What is it that people enjoy about MMA/Cage fighting

I like learning about all the different techniques and how they perform against each other. I was in Taekwondo when I was younger and I wrestled in middle and high school, so it's relevant to my past hobbies.

Following my favorite fighter's careers.

Seeing people beat the shit out of each other is fun. Why do I find it fun? Who knows. It's why some people enjoy big hits in Football and Hockey. Of course you're concerned about their health afterward, but they're paid and refereed for their safety.

I've wondered the same many times myself. And I like sports, physical sports, like hockey and football. Boxing is okay, too. But the few times I tried to/was forced to watch MMA I was bored to tears.

Excuse to vent natural homosexual feelings. Men naturally want to look at and enjoy the male physical form, but it would be "weird" - so the only way to express that side of their pysche is through team and contact sports.

You do have to know the techniques to appreciate the ground game. It's more about manoeuvring to gain an advantageous position rather than using pure physical strength to overpower someone.

I admit I know next to nothing about MMA, but I do know that this is my favorite MMA-ist

Watching a good fight. Same reason people like sports. A good battle. A good brawl. It's a throwback to our nature. We're creatures of combat and make no mistake...it's still very much a part of our makeup as a species.

I think the fact we harness it and let men (and women) fight in a controlled setting that's as safe as the sport allows is a good thing.

What boggles my mind are the people that hate it. And I mean, I don't watch MMA. I mean if my friends have a fight on I'll watch with them but otherwise I don't watch. But these people that ACTIVELY hate it. I don't see the point in putting so much energy into something you don't like, but that's me....

I'm heterosexual but I admire a well toned male body.

MMA is human competition distilled to it's purest form. It takes away all the toys (footballs, wooden bats, etc), heavy gloves and padding, and tests two humans in the most basic and yet infinitely complex way.
I'm a progressive, pacifist, anti-gun, liberal arts salad eater who hasn't missed any major MMA event in the last 10 years.

This thread has everything I expected in it:

-Someone saying boxing is better
-Talking about how barbaric and brutal it is
-Someone saying all MMA fans are idiots
-Someone saying that all MMA fights are wrestlefests
-Pride
-American Legend Dan 'Hollywood H-Bomb Hendo' Henderson knocking out that fat can

it started out fun because it was a martial arts style vs martial arts style, now its whoever can use the rules best to their advantage. its still fun because sometimes you get contrasting styles against each other, but most of the time its whoever knows how to hit or where to hit and run.

That "chunky scrub" you described is actually one of the greatest MMA fighters in history. I hope your being sarcastic.

Isn't Dan Henderson a former Olympian? Is it pretty common in MMA to match up American Olympians against sloppy fat amateur "tough guys" from around the world so they can annihilate them? Hard to say it's much of a sport then -- more of a circus sideshow.

Lmao.

...and for those who watch female MMA?

I've watched very little MMA, so I admit I'm not really in much of a position to comment on the sport. I've also played very little of the UFC game, only part of the demo if I recall correctly, and it seemed no matter what you do, it always ended up being a hugfest, which weirded me out somewhat.
The only thing that really bothers me is the way the people who watch it in my area seem to act. It's like because they've saw a couple of fights they're all pro and want to start beating the shit out of people at the drop of a hat (though that may be down to them just being violent idiots to begin with.)
Tbh, my stance on most contact sports is that they should be VERY heavily regulated and the like, because for the most part they're completely barbaric. I really don't see the appeal in watching grown men beat on each other until someone's bleeding. If anything, people should certainly focus on non-violent sports such as swimming etc.. There's enough violence going around as it is, without things like this being televised and promoted the hell out of.

for the unintiated, here's an example:

Here is MMA legend Dan "Hendo" Henderson in the white trunks knocking out some random chunky scrub from Russia. I can't even remember the guy's name, maybe someone can help me out. Anyway, notice how after Hendo knocks the dude's block off and his fat, out of shape carcass slams to the mat, the ref immediately steps in to stop it. If this were boxing, he would have been given a standing 8 count to gather himself and proceed to potentially suffer more damage and blows to his already sensitive brain. If it were football, he could have lied to his coach about his symptoms and be allowed back in the game to, again, cause more damage to his tender brain. MMA saved this Russian can's life so that he could be healthy enough to grace future shitty cards with his presence.[/QUOTE]

lol

I'm not a fan and I dont watch, but i do think it is a great show of athleticism, toughness, and skill. If you are denying this, you're a silly fellow who has probably never had the courage to do any one on one sport, let alone anything in a fighting contest.

I'd recommend people watch these fights:

Frankie Edgar v Gray Maynard 2 & 3 (UFC 125, 136)
Shogun Rua v Dan Henderson (UFC 139)
Georges St Pierre v Frank Trigg (UFC 54)
Wanderlei Silva v Chuck Liddell (UFC 79)

Just a mix of different types of fights that people who don't know anything can appreciate.

I would add in Chan Sung Jung vs. Dustin Poirier for a more recent fight

MMA has one main purpose in our household:
if we're too lazy to pop-in a porno to play in the background while we're goin' at it, MMA is a great substitute. Either that, or it inspires us to get busy in the first place.

MMA is perhaps the closest thing to gay porn that you can get on cable TV. It's awesome.

Uninformed shouldn't speak.

And yet, they are always the first to speak. Funny how that works. The eagerness to jump out and shout about stuff you know nothing about. Im no MMA fan, but the ignorance of the sport in this thread is hilarious, even to me with my loose understanding of the rule sets and regulations. Its very clear alot of people don't know shit about the sport and are just sort of 'filling in the blanks' with bullshit and claiming that they know how it works.

Won't someone think of the wrestling fans???

I don't mean to sound condescending. It's not the actual exchange of blows that bother me but when a man drops down (knocked off before he hits the ground awkwardly), I'm genuinely worried for him. But then his opponent gets on top and volleys punch after punch into the motionless figure on the ground whilst the crowd cheer? What am I missing here? How do fans reconcile the excitement of the contest with seeing someone on the floor in such a state?

I like MMA because of all the different fighting styles.Getting ktfo on the ground is just more realistic to me and another reason I like it.

Wrestling (WWF, etc) has too many fatties, females, and drama bullshit. There's no comparison.
(unless you're referring to real wrestling, in which case it's a close second to MMA, which has less clothing going for it..)

MMA - excepting perhaps the larger weight classes - has two well-defined men grunting & grindin' it out, no bullshit involved. Just mute Joe Rogan's annoying-ass voice and let the fun begin!

How ignorant people on the first page alone are. If you don't like it after watching it half a dozen times, fine, don't watch but don't act like you got the sport figured out already.

That's what people do about a lot of sports. You guys shouldn't be all surprised about it.

Because I like martial arts, and quite frankly, the top of the heap in MMA are the best fighters in the world.

Put Mike Tyson in his prime in there with a BW wrestler like Urijah Faber, and Urijah would beat him.

Lol @ Ninja Scooter's trolling attempts.

i just watched a couple of these, or at least highlights on youtube. i would never say this sport doesnt involve strategy and skill. i have never participated, and you can call me a pussy, but watching it i wince to much to really find it enjoyable.

that Georges St Pierre v Frank Trigg match was just pure dominance. i was expecting some big reversal or come back or something to make the outcome more in doubt.
