Apple's September 12 Event | It's almost here.

If I have a choice between Skype or Facetime, I always go Facetime.

In my anecdotal experience, it has always been better quality.

So where and how extensively is NFC used right now?

Essentially nowhere and never in the US. I don't think Apple will use it.

Contactless payment is getting quite common in the UK, seeing it in more and more places after the banks have been pushing it for a while. Apple will speed up its adoption, but if they leave it out of the 5 even though the hardware has been designed with it in mind they will be behind the curve a bit.

When I had my jailbroken 4S, my mom would Facetime me with her iPad rather than call me because she was always using her iPad. Facetime worked extremely well on AT&T's fake 4G. <3 Jailbreaking.

FaceTime is a killer app when grandparents or other family live more than a few minutes away. This is more obvious if you have children though.

We skyped maybe once a month with family before. We FaceTime once or twice a week now. Integration and ease of use is everything.

I love this fan mockup of the new Nano. It's exactly what I want.

All reports indicate that Apple is ditching the "iWatch" road, and I couldn't be happier. Even with Bluetooth it would be impractical, and serve 0.1% of the people using it. If the new one has the same screen size as the fifth gen Nano (or even a little bigger, since the scroll wheel is gone) it can still clip to clothing rather effortlessly.

All the Nano needs now to achieve perfection is Wi-Fi. No reason why it shouldn't be able to sync wirelessly. I couldn't care less about having apps like YouTube or Camera on it, though, but wouldn't complain either.

Is it?

Banks are giving out the contactless cards, I'll give you that, but there are very, very few retailers who are accepting contactless payments.

The best part of facetime is how awesome it is to use on the go when you're out and about.

soon coco soon, well except when your on AT&T, which just send me a text saying i'm over three gigs on my data. It's almost like they don't want me to use my phone to stream video and listen to podcasts on my UNLIMITED DATA.

So this will be the first time I have an iPhone and will be upgrading to a new one. I'm going to pre-order it but I'm curious as to how that works. I assume when I pre-order, I'll enter my phone number or something and it'll pull up my AT&T account so I can order it. Then when it comes in the mail, what do I do? Just swap out the SIM from my iPhone 4 into the new one?

That looks too awesome.

Which means we're probably not getting that :P I hope I'm wrong.

Stuff like Pay with Square is getting very popular in the US. It could go two ways, and Apple could definitely influence it.

I see it quite a bit, even McD's is now.

It needs a wider push, from other than the banks, but that's where Apple comes in. I think it would be quite foolish to cut the 5 out of the equation going forwards, as it's obviously in their plans even if it might not all be ready to go this week.

Bolded: Yup!

The phone should already come with a SIM card, so no need to swap.

What's the cheapest I can pay a month for an iphone (or smarthphone) on AT&T? About $75? I would like to text, so I have to pay extra for that too right? Bullshit. You have to pay for data, and a different kind of data.

I live in Canada where plans are already so goddamn BS, but $75 still sounds excess.

$40-50 base here.

Well, I was just looking at the SIII (which has NFC) and it seems it only works if you're on Orange in the UK. Which is bizarre.

I'm currently paying $85 a month after taxes and fees. I'm on the $40 individual plan with unlimited data ($30) and 200 text messages ($5).

I have a dumb phone and pay $40+$5 that comes to around $52 after taxes. That gets me 400 minutes (but because of roll overs like 1000+) and 200 texts. I don't use my phone much for talking anymore and some months are text light or heavy.

$40+$20-30 + Whatever for texting. That shit just sounds excessive to me. So far that is my excuse for keeping a dump phone.

$30 is for 3GB now. You must have been on that for awhile no? I think 3GB would be quite enough for me. Since I don't use mobile anything who knows how much I would actually need.

Question:

Do you guys think there will be a 128 GB version or at least a price drop on the capacity sizes for the new iPhone?

64 GB version of the 4S is $400... I would definitely consider getting the new iPhone if the 64 GB version of it is $300 (or less).

Have a 32 GB 4S now. Could use the extra space since I'm running out and I don't like to delete apps/media.

No, there won't be a 128gb. iCloud saw to that.

It needs all tying together in a way people get, it's often the way Apple things take off with them taking care (forcing if necessary) everyone else including companies to go in the right direction.

I get the impression that it's not quite at that stage yet, but the hardware (N41/N42) and the software (Passbook) has been designed with it in mind. From a feature point of view it would be better to have it and say you have it, then roll it out whenever. The more iPhones around that can support it the stronger your position.

If the N42 leaves the guts out completely, then it just devalues things such as Passbook and looks like yet another compromise to add to the list. A 5S with NFC next year? Well that will be even further behind the curve.

That's pretty nice, more or less the same as the quick mock I made a few pages back save home button.

$40 base for 450 minutes, but it's a smartphone so you need at least
$20 300MB of data, and if you want text you can only go unlimited (or like $0.25 per message)
$20 text

Total: $80 if that amount of data is enough.

