Whatcha Been Playin': Back to School Edition

I finished Mirror's Edge yesterday on Normal/no guns, and loved the game enough to immediately start a Hard run today. Being able to use guns helped smooth out the more annoying combat sections, and knowing the paths made the running so much more fun to go through, trying new things as I went along. Hard mode really made the game shine for me. It wasn't too long, feeling a lot like Vanquish in being awesome but not overstaying it's welcome. Such a damn shame there hasn't/probably wont be a sequel.

This is the only achievement that I didn't get that actually hurts. I played the whole game without any guns and at points it was infuriating. I spent hours on certain combat sections but I really wanted to do it without guns. I got to pretty much the last board
the one with the computers and mainframes all in one big room
, and had the hardest time in this one room but on the 40th attempt or so I was trying to disarm a guard and accidentally pulled the wrong trigger which fired a bullet. I failed the attempt and continued on and got through it without guns but when the game finished I never got the achievment. I'm not even an achievment whore but this one really hurt.

I finished Sleeping Dogs, so soon I will be playing the Yakuzas, all of them.

Working through my Steam backlog six games at a time.

Heroes of Might & Magic VI
Civilization IV Complete (again)
Dragon Age: Origins: UE (about to give up on it, just can't get into it :-/)
Payday: The Heist
Rayman: Origins
Darksiders

Feel like it is both the best and worst way to work through a backlog. Best because I can play whatever genre I'm in the mood for, worst because I feel like I will never finish any of them!

Transformers Fall Of Cybertron - Upset I paid full price for it. Other then that It's a good (very short) game.

Final Fantasy VIII - Best PS1 FF and I just had to play it on the beauty that is the Vita.

Finished Vanquish.

Did a bunch of stuff in Lollipop Chainsaw. I need 3 more costumes and I'm done. Technically I'm missing two achievements but I have no intention of getting them.

FWIW, EA has recently mentioned Mirror's Edge as a franchise too good to kill off. Apparently they want to create a sequel eventually. My guess is they'll just make it more action-based.

Yeah I've seen them mention it every so often. At this point I imagine it would be an early next-gen game if it releases. If it does happen I'd hope they keep it faithful to the first game, but who knows.

Oh yeah, I was nervous about it the entire time, particularly in busier combat parts. I tended to mash 'drop weapon' after the disarm just to be sure. After finishing that using guns in Hard felt almost wrong (though guns made it much easier at times than normal).

Taking a little break from big console stuff this week, tbh. Been going out for most of my days, so portable stuff or playing things in short bursts was the way to go this week.

Nayuta no Kiseki (PSP)

Let me start off by saying that this is perhaps one of the prettiest PSP games I have ever played. The models are good, the environment detail is pretty, and everything seems to look so fluid. I'm kinda sticking to my guns and saying that the base mechanics feel similar to Oath/Origin. There's a double jump, and more platforming than I had expected. You can chain attacks to obtain some bonuses like Int+, etc. Nayuta is stage-based, and you have to progress through them in order to unlock another one (rather than being given to you from the start, but you need items to progress, etc). Stages change depending on the season so it affects what routes you take and what enemies are there. It also affects your quests in an Oracle of Seasons sorta way sometimes. Also, Hard mode... doesn't feel that hard at the moment, lol. The bosses do get better as the game goes on, though, that's a plus.

Final Fantasy IV (SNES)

Still continuing my playthrough with Sailor Batman and his gang of loony mages.

Sonic Before the Sequel

I saw the 2012 version up during SAGE 2012, and I figured why not. It's a very good fangame! The meaning behind 'Sonic Before the Sequel' means that the game is supposed to take place between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. Fangames usually differ in terms of they feel, especially in terms of what Sonic fans like to scream out every now and then: physics. While not perfect (some floatiness), SBtS's physics feel pretty good. Most of the level design revolves around trying to make Sonic move faster and it doesn't seem to like throwing obstructions in front of you to stop you from going quick in earlier stages. In later stages, of course, they get a little tricker. You also move between playing Sonic and Tails despite them having not met yet. Tails's levels have less running sections and more platforming, but that's because he flies. There's also a Yoshi's Island 'touch fuzzy get dizzy' type of thing in Tails's levels.

By the way, the 2012 version has some good music (ex: Sunset Star Act 3; Metro Madness Act 1, Fortress Flow Boss, Lost Levels Act 1. I sometimes feel like the art is a little cluttered in the levels, but otherwise, it plays well. It is longer than you think it is, though.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)

We all have our favourite games that we just love to speedrun. Well, this is one of mine. Ever since I was little, I've always loved trying to speedrun Sonic 2. Outside of Metropolis Zone, which they ended up taking some hints from for Mad Gear Zone in Sonic 4, I still love blasting through all of the zones, especially in Super Saiyan mode.

Yeah, I was usually hitting the drop weapon too. I just hit the wrong button once. Oh well. I'd still love to play another one and I'd actually prefer it if they took guns out the game altogether. If they want to use weapons, make it melee based.
