Borderlands 2: Gaige the Mechromancer release date confirmed for Oct 16

So when will the skill trees be released? Really want to see what makes this a good character for first time players and/or co-op.

An entire player class locked as a pre-order bonus? Do not like.

Read this: http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=134551 -- the only non-digital retailers in the US are those 3 mentioned. I know there is a Gearbox rep who posts here so maybe he can clarify.. but if that is indeed the case, I will probably cancel my preorder as a way of voting with my wallet that I don't appreciate these tactics.

Edit: Here is the pic they tweeted earlier today that confirms that it is only if you preorder and only if you do it from participating retailers.

It's going to be sold, so it's not a case of "Preorder from these people or NEVER GET IT!!!"

If the first hadn't provided so much entertainment OR if this was the first, I'd join you. For me, Borderlands more than earned it's money and BL2 can have all of my money it wants.

She was revealed as concept art at PAX East and shown with no textures and barely anything on the skilltree a few weeks ago. This isn't a case of "They pulled her to make money," it's a case of "We had an idea, didn't have time to put it in the game and make our launch date, so we're giving her as a loyalty bonus."

There are times I think GAF would only be happy if developers sold their GOTY versions of the game for $40 at launch. Even then, some GAFfers would still whine about something. "FUCK, why did it take them four years to make this game?!?"

I honestly think you'd all bitch about the rope as the hangman puts the noose over your head.

Interesting that they are adding a whole new Class. I wonder if they have more in the pipeline? Personally I would love to have the old vault hunters playable with all the new gear. Or Borderlands 1 playable with new ones. :D

I think they said Mechromancer, the GameStop stuff, plus the Season Pass content is all they have planned. Once the fourth DLC pack for the season pass ships they're taking a break and will consider new content then.

Sounds good to me. I am sure they learned from Moxxi's, so the content with be way more interesting than just an arena, which seems to be why the Arena Dome thing is a bonus.

Still would love to play the Zombie DLC again. :D

She looks really awesome.

So adorable.

I think there's three Arenas in the game - a Creature Arena (Gamestop), a Bandit Arena, and a Robot Arena.

I fucking hate this DLC BS.

So you only get this if you preorder from certain retailers?

Do you just see imaginary words on your screen every time the letters D, L, and C are there? What the hell even made you think that? lol

I still feel the whole "This is real DLC! We started development later and she's not on the disc! (which is true)" is a bit stupid. They either must've known or or... Just release it for free or whatever.

Well if this is the case, then I'm out. Since I can't buy it for another three weeks either I pay 70 dollars for the game or feel like I'm getting cut short.

Pre-order, wait 3 weeks to pick up = Profit?

Not sure how long your local game shop will hold things for you though.

I think he's saying he can't afford to spend $60 for 3 weeks. They won't honor the "pre-order" unless you pay for it upfront or pay for it within X amount of time after release. It definitely isn't that long. Usually 2-3 days.

Unless you believe they are outrageously and blatantly lying about not getting to work on the character until after the game went to certification, you're not getting "cut short" on anything. The alternative that almost any other game and publisher would have done in this scenario is pushed it out another month and charged everyone for it. You people are fucking ridiculous sometimes.

It's pretty ridiculous that someone buying the game day 1 from Target and Walmart are getting a different game than someone buying from Amazon and Best Buy. And then Gamestop buyers are getting a different game than everyone else. It's pretty effin stupid and kinda shady. If you're going to reward people for buying the game new, reward everyone that buys it new.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the character is a bonus to everyone who buys the game new, pre-order or not.

BL2 has 4 main classes by design just like the first game. They created a DLC class as a bonus for people who choose to pre-order the game and anyone else can purchase for 10 bucks. Not sure what the issue is here.

Just the old mentality of anything that devs start working on before the release date needing to be on the disc and free.

It's for anyone who buys new....

I wonder how the robot appears on screen...hopefully its not just a phase in / phase out. Quick fall from the sky or something.

I see you in every borderlands thread spouting off baseless, entitled, snarky comments. What's your fucking agenda?

Take off the tinfoil hat. Baseless? Read the thread first before talking shit. Would have saved you some embarrassment.

That's what I thought too. Not according to this thread though. Gamestop buyers get something no other buyer will get. That's a proven fact. According to some people here the only people getting the mechromancer for free are people that pre-order from Amazon, Gamestop, and Best Buy. No one's confirmed or denied it yet, but Gearbox's own website seems to back it up. I hope it's wrong, because I love Gearbox and hope they haven't gone down this EA/Capcom-esque path.

Whoa, wait, I'm illiterate apparently. October 16th? I thought it was September so we could download it early and be ready for launch. Well that is disappointing.

