Steam Greenlight: 1000 games and counting, more Greenlit every few weeks

But the first sentence boggles my mind. You really don't see any distinction in games between "something I'll buy" and "something I won't"?

There are no games in genres you have no interest in, but that look good? Mexican isn't my favourite kind of food, but I've certainly had better mexican food and worse mexican food. I'm a beer drinker rather than a wine drinker, but I've had wines that are tastier than others. I don't listen to much country, but there's country that hurts my ears less than other country. I prefer non-fiction, but there's plenty of fiction I love. I don't play MOBA games, but I know that DOTA2 has been well received and Awesomenauts as well. I don't play fighting games, but I know that SF3:3S is a better fighting game than Ballz 3D. I don't find Friends or Scrubs or Big Bang Theory funny, but there are definitely people who I know whose senses of humour definitely jive better with those shows than mine.

To me, the sign of... I dunno, having good self-awareness? Having robust taste? Being a developed, thinking, three dimensional adult? Is being able to have nuance in you you interact with things, nuance between "it's awesome" and "it's shit", being able to offer input and comparisons of stuff even if it doesn't interest you.

So to me, I can find tons of stuff on the site that I'd upvote but never buy. *shrugs*
 
I'm amazed at the content that has been put up so far. Granted, lots of shitty looking, unfinished copycats but there are some gems in there after what, not even 2 days? Depending on how this develops, we really might need a monthly Greenlight round-up.

Also, Path to the Sky looks great, WIP but I'm a sucker for good looking retro graphics.
 
I've upvoted close to 40 games and I'd have to say that Routine is the one I'm most looking forward to.
 
Yeah it is not like Kickstarter where you pledge or you don't pledge, this is a completely free, no-strings attached move of goodwill towards a developer.

If they look like they are putting their heart into it and have some talent, they deserve an upvote.

Eventually (maybe already?) the main way to get votes seems like it will have to be similar to Kickstarter though - no one really goes to Kickstarter and browses through the games there (unless you are some sort of bedroom angel investor), you find out through word of mouth, through GAF posts, click a link and find yourself donating before you can think twice.

Greenlight there are way more pretty darn good looking games than games on Kickstarter, so the community really needs to rally around them to make it successful. The collections/lists are probably a decent way to do it, I can't think of a fair way to add more filtering options without those filtering options to be abused or bias what sorts of content gets submitted.
 
I dont usually like tower defense games, but this one seems pretty amazing and varied.

Is there some kind of ordering going on now? Because the stuff on the first page look a lot more polished and popular than the stuff on the last page.

For me "List of games to rate" changed to "Customized list of games to rate" so I presume they added some sorting behind the scenes.

I meant in the "All Games" list, it seems like it's changed from totally random, to the quality stuff being listed earlier, and the trash getting bumped to the back.

The whole thing looks a look more pleasant (and Russian-free) than it did yesterday morning when I checked.
 
Probably just repeating what has already been said by others. But, Greenlight seriously needs strict moderation. Valve cannot simply throw this service out there and expect the users to able to remove illegitimate content. I've reported close to 10 'games' now from users who simply believe Greenlight is some kind of wishlist.
 
Are all of Layernet's games shovelware garbage or is there some actual competence there? They look at somewhat polished but it's suspicious that they've submitted so much in so many unrelated genres.

It'd be nice to get all those games out of the "to rate" list...

I downvote anything that looks like a shitty ios/android port except the good ones (which are few and far between).

I also downvote MINING SIMULATOR 2012 and garbage shovelware like that.

I also downvote anything with exceptionally bad graphics, no matter how good the game actually might be. I don't mind good, old graphics, just amateurish ones like this shit.

I also like downvotes because especially on places like Nexus for mods or deviantart, creators of things get all butthurt when people actively do not like something.

Sometimes a thing someone made is bad and they should know it's bad, and a lack of votes up on a thing isn't good enough.

There are now 672 games, and while I have given my opinion on 556 of them, the section where I should find games to evaluate is empty. Does it happen with anyone else too?

Ugh, they need to implement a system where you can sort the shit from actual submissions, like verified indiestudios and publishers. This is madness, point of entry is way too low.

I hoped that this would be a way to get more unknown games, like you find on Gamersgate, on Steam. As of now it doesn't seem like it would be possible.
 
Damn, I haven't checked out Greenlight since the first day and I go now just to glance over and see no less than 3 "games" centered around killing jews and having random porn and gore pictures as screenshots.

Christ almightly do I hate modern mankind sometimes.
 
Maybe I'm just an asshole but I'm downvoting 3-4 times at least as many games as upvoting.

Are these people trying to turn steam into the app store?

Neither.

Valve already said that they'd spend the first few weeks trying to figure out the amount of votes needed to reach 100%. It's high on purpose.

I will say that it's quite nice to not have a bunch of comments on my Greenlight page be "Hey man I just uprated your game now do mine: *link*"

I won't get enough votes to be on Steam but all the nice comments and feedback is a real morale booster for sure. This is pretty awesome. :D

The folks at that studio are former Treyarch. I remember when it came out on Wii, one of the devs was pretty active on CAG, and the game itself seemed to be received well despite being a budget title, with the major complaint being the graphics. Looks like they changed the characters to a more cel-shaded style to help address that complaint. It's worth upvoting, if only for the relative lack of firefighting games these days, even though it's an interesting subject for games.

I won't tell people otherwise and apologies if it seems that way, vote for what you want of course and Up vote or down vote (appreciate Stumpokapow said this to me also)
The fact that you are doing this shows that the service has your attention and is working. It doesn't just end there though, come in here and tell us what you voted, start threads and spread the word, that will do FAR more in the long run than a thumbs up (or down) on greenlight, follow it through.
I started a Community Workshop to spot and recommend adventure games, after I launched I got 17 comments, ok some were all asking why I used part of a Grim Fandango picture BUT I hope these people also looked at the recommendations, read a few and made a choice.
Was pleased to see some of the devs actually thank me too for adding their games and I will spread the word about them as best I can.
I'm 70+/30- about the service but it's still early days and Valve always come good in the end, right?!