Could you may, I dunno, at least dissapear for a bit when this event goes live? I get that you love trolling and all that, but maybe take a break for a while on Wednesday onwards so you don't continually shit up the thread? We already know your default opinion on whats gonna be shown, no matter what it is, and so do you. Noone is forcing you to care about Apple, or to spend a penny on any of their products. I don't go into threads about products I allegedly don't care about and continually bash those products. Why don't you just enjoy whatever it is that you use, and join discussions about things you like? Why the constant chronic, trolling? I don't think its too much to ask to ask you to disappear on the day of the event, and do everyone a favor while doing so. You already know you're planning to *yawn* and pretend to be massively dissapointed/unimpressed/whatever while mocking and disparaging everything that's shown like the troll that you are, so whats the point?

It's futile, really. Just ignore the trolls and hope that others don't quote them.

That's insane. I'm currently on Koodo in Canada, and this is what I get for $60:

6GB Data
300 daytime minutes
Unlimited incoming minutes
Unlimited evenings @ 5 + weekends
Unlimited international text/media messaging
Cross Canada local calling
Voice Mail+ Call display

Have you ever read my posts during any tech events. You might want to go back and look, you may be surprised.

Yeah, AT&T and Verizon here aren't very great with pricing. I'm paying $80 after taxes for Verizon after my work discount. I still have Unlimited LTE and text but their plans have recently changed. I'm off contract and strongly considering Walmart's prepaid here which is like $45. So hard to give up unlimited LTE though.

Uh, no, and I'm not gonna spend my time doing so. I'm basing my opinion on the posts in this thread, which is more than enough to come to a conclusion. We get it, you hate the iPhone/Apple, move on. Why be in this thread about a product you're constant disparaging? Don't you see how pathetic that is? You've shown to have no interest in real discussion/debate in this thread, and all your posts are constant sarcastic, snarky quips about the company with little substance behind them. Your post history isn't gonna change that fact.

If you're an American and don't do you part and buy Apple products, you're a traitor in my eyes.

No, the point is why would he post constantly in a thread about an APPLE EVENT if he doesn't care/doesn't buy Apple products? My point is leave the people that actually ARE interested alone, and stop the harassment. It's insanely trollish.

You need to take all this shit less personal. You're imagining things. I like technology, and I like joking around. I somehow manage to do that and multi task the ability to have discussions every now and then.

I'm a little surprised actually, because I'm not running iOS yet I can still multi task.

It's Sunday, theres nothing actually happening.

Relax.

Maybe on cellphone vs. cellphone, but on iOS devices vs. Android devices, I think Android outsold iOS in the last few months.
There are 3 iOS phones on sale. How many android phones are on sale? But yes, more android devices are sold.

Other than the higher resolution/extra row of icons, there's isnt anything mind blowing between a 3GS and a 4S.

I've had significant hands-on time with every flagship smartphone since the release of the iPhone, from every major company, and my mind has yet to be "blown" after the launch of the original iPhone. There's massive differences between the 3GS and the 4S, (as I'm sure you're aware) but please enlighten us and make a list of the 'mind blowing' things from other companies in the past few years, just so that we have an idea what your standards are. Because I've thought about it, and I can't think of anything from any company that fits that definition, excluding the original iPhone and iPad. The next iPhone can be a significant and worthwhile upgrade, without being "mindblowing" because that term can mean anything to anyone. To me, the closest things to "mindblowing" since then were the iPhone 4 display the 1st time I saw it, as well as the new iPad display, which is still damned impressive. Both of these were way ahead of their time with nothing else in the industry that compared, and this is still the case with the iPad, as well as the display of the new MBP, which again, is in a league of its own.

Whats the relevance to other companies? Stop being so butthurt over people not being blown back by apples iterations that are finely tuned existing technology.

LTE, WiFi direct integration, multi screen size support with a single package, mesh networking, samoled displays, WP 7.8, true black screens, NFC integration.

e: I'm gonna do you a solid, if a mod wants to ban me for the duration of September the 12th, please do it so that paradoxical doesn't have a nervous breakdown when he sees I've made a post in this thread.

Feel free to forward this to you nearest moddership representative for review.

I think he's right about the original iPhone, tho. Apple actually reinvented the phone.
All the other iPhone models are just upgrades and nothing else, you really can't expect a jump so incredible like the cellphone -> iPhone in 2007.

If we're talking about more than just hardware, then I have to say that WP7 blew me away when it was first unveiled.

At the time, a lot of popular apps on iOS just looked like complete ass, and the new WP7 UI gave them a new (better) life. Even basic stuff like browsing photos and contacts just looked so much nicer on WP7. Unfortunately, WP8 is undoing a lot of that understated elegance.

It was a (short-lived) quantum leap in UI design, as far as I'm concerned. And it still looks great in motion.