The best way to find out is to send a PM to GBX_AdamF or to email GBX themselves if possible. From my past experiences with these types of deals they always packaged the codes in new, sealed copies of the game. I can't say for certain if GBX did the same thing however so I have kept mum on the issue.
You also don't deserve being put on blast for legitimate concerns. I hope everyone who buys new regardless of location gets to experience the new class next month.

Well, I expected that they would wait for a month for DLC character. It's perfect for hardcore people who already beat the game during first two weeks. It's smart move, imo.

In my opinion, everyone that buys it new day 1 should get the code to download it (or to join that premiere club, whatever it is). That's how other games have done it. I was watching one of the IGN videos and Randy seemed to indicate that people who buy the game new get the extra class for free when it releases. He didn't qualify that as only people who buy from 3 specific retailers and only if they're pre-order. Some people in this thread seem pretty sure that it's only pre-orders from those specific retailers.

As for being on blast, what that guy is whining about is that I had a problem with content being taken out of the game and given to Gamestop shoppers, but to no one else. I despise pre-order bonuses. It's not an attack on Borderlands. And it's consistent with how I view all games that utilize this business practice. If on top of that they're screwing over Target/Walmart etc shoppers then that's pretty bad. I'm leaning towards believing they're giving the Mechromancer to ALL people that buy it new.

I expected it around November/December. Randy said around 60-90 days after launch, but apparently they got it done a lot quicker than planned. No complaints here about that.

edit: nevermind, i'm an idiot. here's to hoping that sir hammerlock becomes a playable character down the road. i'd easily pay 10 bucks for each character they want to implement. good thing i'm getting gaige with my preorder.

I'm holding out hope for a Tiny Tina class. The voice actress for her is great.

AC/DC sold their last album exclusively at Wal-Mart in exchange for Wal-Mart buying 3 million copies. I imagine a similar deal was struck between Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy, thus ensuring they received certain content.

It sucks, but times are tough and if a developer can secure retail presence in exchange for exclusive content, then I say do it.

All of the content becomes available at a later date for a fee, so as a gamer all you lose is the ability to get it for free, but not really, because the participating retailers paid for it.

Why the free pass for such an obviously deceptive practice? Different preorder bonuses are for retailer number games, not any type of consumer benefit.

In a perfect world everyone who preordered would get all preorder bonuses - no asterisks, no tiny print, no bullshit.

HERE IS MY PROBLEM WITH THIS WHOLE THING:

It is NOT the fact that it is pre-order or pay later, it is the fact that THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME 10, count it, 10 F.R.I.G.G.I.N.G. DOLLARS FOR A SINGLE CHARACTER...

Really...ten bucks...around 15% of the initial cost of the ENTIRE GAME for a single character.

Its ludicrous and nobody should support a company that would do that.

YES its cool they give it away "for free" if you pre-order, but again, my arguement against this is soley based on those who can't afford to buy the game prior to release and the fact that a single damn character is 10 bucks. It just seems blatantly expensive to force you into pre-ordering if you want her.

HERE IS MY PROBLEM WITH THIS WHOLE THING:
Actually it is meant as a way to discourage sales of pre-owned games without resorting to the already loathed online passes. While some people can't afford the game at launch they will wait for either the used copy to come in or the GOTY edition/the price drop. This way Gearbox can make a little more cash without severely punishing a player who buys the pre-owned copy.

Seems like a good option to me. Better than an online pass at least. My only problem is the Mechromancer isn't packaged with new copies of the game but that is another issue entirely.

I agree that it's expensive, but this isn't just a skin. No horse armor. This is a new class in an ARPG, complete with distinct skilltrees and everything. Also, as far as I understand, every character has specific sidequests to flesh out their backstory or something, so I would imagine the character also comes with new quests? Maybe new loot as well. Might actually be a fair bit of content - more than it appears to be at a first glance at least.

That analogy doesn't work. No one could buy the ACDC cd anywhere else, therefore everyone that bought a copy was getting the same cd. With Borderlands you're getting a much lesser product if you don't shop at those 3 retailers.

If this is true, then that is awesome.

I was really hoping for some of that in the first game, but got nothing. Lilth was supposed to go to Pandora to find another Siren but that was never fleshed out. Unless I missed it along the way.

But why is it really necessary to have her?
The first game had plenty of replay value and the skill trees are more varied and complex in this one. The single player game is said to be ~58 hours for a single character playthrough, so having "just" 4 options, which is what they had in BL1 does not seem to be a major limitation.

Yeah, I'm all for DLC that "does stuff", as opposed to asking me to pay $5 to dress up Zer0 like Batman.

It's not methanphetamines. If you don't want to buy the new character DLC, then don't buy it. It's not like you're paying to win. Wait it out and pick it up next year when it all goes on sale on Steam or something, if money is really a problem.
