What is it that people enjoy about MMA/Cage fighting

I don't mean to sound condescending. It's not the actual exchange of blows that bother me but when a man drops down (knocked off before he hits the ground awkwardly), I'm genuinely worried for him. But then his opponent gets on top and volleys punch after punch into the motionless figure on the ground whilst the crowd cheer? What am I missing here? How do fans reconcile the excitement of the contest with seeing someone on the floor in such a state?

because many times they are just fine at that point?

I find certain submissions far more gruesome.

edit: my response doesn't answer the thread question but it did match the text of the thread.
What I enjoy is the chess match, skill, and any second finish excitement.

boxing is worse in terms of damage inflicted imo

I find MMA boring because it often devolves into two really tired guys not moving around much holding each other on the floor.

boxing and mma fans are probably going to destroy me for those opinions ...

It's easy to watch, it's brutal, and it's primal. Compare that to boxing which is much more tactical and strategic.

Its like human cock fighting!

Isn't boxing actually more dangerous because of the thicker gloves?

Hell even HighSchool/College/Pro Football is a lot more dangerous than MMA. There's probably a lot more meatheads in football too. If I had a kid I'd rather him go train BJJ or something than play PeeWee football and have some other kid whose dumbfuck parent who taught his son to lead with his head and try to knock other kids out cold put his life in danger.

I don't understand why people find it fun to watch two men hug on the ground for half an hour. Every UFC or MMA fight I've ever watched starts with them circling each other for twenty seconds, until somebody goes in for the huggibears and we watch them embrace on the floor until the bell rings and they get ready to do it again for another couple of rounds.

Football is more dangerous too, probably more dangerous than boxing even.

At least MMA fighters aren't putting shotguns to their chest because their brain is so fucked up they're in a constant state of depression.

From what I've seen the refs are pretty quick to stop the fights, at least in the UFC.

What surprises me is that people even find this sport entertaining, half of the fights I've watched they were either hugging each other on the floor or against the cage.

My problem too,can't stand it.

Because the Japanese did amazing freak show fights and had amazing production and event quality instead of the junky early UFC and it was in a ring and was a lot different than Cage Fighitng.

Google Pride FC theme and contrast to UFC theme music
Screaming Pride Lady and Bruce Buffer
Google Genki Sudo intros and Pride FC promo intros look for fedor vs Cro cop.
Google Genki Sudo vs Butterbean
Soccer Kicks!

False. In sanctioned MMA fights are stopped as soon as a fighter is no longer able to intelligently defend himself.

Boxing will forever be the better sport. You're right OP, it's pretty sickening to watch someone being punched in the head while knocked out. I asked my MMA friends about this, and they said its because the fight isn't over until the ref calls it. As if an unconscious man on the floor is going to fight back. The resulting cheers from seeing an unconscious man being elbowed and punched in the face is unbelievable.

Like everything else, there's great moments and there's snoozefests.

Rabbit shots are illegal just like in boxing, so I don't know what shit you're watching. And the fight doesn't continue if someone is unconscious. You're badly misinformed.

You've never really watched MMA if you think it's just juijitsu stand offs...early UFC was but that's because the Gracie's could just clown the shit out of any one because the talent pool was Tank Abbot and the Korean Guy...Joe Son, currently serving life.

The other thing is like I said the Japanese just presented it better, you had a lot less boring matches and one plus was how it grew out of Shooto and Pro Wrestling so it was always heavy on production and entertainment quality

I guess it doesn't bother me much because fights don't last long and are usually stopped quickly, and it doesn't seem like these guys would suffer the sustained mental damage from the repeated head strikes you see in boxing or even football. I'm not an avid watcher though, usually just A Silva or Jon Jones and a handful of other guys I'll watch here and there.

Some fights suck, some fights are amazing. It's the same as any sport.

Because MMA and cagefighting are for unskilled fighters while boxing requires years of perfecting your craft.

you really have no idea what you're talking about.

for the unintiated, here's an example:

Here is MMA legend Dan "Hendo" Henderson in the white trunks knocking out some random chunky scrub from Russia. I can't even remember the guy's name, maybe someone can help me out. Anyway, notice how after Hendo knocks the dude's block off and his fat, out of shape carcass slams to the mat, the ref immediately steps in to stop it. If this were boxing, he would have been given a standing 8 count to gather himself and proceed to potentially suffer more damage and blows to his already sensitive brain. If it were football, he could have lied to his coach about his symptoms and be allowed back in the game to, again, cause more damage to his tender brain. MMA saved this Russian can's life so that he could be healthy enough to grace future shitty cards with his presence.

Love the strategy employed by the fighters. Most of these guys are superior athletes with amazing skills.

Lol at fat Russian slob comment

MMA also has the worst fanbase of any "sport.". At least it makes it easier to avoid them in public when they insist on wearing those ugly Tapout and Affliction shirts.

If a person goes limp as they're going to the ground the refs are usually there immediately calling the fight over. Was this recent that you saw this? Hell, if the guy is dazed and can't defend himself, it's usually a punch or 2 before the ref is there calling the fight over.

I agree that sometimes the refs should be a little quicker to separate them or stand them up if they aren't working towards a submission or an opening. Other times there's actually a lot happening where it takes time to appreciate and understand. A good commentator can help with that.

Do you have any more stupid, uninformed things to say or is that it? Might as well get all the stupid out of your system all in one shot now.

MMA fans get really pissed when you insist the sport is nothing more than two shirtless guys snuggling on the mat. It's funny.

Why are you trolling the Fedor fans? lol

Personally I think MMA should be illegal (probably boxing too) because it's barbaric and the brain injuries suffered today will start impacting former fighters years down the line.

That said, it's not hard to see why people enjoy it.

I haven't really gotten into it (I like boxing) but MMA is a very "pure" sport in that if you win, you win. There are very few rules and arbitration. As an athlete, I find that incredibly attractive.

Aesthetically, it hasn't done all that much for me, but I hope I can get over that.

LOL so many ignorant posts in here.

I don't even follow the sport, only a couple of occasions when there is some hype for a fight, I only watched a couple of fights and you can instantly tell there is something more to it than just random people cage fighting like some here instantly suggest.
