The iOS Gaming |Thread5| From Zero to Gaming Hero

This is what I understood playing the game.

You have a party of heroes...doing quests you level those up (slowly).
Often completing quests gives you what I call 'prisoners'...other heroes that fill up your ranks in a legion.
You can then strengthen your main heroes sacrificing your lower ranks.
Doing so you will level up your main Heroes (watch out that XP and gold requirements depends on the colors used with extra gain or XP loss depending on the cool always onscreen gem help, in the upper right corner during quests).
When a hero is max level, you can evolve him/her using the REQUIRED artifacts.
The game will select those automatically IF YOU HAVE THOSE, watch out that they are displayed but grayed out if do not have the required ones...this was confusing for me in the beginning, because they are indistinguishable.
You can get particular artifacts doing quests or events (they change during the week).
I still miss EXACTELY what the stars are for (some 3 stars level 2 heroes are better than 2 stars level 10 heroes).
The glowing checkers behind a particular hero means he is a rare one.
At higher levels heroes have spells that kick in after a fixed number of rounds, then you have to wait.
Diamonds are required to summon heroes (better than the ones you get playing) and guardians, which I assume are even better, but I'm not sure.
Before each quest you can select an additional hero....it's chosen among your friends main hero (the one and only you select at the start, the only one which have an active and a passive skill) or random...it's an additional hero in your party just for the ongoing quest.
After you complete the quest you can add that char as a friend....you can choose him once per day, but every time you do you get 10 points instead of just 5 (this points earn you summon heroes capabilities).
The cool thing is that if both of you are mutually friends, and you play, your main heroes both level up....so you want to have active players as friends...so you will get powerful heroes to aid you in high level quests.
The difficult thing is that almost everyone now share the same name....

I wrote this in a hurry on my iPad....hope it helps to give you a general idea...ask if you need help (and if I know :))
There is an actual game guide hidden in the settings.

Despite all this difficult to learn things...I'm liking the gameplay a lot.

This Angel Salvation game is... very interesting. And utterly confusing...
Overall liking it so far!

Right now I really don't get how I am supposed to increase skill levels. The guide tells you that you can do it by strengthening the hero using same-attribute sacrifices. I did that several times and my skill level is still 1.

I noticed that friend's heroes I got in the party also have SL 1, so either it's a mistery for everyone or something isn't working right now.

Also, when I summon heroes, is that "7" gesture actually impacting in any way? I tried being fast, being precise, etc and I still got only imps, dwarves and shepards.

I'm also quite worried about money (actually more than diamonds): to strengthen a hero I need a LOT of it, and I'm not getting anything close to what I'm spending (using the 100k initial treasure). I hope it gets better at higher levels...

Lastly: does doing daily events reward you diamonds? I'm currently being assraped trying them at my level, but if it is so I see it as a nice way to get them shinies :)

edit: re-reading your paragraph, I want to add this. You can change your main hero (leader) with any other from your legion; I think that friend's heroes you see in the list are always their main.

Thanks, I don't have one right now. I had a 3GS before so I already have an account and since I might bite on the iphone 5, I don't want to miss the free games these days.
You'd need iTunes or an iOS device I'm afraid. Perhaps ask someone you know if you can login with your account on their device (or iTunes installation)?

If he has a PC or Mac with iTunes installed he can download the games as long as he has a iTunes/App Store account.

super hexagon is the truth. glad I finally got around to buying it. takes a bit to get into the flow, but once you do, you feel godly.

So, guys... we are just a few hours before the Apple Event. Infinity Blade I and II have gone on sale and there's a new iPhone coming soon. Do you guys think we might get a nice Dungeons surprise, with another showing at the event and a nice "you can download it starting right now" comment?

I really wanna try that game!

I wouldn't be that surprised if it doesn't make their predicted September window and gets slated for late October instead.

Hope I'm wrong ofc.

That wouldn't bother me so much considering Torchlight 2 and Borderlands 2 hit the same time BG is due.

Still, I can't way to play it again, this time in the comfort of my bed, or a couch.

Middle Manager of Justice needs to rerelease already. I'm wanting to play it. I've heard that its like Game Dev Story, and I play that game a lot.
From the "beta," don't get too excited. I've found the game to be rather dull. It's charm persists, but isn't enough to make up for the shallow and uninteresting gameplay. In addition, it really stinks of the F2P model. There just isn't a whole lot to do in the game.

I haven't played it a whole lot, but I do agree that anyone expecting a Game Dev-esque experience will probably be disappointed, since as you said it's clearly built around a F2P model. You'll do more waiting then playing, unless you're into spending money on IAP's.

Yep. Middle Manager is somewhat charming, but it wasn't too long before I really got tired of doing the same thing over and over. I paid 2 bucks for the coin copier (Double Fine has earned at least a little support from me) but that's it. I'll watch for the update upon launch but it's not grabbing me at this point.

The percentage Apple claims is not affected by bandwidth. So you are wrong.

Apple clearly has an interest in reducing bandwidth used by app updates, but the fact that it's not implemented in the form of delta updates yet implies that there is some sort of challenge associated with it that they haven't overcome so far.

You can sort of guess what that challenge might be. I suppose it greatly complicates the approval process (currently, most approvals really only can be the result of an automated process for obvious reasons),

Actually, the approval process is done by humans (as crazy as it may sound, seeing as they get thousands of submissions every week.)

