Whatcha Been Playin': Back to School Edition

I think I win this week. I'm playing this for the first time (thx ResidualVM):

Grim Fandango

Grim_Fandango_artwork.jpg

And I finished Darksiders 2 in PC. I LOVE this game, I enjoyed every minute, the art direction in this game is.....no words.....

Just 100%'d Sleeping Dogs last night. Sped through the game pretty fast and loved every moment of it.

Now I'm going back into playing P4A until TTT2 and Borderlands 2 come out. Mostly completing arcade/story/challenge modes in between matches.

Also playing GGXX Accent Core on the side to try and learn Slayer. Having some difficulty getting his links down consistently

I haven't done a lot of gaming lately. My Steam rating is embarrassing. But I think that might change this weekend since I have episode 3 of The Walking Dead and a recently purchased copy of Dark Souls PC to play. Pretty excited, to be honest. I hope I can just relax and enjoy those lovely games over the weekend.

On the side, I'm playing some Super Mole Escape, Galaxy on Fire 2 and Jurassic Park Builder. JPB is my goto time management game now that I'm burnt out on Happy Street and Puzzlecraft. It's pretty damn good, it's F2P but I haven't felt the need to spend any real money on boosters yet.

Started replaying this right after finishing DA:O + DLC. I did install a few mods to ease my sanity. Being able to equip my party is way better than DAII's original system. Too bad I can't fix the game's core problems, namely the reused areas and shitty third act. I still like the game, but I'm seeing its issues way more clearly.

I'm going back and collecting all the Star Coins. I don't why I never bothered to do it before. I've only got World 8 left, and then I'll run through World 9.

I also installed the Another Super Mario Bros. Wii mod. Once I finish up the NSMBWii, I'm going to give it a go. It looks like a competent mod based on the videos. It could pass as the base game's sequel to someone who didn't know better.

Darksiders2.jpg

Really digging this so far. Playing on the 360 and some of the bugs are annoying though.

I have put so many hours into this.....

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition- NG+ my sorcerer and now working on a fun build of just 2 hander no shield with all strength and endurance

With September arriving, soon the sun will go away but that's not a problem, because after a day of work it's going to feel good to play my Backlog on Winter.

Meanwhile I just finished Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light. The game felt short but I liked the music.

Right now I'm cleaning Porsche Events on Forza 4. I have done all the races so Porsche Events are the last ones. Just in time for Horizon, I guess?

Next week I'm planning to do some Borderlands (the first one) with some Modern Warfare 3 here and there on PS3.

This is one of my favorite threads on GAF. Of course I feel guilty every time I post in it because I don't actually seem to get anything done (unlike some of the other people in this thread).

Been busy this week but my playing time has been spent with:

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
- Again. Finally completed the Series modes in Expert (got mostly S and A) and tried to get started on Ultimate mode in Challenge (boy is it ever tough). This might be my personal GOTY (unless I'm able to sink into Sleeping Dogs & Darksiders II and the rest of the year stuff). So addictive.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 - At World 3, got most of the Star Medals from Worlds 1 & 2.

Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition - Figure why not and got this. I've played and beaten this on PS3, so it's old habit at this point.

Demon's Souls - Masterclass in gaming. Playing this again and beat the bosses of 5-1 & 2-3.

Will try to finish up Darksiders this weekend (at the Black Throne section) and hopefully getting started on Sleeping Dogs (although I really want to get the rest of the stars in Super Mario Galaxy).

megamanlegends2.jpg

Started it for the first time a few days ago. I'm only up to the first boss but the game is incredibly charming so far. The graphics and VA have also aged really well.

The Last Story: Finished it. it was decent but I was kinda disappointed that the combat never really got challenging until the final boss fights and the story was completely predictable the whole way through but the characters(minus Zael and Calista) really saved the game for me.
Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden: Up to stage 7. It's a little overwhelming now that the game has dumped about 12 extra units into my party. Managing upgrades for my other units was hard enough already. @_@
Super Robot Wars J: Just got to the Gundam Seed story arc in Calvina's campaign.
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3: Doing a co-op playthrough with a friend of mine.

Sleeping Dogs (360) - working to beat it and 100% it. More than half-way there, awesome game with a few issues.

World of WarCraft patch 5.0.4 (PC): I'm relearning my class, basically, and fiddeling with my action bars non-stop. I look forward to spending some serious time in Azeroth agian!

Darksiders 2 (360): I'm stuck in an early part of the game and will need to look up a walkthrough to advance.

Syndicate (360): such a great game!

LotR: War in the North (360): Fun but getting repetitive at this point.

Asura's Wrath (360): I'll get another chapter or two in on this game. I love the game, but I need to play it in small doses.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Xbox Originals via Xbox 360) - I've not done a great deal of gaming this week. This was the only game I invested a lot of time into this week as part of the GAF Plays thread. First time I've actually finished it too. Good fun.

orange-box_480x360.jpg

The Orange Box (PS3) - Yes, I know. The PS3 version is the worst of the three releases and that I already have it on 360 and PC. But I love this pack to death that I own it on the Triple too. I've only played Team Fortress 2 on it so far in returning to it, but it's perfect because the only map I play on TF2 anyways is 2fort and it seems to be the only thing going on in TF2 PS3 right now.

heroes_of_ruin_box.jpg

Booorrrriinnngg, but it will tide me over until the real lootwhoring begins with Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2.

