Apple's September 12 Event | It's almost here.

Can anyone please explain to me why (cash grabbing reasons aside) Apple aren't using Micro USB? There has to be a reason.... right guys?
 
So is the MDM9615M upgraded from the iPad 3? May that means it might work here in Australia

Is there really any need to start a whole new thread for the exact same thing as this one?

This one still has 17,000 posts to go, and each device will get its own thread as it's announced, anyway.

There is no other reason. They get money from the adapter, and probably get a license fee from all the companies who make them as well.

I'm honestly surprised Apple hasn't gone with proprietary headphone jacks yet.

We'll mark the page where the keynote actually starts so giga can put that link in the OP for anyone who wants to later follow the GAF discussion as the keynote was happening, and not all the pre-talk.

Because in the past the event thread isn't started until the day of the actual event and it keeps the discussion more focused. I don't have a problem with this being the thread, I just wanted to be sure we're all on the same page. Starting a thread a week ahead of time is a bit unconventional.

Beyond the A6, the new photos also show that the Qualcomm chip located opposite the nano-SIM tray from the A6 is indeed the MDM9615M modem, which has long been rumored as the chip to supply LTE compatibility for the iPhone 5. As noted in our forums, Apple's leaky search engine has also just revealed that the company will be posting a page addressing the new iPhone's LTE capabilities.


The other side of the logic board reveals flash memory from Hynix, as well as several other chips from the likes of Murata, Skyworks, and Avago supporting such functions as Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, power amplification, gyroscope/accelerometer, and more. Apple has been rumored to be cutting back on Samsung memory orders, but the presence of Hynix memory is not explicit proof of such a move given that Apple has long sourced memory from multiple suppliers as seen in teardowns showing memory from Samsung, Toshiba and others at various times.

Wrong again bob.

The 30pin already had its (albeit few) benefits over micro USB, and this new jack will topple that as well. Considering they'll be branding it 'lightning', i'm guessing it provides faster transfer/charging speeds.

It isn't a pure cash grab, which quite frankly makes no sense. As if they'd make billions on selling dongles that will be obsolete in a years time anyway.
 
Last night, right on cue, I dropped my 3gs on the curb and smashed the glass. I was hoping to hold out until the next Nexus line before I upgraded, but I have no choice now. Hopefully Apple shows something new. All the rumors so far have been underwhelming.

Sorry, but how is the cable they're using faster than a USB cable? Especially since it's being plugged into a USB port anyway.
 
Just read a particularly nasty piece on BBC on the upcoming iPhone from Dan Lyons (legendary Apple basher). Not gonna link to it cause he doesn't deserve the page views, but it's so laughably bad, he manages to include every single childish troll line in a single article, completely bashing something that hasn't even been shown yet. Amazing, and what's more amazing is that he gets payed for this shit, and is considered a 'technology pundit' with space on BBC.
 
Have no one checked out the pin-outs of the old connector? USB has 4 pins. +5V, GND, and a data-pair (data+, data-).

There are 4 pins alone for audio on the current dock-connector - line in L/R, line out L/R. There's 1 pin for sending audio over the other pins and not using speakers. There's one pin for determining the type of accessory connected, via various resistances, and there's USB and Firewire pins.


Sure, I'm excited about a simpler 8 pin, but that means bye bye dedicated audio out pins, and as a guy that wants to by-pass the onboard amplifier to use my own FiiO portable, I am everything but unnerved.

Apple can transfer what they want over it, audio, hdmi etc and charge. They have control over third party accesories and can make a few bucks.

Are USB 3.0 connectors backwards compatible with USB 2.0? Myself and many others don't have anything with USB 3.0 on it. I'd assume that we'd just have to use the wall charger coupled with syncing via wi-fi if that's the direction they go.

I am also concerned about this. And, even moreso by the possibility that ipod DACs like the Fostex HP-P1 or HRT istreamer won't work anymore.

But, I am pretty sure that the firewire pins were removed from the 30 pin connector a few years back. so hopefully there's enough left for decent audio out from the dock both digital and analog)

Aside from all the other reasons, Micro USB is notoriously flimsy. Every time I plug it into my HP TouchPad I'm scared of it breaking. I've read too many incidents of that happening.

I guess installing official apps, charging it once it's below 30% every night, backing up the thing once a month and making sure it's never more than 50-60% full on data is using it wrong then. Mine's definitely slowed down a notch over the past year.
