Mass Effect 3: Leviathan Trailer [Out Now]

Took a lot of screen shots tonight during my second playthrough of Leviathan. ME3 is a sharp lookin' game, IQ-wise, and Leviathan carries that, but some of the texture work is not so good, which is in keeping with the rest of the series.

Next-gen ME is going to look amazing though, I'm sure.

BioWare's Mass Effect artists are excellent, even if the games are technologically weak. I'm hoping the series retains its trademark look even with BioWare likely shifting over to Frostbite 2.

That ocean looked gorgeous.

Oh man ME on Frostbite 2 would be wondrous. I don't worry about the art style staying consistent after the jump to a new engine because the art of ME usually took precedence over the engine. The ME games didn't really look conspicuously Unreal to me like most other Unreal Engine games do.

Bioware must keep the grainy 70's sci-fi show filter!!!! that's all I'm asking.

And Frostbite 2 bringing destructible environments would be ace.

I had to add, that I found the conversations between romancing Tali and Garrus, and the last conversation with Liara on Normandy, entertaining and humorous.

I'm still pissed, that the canyon segment's framerate was so bad it made aiming nearly impossible. It ruined an otherwise great moment in the game.

I liked how the first zone looked from the outside, with the big invisible shield protecting us from debris and when they did hit the shield, you could see the sun rays going through the part the debris crashed, it's nicely done.

Only the 2D, badly animated, Harvesters in the distance during the canyon level were bad.

After seeing humans in Need for Speed: The Run on FB2, I'd rather Bioware go to UE4 for future games.

So I guess
Ann dies if you do the two renegade interrupts? That's what Vega implied after the mission was over anyway.

Played an hour or so of this last night and I have to say although I´ve been pretty vocal about my hate for ME3 I´m having a really good time with this.

Not sure if it´s actually better than ME3 or if ME3 wasn´t so terrible after all.

I would say the latter one but I bought this DLC just haven't played it yet.

I am excited to play the Leviathan though.

I think the ending clouded your judgement a little of the rest of the game lmao.

I always said the ending wasn´t even my problem with the game. It was that cutting corners/cash in mentality that was really apparent.

Less dialogue options/ "horde mode" at the end of every level/ complete lack of interesting sidemissions with planets you could actually land on/ only one hub and so on...

I suppose that the fact this DLC isn't completely combat focused as some people believed from the trailer helps in appreciating it.

And there isn't a "complete" lack of interesting sidemissions in ME3 with planets to land on. Sure, there was a lot less than in previous games(fuck all those probing missions that should have been us actually landing like in ME2 a least), but some of them like the ones with Samara and Grunt were pretty good.

By sidemissions I meant the completely random missions you could only find by scanning random planets.

I think I´m sidetracking this thread a bit.

DLC seems fine ;)

I really liked how gritty and detailed the environments were on this DLC, much of ME3 felt a bit too clean to me (like Palaven for example) and lacked 'war grit' where appropriate.

Finished watching it on YouTube. Surprised at the significance of the plot of this DLC with respect to the Reapers. Does this mean that
the star child is the manifestation of the "intelligence" the Leviathans created?

I'm going to go ahead and use my first ever post to say that I really appreciated the way they re-used FemSheps creep pose animation from the Traynor shower sequence for Ann when she was freaking out over the death of her father. Very classy.

Good use of first post!

Developpers reusing animations in cutscenes? Never heard of it!

it's not an excuse though.

I'm glad that I don't support this company anymore.

Surely reusing animations is not a reason for not supporting a company right? I mean, might as well stop supporting Eidos because they reused a lot of animations for Deux Ex HR at this point.

I know there is more to your "Bioware hate" than just that, but it feels like a silly reason.

I believe he was joking. But I can't tell anymore in this thread.

no, when there are stock animations for dialogues, it's ok. But cutscenes should be unique. This attitude - let's reuse this, cut that (and so on) is the reason why the last two games of Bioware feel shallow and soulless.

You do know that almost all "cutscenes" in Mass Effect have dialogues put into them right?

Anyway, they've been reusing animations since the first Mass Effect game, hell maybe even older games than that but i haven't played their other games.

My favorite animation is walking when you barely press the stick. You start walking, but very slowly, like you are some kind of street dancer.

as I understood this was supposed to be a unique animation, not "Shepard is pissed".