Ys-Origin-Review-Header.jpeg

Also really boring, and a huge disappointment.

The above games I am playing solely because I need to find games to play to fill in some of my free time until Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 steals it all.

I also recently 100%'d New Super Mario Bros. 2 and really enjoyed it. I might start Sly Cooper 3 in a few days.

1-300x270.jpg

The third game in the Golden Sun trilogy has had my attention for a sold 2 days now. It was slow to start but extremely hard to put down once I got back into the rhythm of things.
Not as good as the first 2 but yet I feel like I need a fourth game regardless just so the series lives on.

Dark Souls: The PC release got me to get back at the PS3 version. I put it down around Tomb of the Giants when school got heavy duty. Everyone's basically right about the drop in quality in the late game areas (the room full of Bounding Demons is especially egregious), but there's still lots of cool stuff. Still one of the better games.

10000000: The best thing done with 'match 3' since Dungeon Raid. It induces a level of addiction similar to a Kairosoft game, but it has the good sense to be done once you hit the title score, which doesn't take too long. Upon winning, you're told, "You are free." Indeed.

The Basement Collection: Just dipped my toes in. Time Fcuk is worth the price of admission.

They Bleed Pixels: Everything about this is rock solid. It's one button combat with a really varied moveset and combo system which feels really nice. Varied and at times cruel level design. The 'place your own checkpoint' mechanic is neat, but it isn't really as open as you might think. When the game sets up a gauntlet, it wants you to run that gauntlet. The similarities to Super Meat Boy are really superficial. I'd say it's closer to something like Outland, but not really.

Fallout: New Vegas: I just finished this about an hour ago. I got to the point where I felt I had done most of what I wanted to with the sidequests and exploring even though there is just so much to do in the game. Where the hell were these games when I was 12? Anyways, the end was pretty epic and the actual end made me feel a little upset but I also thought it was awesome at the same time. Other than the 15 or so times the game actually froze up on me, I really enjoyed this. I wish I had played this before Skyrim as I probably would have put alot more time into this but I'm feeling a little burnt out on open world games right now.

Tomorrow I plan to start this:

Heavyrain.jpg

Heavy Rain: I've been excited to play it for years and was just waiting for it to get to that perfect price point of $20.00. Well, that didn't happen so with the free blockbuster rental for six months, I put this on my list and a week and a half later here it is. Looking forward to the experience.

Finished Shadows of the Damned (PS3) last night, great game!

Playing:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360) - Just started this, it's my first Deus Ex game but I'm very impressed so far. Looking forward to getting further in.

Battlefield 3 (360) - Rush & Conquest, pumped for Armored Kill!

Skyrim (360) - About 48 hours clocked, still doing College of Winterhold quests.

Max Payne 3 (360) - Passed the Favela level, this game is outstanding.

Assassins Creed: Brotherhood (360) - 20% Complete

Trine 2 - Co-op with a friend and having a lot of fun, also the game looks absolutely gorgeous.
Dust: An Elysian Tail - 16hrs in at ~70% complete...Noogy made an amazing game that looks beautiful, plays great and the story and characters are really interesting - do yourselves a favor and get this game people, definitely one of the best games on the already freakin' impressive XBLA.
Dark Souls - 195hrs in and I only have one area to clear before going to the final boss, also planning to
join some covenants
that I haven't on my first playthrough and see what they are about before finishing my NG+ and continue on to NG++...I love this game so much.

Next game I'm starting is either Sleeping Dogs or Transformers: FoC.

EPmIE.jpg

Kid Icarus Uprising: To be frank, this is the best game Nintendo has done in years. The amount of spectacle, style and substance crammed into one tiny little package is something you don't really see from them nowadays, but Sakurai brought the goods. The level of challenge is great, as is their carrot-on-a-stick, almost taunting approach to replaying and trying the higher difficulties, and I'm glad the controls do eventually click and keep you feeling guilty for your own mistakes. The characters keep you going, regardless- a game hasn't been this corny since Sam and Max, but it's often hilarious, and the lines are delivered with a spot-on tone for what the game is- simultaneously being silly and keeping a rock-hard grip onto its slight edge. The story even has the balls to take some neat twists as you go on.

Also, loot. Diablo III may be too much for me but this game has me mixing it up constantly, in search of a killer set-up. My five-star Fairy Orbitars are currently killing it for me. Cracking game.

El Shaddai (360): A lot of thought has been put in the narrative, I like that. Some levels are so gorgeous. I'd say it's it my top 5 current-gen best visuals, along with Alice:MR's chapter 4, FF:4HOL, Dark Souls and Muramasa.

Ikaruga (360): Working on my XBLA backlog. Playing it for the first time. Ikaruga belongs in a game design museum!

