They won't get near to what Nintendo's selling them at trade price, but I definitely expect a price war. If MCV is right then they have about £45 breathing room between what they bought them at, and the current prices, with which to do some cutting. They can make some of this back on games and accessories, plus being the cheapest on such a high profile gadget -- especially when you sell more than games -- is going to draw people to their stores in search of other bargains this Christmas, whether it's on other presents or food for the season.
They have very a strong motivation to want to undercut their rivals when you think of it that way, even moreso considering the season.

Three or four years ago I would have agreed with you, but nowadays the supermarkets don't give a shit about gaming.
In theory that's all fine but in practice it's a little more shaky. This logic seems built on the assumption that the WiiU will generate a wave of Wii esque demand.
If anything I'd expect it to be closer to the Vita when it initially went on sale. Did Tesco heavily discount it? No. Why would they?
This basically makes my point more succinctly.
This no RRP thing that Nintendo does helps consumers overall, the retailers rape everyone at launch, but after that prices drop once the launch hype subsides.

Of course they do. There were price wars for the last two brand new games systems (3DS and Vita) that came out. Admittedly, those were handhelds and this is a console, but I very much doubt the supermarkets can resist not undercutting themselves for long. First it'll be smaller drops, like £2-£3, but in the run up to the launch you could see the prices go down fairly significantly (upwards of £20-£30), especially if the public deems £250-£300 too much.
Oh that's funny, because I got my Vita for £199 on launch day from Tesco. RRP was £229.99.
If the Wii U generates Wii-levels of demand, then they've already sold their initial allocation in days and they have no reason to lower the price. If it's not meeting expectations, that gives them an even greater incentive to cut.
At any rate, I'm holding out. £250-£300 is far too much. Should be £200-£250.

I still don't think that we'll see the UK supermarkets discount the WiiU that heavily but I stand corrected if you managed to snag a Vita deal like that from Tesco.