I'm all for re-using resources but it definitely took me out of that scene in a big way. Ultimately I liked the DLC well enough, even though it really demystifies the Reapers even more than the Extended Cut, and it seemed to take the most obvious route in their explanation.

I do think its odd that they chose to tell the story of the Leviathan but then they were like, "Oh not that Leviathan of Dis that everyone talks about, its this other Leviathan." Mech descent into the abyss was nice.

There's a lot of animation re-use everywhere in BW games, I've even spotted some ME animations in DA and vice-versa, but then again, most WRPG developers are really weak in this field BW, Bethesda, even Eidos with DX as mentioned above.

I find it extremely funny they invest a lot of money in graphic fidelity, realistic lighting and models etc... and then animations are not fluid at all and rehashed over and over.

Mass Effect as a cinematic experience would be massively improved if they used the Avatar/Naughty Dog technique of performance capture. Their hand animation looks like garbage nine times out of ten.

And that's what makes the reused animations so bad, they don't even look good to begin with. Also, fuck the eyelids clipping.

Well, assuming that ME4 will be a next-gen game... they're going to use a new engine where they will finally have to use new and better animations. That's one area(along with writing) where Bioware needs a lot of improvements. At least their graphic artists are still great, and the Leviathan DLC proved that, so i can't wait to see what kind of beautiful worlds(Ilium next-gen please) we'll see during the next-gen.

Finished this earlier, quite enjoyed it, didnt feel quite out of place like some DLC's where none of the team speak or react to anything. Worth every BW point. Did think however that
the reason the space child said he "didnt have time" to answer the origin of the Reapers was purely for this DLC :P
Other than that, il take more DLC up to this quality :)

Using a new engine doesn't necessarily mean they will start using better performance capture tools. They could have done it with UE3, they have no excuse other than that they don't want to put funding into it and will continue to crank out poorly animated games with the hopes that people won't notice it.

Seems like people are having generally positive opinions about this DLC, and having party banter is a huge plus for me, I had decided to wait and see but I might cave in.

I think that part of the reason why they dont bother is that they do not have enough time between each Mass Effect games and that they focus their efforts elsewhere during that short time, which is why we're still stuck with 2007/ME1 quality animations.

I'm just hoping that they will take their time with ME4... the biggest reason why ME3 had disappointing stuff was because they rushed it instead of saying "We'll release it when it's ready." If they went with the latter, the game would have been much better.

All because of EA like they say huh?

Naughty Dog has tons of capture performance done with a 2 year turn around.

I have just gotten really tired of their stories being cheapened by random low budget aspects of their game design.

Yeah, but i figured Mass Effect games are probably a little more complex to build, what with the whole "something happened in a previous mission or game due to player choices, so we have to change that little thing here and here".

I never played an Uncharted game, but i suppose they do not have to worry about such things and can concentrate on something else, like capture performance.

Your FOV makes me want to gag.

I use a manual FOV changer. Using the max distance FOV for combat is a bit much, I know. The rest are a mix of a bunch of FOVs though. ioware pulling in the camera so close for everything in ME3 really pissed me off.

During my play through last night, I noticed a squad mate do something I don't think I've seen before: interact with the environment outside of combat areas or cutscenes. upon entering one of the lab rooms on the TGES mining facility, one of your squad mates will pick up a data pad and read something from it. I don't know why that scripted movement caught my eye. It got me thinking of how infrequently that happens in these games.

I really enjoyed the DLC. It felt like the writing improved, I loved the extra squad banter, and acknowledgements of other developments(eg. romance). They followed the Lair of the Shadow Broker outline and put it to good use!

Liara spoiler
Liara comments that she wants to be the only tentacle monster inside Shepard's head
. Best joke ever.

I can't seem to trigger this. The option for Dr. Bryson's lab doesn't appear when I dock or check the Citadel's elevator options.

You need to check your mailbox in the Normandy first.

Okay thanks.

Edit: don't seem to have a new mail in my mailbox either. Checking it didn't give me the extra option.

Edit 2: checked again and now it did trigger...weird.

Are you sure its completely downloaded? I had to check the mailbox, read the mail, then a new quest was added in my journal. After that i had to reach the Citadel and i got 2 options : to land in the "vanilla" Citadel or go to the lab.

That, and the talk between romancing Tali and Garrus, and Javik telling Shepard
to go look somewhere else if she's trying to find a mate to romance with
, put a smile to my face.
