The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I hope Vinny and Brad don't just listen to Jeff. I'm getting the impression his opinion is overriding because the other guys haven't and/or won't play the game.

Has anybody on the bombcrew actually ever been really into a recent MMO before though? I don't think it's just jeff, it's just not a genre for the entire crew.

Vinny can't be swayed by any neg comments. If he's interested, he will check it out. :)

Oh c'mon. Wasn't Guild Wars 2 supposed to be the interesting one? It's just an MMO.

I like the way they handle combat but overall it doesn't seem to change MMOs on a fundamental level, except when it comes to the pricing model.

I've never successfully been sucked into an MMO but the character creation and customization stuff has always fascinated me, so stripping out the monthly subscription part and not turning the game into a pay-to-win type of free to play game was enough for me to give it a try.

They skipped my favorite part of MMO quick looks... doing horrible things using the character creation.

Jeff is REALLY uninformed about the game. He's selling it as a traditional MMO, but he's both playing it wrong (dodging is vital to survival) and didn't really cover the huge differences GW2 has over all other MMOs. I highly recommend checking out the OT for more information: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=487844

I've been playing GW2 pretty much non-stop for the last few days. It's a fantastic game and does a lot to streamline the MMO experience.

Quick Look: Journey Collector's Edition Brad/Patrick (22:09)

just covers the extra stuff.
Oh, I'd be all over that if I didn't have all the games already. :/

Also I would've expected Cloud to be in there as an extra game, it's the direct predecessor to both Flow and Flower.

edit: Brad and Patrick's reactions are pretty over the top. Sit these guys down in front of Kongregate or Newgrounds for a couple hours and they probably wouldn't be so weirded out by experimental and unfinished game prototypes. That is, if they didn't play it up for the video.

It has some interesting and unique things to it definitely, but it is not the next "WoW" juggernaut many were hoping for. Hella good game, and with no monthly fee, worth your time.

It's sad, but I think so far, the best thing about this game is the loading screens between areas, because the art is amazing. Wish the game was as spectacular to look at art style wise as the drawings its based on. Graphically it's a pretty game, but the art style isn't that bad ass to me.

They didn't do a great job of showing GW 2 at its best in my opinion. Sort of a boring QL for what is a pretty fun game.

That being said, I'd agree with zlatko. I don't think it's the second coming that some were hoping for.

I'm still early on, though. Need to play some more.

So you think we aren't capable of looking at something (for an hour no less) and deciding for ourselves if we want to play it or not?

If TERA, The Secret World and Guild Wars 2 aren't enough to get their hooks into any of the guys, I'm not sure exactly what could at this point in the MMO space other than something that isn't really an MMO at all.

They've always seemed like guys who are more "Play one and move onto the next" (and they kind of have to be), so its not too surprising. Guild Wars 2 is probably the best MMO since WoW and does a bunch of things to improve the MMO formula but if you don't like the inherent qualities of what makes an MMO what it is, GW2 isn't going to change that.

Hell, any game that will probably won't be recognizable as an MMO anymore.

Bungie's new MMO in a console space.

I'm expecting big things from them...

Guild Wars 2 seems fine, but didn't exactly blow me away. Just a very competently done MMO, albeit a bit bland.

If you listen to them talk about MMOs on the podcast this is exactly what they want. They want something that just goes all in on all new ideas instead of strapping new bits on to the tried and true MMO framework.

I sort of agree with them and am in the same boat. I tried out GW2's beta and was bored to death within 2 hours.

The last MMO I got the impression they played at length was TOR, which ironically is probably the most, and they've said as much, WoW like MMO of any as of late.

Depends on the game and how it is being presented.

So sometimes they're human and sometimes a robot?

"Guess whaaaaaat? I AM NOT A ROBOT! A ROBOT!"

No but seriously, your point makes no sense. Many of the staff in podcasts have gone over games that their review wasn't nice to, like Patrick with I Am Alive, everyone in staff other than Ryan not liking Max Payne 3, Ryan with Dark Souls, Vinny with Homefront, etc.

i don't think the point is so much that you and vinny are mindless robots so much the fairly innocuous idea that having a person with certain predetermined opinions about something present it to you in a certain fashion could heavily color your impression of something

i don't play guild wars or mmos so I don't really know if Jeff's being super jaded or what, but you're taking a harmless statement in the worst possible way just to get upset at a gaf user again

wow, that looks fantastic.

I don't like the way it plays though. All of the attacks are mapped to a single button (for absolutely no reason), and it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between a hold and a tap. So right away it lacks that Super Meatboy precision. I kept making the same mistake Patrick was, in instead of holding B to launch I was pushing up and B, which seems to do a pointless animation that just gets you killed.

That's his favourite pastime.

You can't be serious.

But he's right, in a way.
If someone showed me GW2's WvW and said "it's capture and hold pvp, who cares about this tutorial on mechanics that are apparently so obvious" I sure as hell wouldn't want to play it (or, at least, not that mode).

Good thing WvW is not that at all.

I am a big fan of Giant Bomb. I enjoy all of their videos and content. They are entertaining and very informative. Not only are they one of the best sites about video games, but with their writings and video productions, they rival any website on any topic.

They are also very funny.

You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you?

:( I wish Brad didn't just respond to the negative stuff.

As someone who has played each of those in their beta, each is missing something to make it truly something special.

Tera has an awesome combat system, maybe the best in an MMO, but its quest structure and reliance on the holy trinity keep it in the tired and true MMO formula.

Secret World has an awesome world, story, and investigation quests, but the combat is your standard boring manage cool down MMO fare.

I like what Guild wars is doing with skill systems, progression, and getting rid of the holy trinity but the story, quest structure, and combat isn't anything revolutionary from other MMOs.

If someone could combine all the strengths from these three games they'd have a hit on their hands.

Guild Wars 2 looks... pretty much like I expected.

Those game jam things, while entertaining at a glance, probably wouldn't prompt me to get the journey collector's edition thing. Still, for everything contained in that package, that's a really nice deal. Need to play journey again now.

They Bleed Pixels looks okay. I think that could be a game I'd pick up in the future. The checkpoint system looks like one of the best and worst parts of the game. I could easily see myself getting frustrated at a poor placement, on my part.