I read once that the majority of submissions aren't serious apps and just contain images of penises and whatnot. So the app reviewers have to wade through thousands of dicks to get their jobs done.

Perhaps not as awesome as apps with male genitalia, I have released a couple new games recently. They might not be exactly what everyone here at NeoGAF is keen on, but I've had very limited resources of late and have been making these apps entirely by myself (art/code/design).

My hope is to build up some funds so I can get back to making serious games again. On that note, I had a small team together earlier this year; we were working on upgrading Synth Racing to be a 'current gen' iOS title. Sadly, without funds to pay people the team fell apart. If you're interested in the progress we had going you can check out some screenshots in my photobucket account starting on page 2.

As for the games I promised I'd mention..

Logo Color Quiz
iTunes Link - FREE

This is a take on the recent popular trend of logo games. However, rather than guess the name; in this game you guess the color of the logo. Version 1.0 just hit this week. I plan on updating it in the near future.

Thesaurus Master
iTunes Link - FREE

In this game the player is tasked with choosing two words that mean the same thing. Each level has twelve words, or six correct matches. Once the level is over the player is shown their results so they're able to see how they did. Admittedly, this is an educational title intended for a much younger audience.

Hopefully I'll be getting back to some more serious fare soon. In the meantime, thanks for your attention. If you'd like to see anything specific in a future upgrade of either the above, please let me know

Here's a Synth Racing teaser.

Looks like iPod Touch owners are going to join iOS gaming again.

Looks slicker than the iPhone 5 tbh.

edit: maybe not? Yikes at those prices.

Those are pretty standard iPod Touch prices. They've always been pricey because they're not subsidized by 2 year cell phone agreements like the iPhones.

Bummed about the ibd no-show, was what I was looking forward most to for the conference.

Probably saving it for the October one which sucks.

No iOS 6 support for 3rd gen iPod Touch and iPad 1? Don't do me like that, man.

I wonder if I'll ever finish my freaking game like that.

People should be happy to read that they've managed to lower the quality of the iPad audio to 22khz (from 44khz) and change the graphic compression from palette-based on the PC to PVRTC in BG:EE so now it's going to be under 2GB installed (vs 3GB on PC).

That's great! Too bad I already freed up the space on my iPad and I hope the downgrade isn't too noticeable.
Any news on when it's coming out? Not tomorrow I guess if they recently made changes to the game.

Yes but there is no $199 entry model anymore.

Also, no Infinity Blade Dungeons today guys. :(

I am totally super hyped for iPod touch 5! Sure it may not be the beast the iPhone 5 is, but it'll haul ass compared to my 4!

Man, I'm gonna get me some walking dead and TWEWY!

It astounds me that there's apparently no solution to this besides cutting down on the sample rate. I'm not an iOS developer, but I can't believe that system resources are so limited that developers couldn't just use more sophisticated compression on the music.

TWEWY being 2.2 GB because of its obviously highly compressible assets not being compressed (or the download wouldn't be under 600mb) astounds me, especially considering the game itself can't be particularly taxing on the system either. Hell, I have many more minutes of music than TWEWY in my jubeat plus downloads and jubeat plus isn't even taking up half a GB yet.

Has it been mentioned how old screens will handle the new iPhone aspect ratio? I think my ideal way would be to have letterboxing by default and ability to fill the screen by zooming slightly as a quick option.

Black bars on both sides. They didn't mention an option to stretch.

Just got an email that says TTR Pocket is free to celebrate the new iPhone, grab it people!

We've been playing the hell out of it with the wife during the summer. Local MP with an iPhone and an iPad is fantastic. Just wish the pocket version had all the expansions of the iPad version.

Yeah, I agree... TWEWY has just got to be a lack of optimization I think, for such a drastic difference. It's not like app compression is done with LZMA or anything super-complex afaik. I've seen quite a few apps with distinct 2D styled graphics go from very large (500MB+) to reasonable ~100MB when the dev figured out how to better optimize their graphics, without sacrificing quality because people were upset at the size. This was evident in that the packed app was significantly smaller than the installed app, like with TWEWY.

But you can't doubt SE's talents, not when they can make what was once a 4MB game like Chrono Trigger take up over 600MBs and look no better lol. Perhaps it's just in their nature to go for the larger sized games.

I think stuff like Dead Trigger, while maybe not being everyone's favorite game, show a high technical level of understanding by being under 200MB yet looking like apps that are 1GB or more.

Just a pet peeve here: it will be pillarboxing in this case, not letterboxing.

That's a little disappointing. Having the option to download the higher quality bitrate as DLC (as someone mentioned above) would be my way to go. The hit that Gratuitous Space Battles (iPAD) took with the audio is so noticeable that it's gross. I'd prefer the larger size with better resolution audio and video than something diminished to fit. I mean, if we're already paying 10.00, which is already a smaller market, and we're already hardcore, give us the best and let us decide if we want to chop it down.

But it's bumped up from 8GB base to 32GB base. Worth the extra $100 for sure.

What is it? I don't know what to search for in the app store.

Thanks! Downloading now, never played this.

Ugh, I'm stupid, I hate it when people only use acronyms and I just did. It's Ticket to Ride Pocket. Ironically, I don't have the link handy because I'm posting from my iPhone.

Haha it's alright, thanks for letting us know, I would have missed out otherwise
