the camera takes a steaming hot shit on the 3gs camera, the retina display is a huge ass deal, the form factor is like night and day, the phone in general is just smoother/faster at loading apps and whatnot.

Dude, it's a big fucking difference. And that's 3GS to 4S. To 5 will be even bigger.

Um...the screen alone is a mindblowing improvement. That's not even mentioning the speed and graphics boost, 8MP camera with flash and HD video recording, FaceTime, much improved battery life, gyroscope, and so on.

Have I just been Copernicus'd?

why, microsoft seems to have an even stricter app/software process, if anything they should be doing an even better job with ensuring software runs across its platform. Especially with all their cross platform stuff.

In brief, there are WP7 devices from as early as this spring that won't be getting the WP8 update. That's a software lockout on a much worse level than anything in iOS or Android.

I should revise that quote to say this spring. The Lumia 900 (released on AT&T in March) won't be getting the WP8 update, and it's fucking shameful.

This is significant because (to answer your question) WP8 uses an entirely different kernel and developer process, ensuring older devices won't get any new software at all really. It's even worse than a new OS iteration that at least gradually abandons the older devices.

I dsiagree because at least it doesn't make older version of the software obsolete for users of older phones. Again, I bought brushes when it worked on my phone, it doesn't work now, along with a tonne of new software that also doesn't work on my phone. Windows phone 7 users dont get access to the new apps, which is the exact same as people with older iphones, but at least their older apps will still work.

I think old phones doing poorly is more related to Apple wanting it that way. If they wanted, they could optimize the iOS for old hardware. Still, most people having performance issues on old phones, should do a restore without putting a back-up. Restore and start clean.

Your 3G could download the latest apps from the iOS store 1-year after release. I'm sure it was supported very well in 2009 and 2010 as well, 2-3 years after release. Even today, the most popular apps like Angry Birds, Where's My Water/Perry, Temple Run, etc. still come out for the 3G.

The Lumia 900 won't be able to download the latest Windows Phone apps 9 months after release.

By all accounts, iOS 6 runs faster than iOS 5 on the 3GS. iOS 6 is like a Snow Leopard/Mountain Lion update.

You obviously have not ever touched a 3GS, or at least not in a long time. My phone is a piece of shit in comparison to my sister's 4 and my friend's 4S. The only reason I didn't get a 4S myself was because I'm trying to hold out for the 5 (and seemed to have done so successfully). The upgraded screen alone is a magnificent improvement. And the 4S camera in comparison to my 3GS's...damn.

This new phone needs to come out now. :(

Nope. That's not true.

The increase in speed is a HUGE improvement.

You also have features in iOS 5 (and iOS 6)
that aren't on the 3GS due to it being an older phone.

That's interesting. I want to know how well is iOS6 running on iPhone 4, I'm planning to update from iPhone 2G to iPhone 4 (factory unlocked) when the new iPhone (5) is released.
 
Actually considering to dump my Verizon contract, get an iPad mini/iPod Touch as a replacement for my iPhone, and just using a cheap old cellphone with prepaid card for regular calls. So tired of being under contract.
 
I really like that Windows Phone is lightweight like iOS. I really hate that current phones aren't upgradeable to WP8. The Lumia 900 is really snappy for having hardware that's 2 years old. The same isn't true for Android phones.

Last year, didn't we get the note, Galaxy II, Galaxy II Sky Rocket, Galaxy Nexus plus Windows phones?

HTC Evo 4G LTE/One X, Evo Design, Evo 3D, etc.

Perhaps, they're not cranking them out once a quarter but they're probably releasing two major phones a fiscal year (ex Motorola Atrix and RAZR).

Also on a more serious note, I really would like to sell my 4s to grab a 5 but since I just moved(moving is expensive) I need to wait on that. Feels bad man.

I don't really think the beta versions are a good way to judge that, at least with regards to how well the final release copes on older hardware. My iPhone 4 feels much worse on iOS 5 than it ever did with the previous version, and I'm not sure there's anything in 6 that would be worth another speed reduction if they aren't going to bother optimizing it well.

For that matter, does apple prevent you from downloading updates that will cause an app to become incompatible with your device due to not upgrading?

I am.

At home I got Wifi, At work I got Wifi. Im covered 95% of the time.

I guess having a smartphone is more of a social status thing.

Not really.

Convenience. Instead of carrying around multiple products, a person can only carry one.

Before I had an iPhone, I had a 1st gen iPod Touch and a "dumbphone". Eventually got the 3GS a few months after it released and the convenience of carrying just one product was great for me. Currently have the 4S... It would be hard for me to go back to carrying multiple products.

Megapixels aren't all that important. I only have an iPad 3 to judge, but its camera is pretty great (same as 4S?). However they could still improve a lot upon the low light conditions.

Question:

Do you guys think there will be a 128 GB version or at least a price drop on the capacity sizes for the new iPhone?

64 GB version of the 4S is $400... I would definitely consider getting the new iPhone if the 64 GB version of it is $300 (or less).

Have a 32 GB 4S now. Could use the extra space since I'm running out and I don't like to delete apps/media.

Why more people don't do that? Most likely because people would rather carry an "all in one" device than carrying 2 to 3 devices from day to day?

It's not a social status thing at all, it's convenience. It also has the ability to provide much more support than a dumb phone in a time of need. Yeah 911 works everywhere, but with a smartphone you can be located much easier, look up emergency numbers, heck, you can even log an entire accident claim with photos on it.

It provides numerous uses that outweigh any "look at me! I have an expensive phone!" status statement.
