Haters gonna hate" is a banned meme, it's that it's often used to be flippant and dismissive to other posters. If someone is trying to explain what they think about something, either treat them with respect or don't reply at all. So when you post "u mad", "deal with it", "haters gonna hate", "the GAF hivemind", "the usual suspects", "but GAF said x and now they're saying y!!!", "entitled whiners" or anything else that suggests that you don't care what other people think, you may be banned if it is taking away from discussion. This is getting to be a pretty big problem, and it's probably the single largest category of bans these days. If you don't want to discuss something, you don't need to post.

This also includes things like "weekend gaf", "sounds like a GameFAQs threads", "tl;dr", "cool story, bro", "Neat" and associated image macros, "who gives a shit", etc. This list is not exhaustive, and using variants of these statements such as "bold please" and "f*ck the haters" is not a good way to avoid getting banned, as the problem is the general message/intent of your post, not the specific words you are using. If you think a particular thread is lowering a quality of the forum, PM a moderator about it.

And while not specifically mentioned, this includes dismissive "defense force" posts. You were not treated unfairly.

Kind of a localized Karma system rather than a global one. Give people actively involved in a thread the opportunity to mute down a poster. To save resource on the server side, the vote history could be allowed to natuarally expire on some TTL so people would eventually be able to contribute into an OT after they've had an oportunity to reconsider their reasons for posting.

I've said some stupid shit before and got away with it simply because of the way I presented said stupid shit. If you're a total asshole, GAF is definitely too strict.

Just felt compelled to quote you
The lack of a capitalized 'a' makes me read your name as Blackashay which sounds much more exotic.

Do mods get a special view of the mobile version for getting to the mod forum and doing other modly things?

I once asked Kagari to do something for me (change a title I think) and she replied something like "no mod tools on mobile".

EDIT: Also last page they talk about Gromph banning somebody because Evilore couldn't on his phone as he travels.

Thanks for the responce, but I was very surprised. I've been on GAF since like 1999 and never have I seen or heard about bans for posting memes (especially ones not specifically listed as banned).

I'll just have to be more careful and serious from now on I guess.

It's usually pretty obvious what will get you banned or may get you banned. Almost every time I was banned, I thought to myself before I think my post was on the edge and some mod might take offence, and debated whether to edit or not. It's always a debate of whether to remain passionate about your side of an argument or to edit it out to not risk it. Than of course there's just the stupid stuff that will get you banned no matter what and I don't think I've posted anything like that.

The worst is when you think you may be banned, refresh the thread a couple times and don't get the banned notice, so you think you're fine, and you end up making a large reply to a thread and getting the banned message on post. I was more offended I couldn't get my last statement in than the actual ban haha.

I'm way late to the thread and haven't read through it, but I like the rules GAF has. IMO, you can really say whatever you want except hate speech. The rules are minimal, and I think the ones that are there are appropriate for good conversation. Even the silly stuff, like console wars stuff, is generally filtered and leads to better discussion IMO.

I feel "bitch" is a lot more offensive than "dick", which to my ear sounds like "doofus" or "unpolite".

Same here, never thought dick was a particularly insulting word, while bitch can be a pretty fucking awful thing to say depending on the context.

I like the rules here, it keeps the place cleaner. Sometimes it might be a bit too strict, but overall I like it.

The memes should be restricted to sports threads. There's nothing like the tasting the sweet, bitter tears of users when your favorite team/person wins :)

Dick is the abbreviation of Richard.

i felt the same way until the "grow one of your forehead" in that Finnish thread earlier today. Man, they have some creative profanities.

Being banned can also depend on whether you're on the "popular side" or not of an arguement (i.e. Sony vs Nintendo switched a couple times so far on which side was favourable). A couple years ago, it was very unfavourable to argue against the DS in any thread so I got banned for a couple posts like this:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17034499&postcount=789

and this:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12466834&postcount=213

Takes me back. :) I'm not sure if duckroll banned me for first one or whether it was Dragona, but funny part was duckroll reduced my ban from Himuro on that second example :) What's interesting, is I think more people would now agree with my entire argument of the DS ruining the japanese video game industry.

I'm also permanently banned from posting in any video game sales threads ever again.

I know someone who was permanently banned for saying that they hoped a certain game would be released on a certain console eventually. I think that's a bit much.

Several of us have records from before we were moderators, but I do not think I have ever heard of a moderator being banned while s/he was a moderator.
Not for a really long time. I don't remember if SunkisTim got banned or just demodded after a couple days on the job eons ago.

While i sometimes think that GAF is too strict...when you think objectively about it: This is a part of what makes this place so great!

I know I've said this more than once. Maybe it's about the context in which it's said.

"This is an amazing game and it pains me greatly that I can't experience it" vs. "Console A sucks and this game should be on console B instead"

I never understood why wanting a port was viewed dimly as 'port begging' or why it's bannable. It seems so extreme to make wanting a game to come to a certain platform a bannable offense. I'm guessing it's some system wars thing from before my time.

Are we capable of banning other mods, even if we are not supposed to? Or does the system disallow it?

It was probably either a junior ban or someone at the end of a very, very, very long rope.