I've been all over the place these past few days. Jumping between a number of games right now:

To The Moon (PC) -- Clunky interface, but story and music are really damn good so far (1 hour in).
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (3DS) -- Slowing down a bit with this one... it's fun, though. Ultimate difficulty is where it's at. First time I've ever used screen protectors on a handheld! About to call this one done for now. It'll be something I can come back to whenever.
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 (DS) -- Amazing game. Still working through the Hard stages, and we'll see how I do with Insane. Probably the best soundtrack out of the series.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge (DSiWare) -- Finished the first dungeon. *Really* impressed with this so far. Feels like a euro-sidescroller with Metroidvania/Zelda flavor and influence. Great animation, and I'm digging the soundtrack.
Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword (3DS eShop) -- At the second castle... this game is a lot more challenging than I thought it'd be, which is good. I was expecting something rather simple, but this game takes some really good timing and concentration. Music is very good.

I'm Alive, love the atmosphere and the setting. But the game is very scripted can piss me off sometimes. I thought you would have more freedom in terms of combat and exploration. Picked it up over Silent Hill Downpour, no regrets this game is way more tense.

Played straight through episode 3. This was the best episode by far. So many tough choices, the action was perfect. Bring on episode 4.

260px-Sleeping_Dogs_-_Square_Enix_video_game_cover.jpg

Jumped back into sleeping dogs. The game is getting better and better the further I go on. I'm taking my time with it, and enjoying every minute of it. Probably would have been finished it if not for my work schedule.

ratchet and clank HD...still in game 1, which is the first I've ever played it...I've played all the others and loved them all, but the original is obviously not as good as any of the others by far, so I'm like laboriously going through as fast as I can...I'll go back for trophies later.

dark souls, working on another starting character, just because.

stacraft 2 as always with my team

Fallout_New_Vegas.jpg

Been playing this. On my 78th hour according to steam. I feel like I am near finished with it though, getting a little burnt out on open world games.

Magic: The Gathering - Planeswalkers 2013 on the iPad. This game is perfect for tablets, but some of the interface decisions are annoying. It's fun, though. I'm about halfway through the campaign and I still haven't found a deck as good as that green/blue one for the 2012 version (the one filled with huge critters, Ancient Depths was the name I think). I loved that deck. So far I've been a fan of the blue deck focused on depleting the opponents library.

Guild Wars 2 - Currently playing a Level 17 Thief named Lafiel Von Abriel on Stormbluff Isle. Enjoying the hell out of the game. Best part is considering I'm trying to limit my gaming time atm, it's very easy to pick up and play in short bursts, plus I have no pressure to play it constantly because of the lack of monthly fee.:o

Still need to get back into Fallout NV and System Shock 2 later on though.

Dark Souls: Durante Edition - I have been switching between a Pyromancer, Thief, and Deprived at the Capra Demon on all three, fuck that guy!

so good and omg real combat!

Kid-Icarus-Uprising_N3DS_US_ESRBboxart_160h.jpg

it's great but it makes my left hand hurt. I need to buy a grip or something for my old 3ds.

Final Fantasy XIII-2
And I'm having a blast. For me one of the better RPGs I played. Currently on chapter 5, after ~20 hours and I heard it is already the final chapter? Actually, I'm fine with this, as it also has more sidequests for that.
Definitely going for non-DLC 100% there.

Wario Land
Playing for the first time, currently at Course 4. I like it that there are at least some secret stuff there. I only had WL4 before and I thought that it was great, with tons of secrets. WL1 now doesn't have the impressive moveset and surely doesn't have such a huge amount of secrets, but it's still fun.

http://raptr.com/VALIS/wall

The Pinball Arcade, mostly 360 but a little iPad (it doesn't run as well on iPad, and that's critical for a pinball sim). Over and over and over. Gorgar in particular. Raptr has me with 21 hours this week. Seems about right.

Just started up the Death Rally remake on PC. It's more impressive for an iPad game and fits better there, for the PC it's kind of dull. I'll probably play this for an hour and forget it.

I finished Mirror's Edge yesterday on Normal/no guns, and loved the game enough to immediately start a Hard run today. Being able to use guns helped smooth out the more annoying combat sections, and knowing the paths made the running so much more fun to go through, trying new things as I went along. Hard mode really made the game shine for me. It wasn't too long, feeling a lot like Vanquish in being awesome but not overstaying it's welcome. Such a damn shame there hasn't/probably wont be a sequel.

I also played the first two episodes of The Walking Dead from Telltale (thanks PS+). I had tried the demo before, but man the full thing is much better. From all accounts Part 3 is fantastic as well, so I can't wait to buy the full thing once it is all out. Telltale really nailed it there.

That was such an awesome experience. I need to pick up mirror's edge again I didn't even finish the dlc.

FWIW, EA has recently mentioned Mirror's Edge as a franchise too good to kill off. Apparently they want to create a sequel eventually. My guess is they'll just make it more action-based.

Just finished Lego Batman 2, this game surprised me with it's fun factor. Though it did start to wane as I got further.

Currently playing Minecraft, this one is a staple in my library, and come back to it constantly.

Xenoblade, first rpg in years to keep my attention. Really loving this title, and the music is phenomenal, an that's coming from a person who almost never notices game music.

If there's not a no guns option I'll be upset. That's the achievement I'm most proud of!
