Wii-U - Amazon listing UK prices and launch date

White WiiU is no.15 in Amazon sales rank now. Premium version is no.2. People are paying these ridiculous prices.

Ridiculous? It costs me £70 to put four days worth of petrol in my car (50 litres). My electricity bill for my flat is £80 a month and a regular shopping trip for food is well over £120. Wii U for £300 that will last for five years? It's not expensive.

So much for competition... they are all competing for who can get the highest price. £185 is the conversion of the US price, I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon's £200 is the correct price for the UK but many had it higher so Amazon also went up.

Keep in mind we're a good few months away from launch now. Not much point in competing before they see how much people are willing to pay. If they get a lukewarm reception in the first week at their ridiculous £->$ conversions, they'll likely have the bidding war then.

I don't drive a car. Turn off some lights. Eat less. Seriously, how many do you live with, and how often do you buy for?! It's expensive for some people. Myself included. Also, you've defeated your own point because if your expenses are so comparatively high, can you afford like... three food trips on a luxury item?

Oh God, rly? Sounds like it's time for a console launch.

£80 electric a month? Damn, probably £50 max for me and thats a house not a flat.

Yep. Hopefully some retailer will have the stones to drop it and start a price war.

FYI: Just been chatting to an Amazon customer service rep. They won't be honouring any of the earlier £199 prices it seems. *surprise*

Funny, that's not what I heard. Amazon Customer Services is apparently saying to people I've spoken to that they can't class it as a mispricing because of the fact that a RRP wasn't set.

If true, God bless the EU. :D

I don;t think the US one includes sales tax as it's different for each state. In the UK it's a flat 20% so it get's accounted for.

Gotta love Chris Morris :)

I could handle a 20% markup though. But £80 is obscene.

I get VAT off so shouldn't complain too much I suppose.

Gonna watch some brass eye in honour of your avvy now :)

My sister is a lawyer specializing in EU laws.

If its on Amazon UK and they cancel your order, you have no legal recourse, this has already been tested before in court here.

A price on a website means nothing, even if their online system accepts the order.

Look up "Invitation to treat"

See:

Does a store have to accept your order?
Unfortunately, under contract law in many cases the retailer doesn’t have to honour an order when it’s made after a pricing glitch or mistake.

If the mistake occurs in a shop the retailer can refuse your money at the till and withdraw the product from sale while it prices it correctly. This is because the retailer is not actually ‘offering to sell’ the goods for the price indicated; it is what the law calls an ‘invitation to treat’ i.e. the retailer is inviting customers to make an offer to buy. However, they can refuse to accept the customer’s money as there’s no contract between the two parties.

It gets a bit more complicated when goods are sold online as it depends on whether a contract has been made between the two parties.

The retailer needs to accept the customer’s order for there to be a contract. If it hasn’t accepted the order it can withdraw the product from sale and cancel the order. Exactly where you stand will depend on the website’s terms and conditions and the wording of any e-mail sent to you when you placed the order.

Many websites say in their terms that an order is only accepted when the goods are dispatched.
Any e-mail sent to the customer beforehand is simply an acknowledgement of receipt – as opposed to acceptance - of the order.

Didn't stop them before. They can simply call it an error and do what they like unfortunately. It's in their T&Cs for Price Guarantee :(

It's almost worse that they had a super reasonable price up at first, then bailed on it. It's like waving a cookie in your face then poking you in the eye with a fat fucking finger.

Urgh, I saw it for £199 during the conference as well. Why didn't I have the foresight to know Bayonetta 2 would be announced...

Yeah, this is probably my problem as well. Under £200 does seem to break that "mental barrier", though.

The fuck are you doing to blow £80 a month on electricity? And you're driving ~1000km every four days? Looks like you've got expensive tastes :p

I am just trying to put it into perspective. It doesn't feel expensive when you think of things like that. £300 doesn't get you very far these days, so for something like a new games console that will last for years, it's not all that bad really.

I am also not complaining about how much things cost either. £80 for electric is typical in the UK, especially as we don't have a gas supply. Food is FUCKING expensive. There are two of us and we do a food shop like that every two weeks probably with bits and pieces in-between.

Whoa, what's that 3 months of Nintendo Network Premium? Is it different to that thing in Japan where you get 10% off eShop purchases?

I think that's because Nintendo said it would start in three months, and clearly they got confused.

How do I find the costumer service again? I kinda forgot.

80ish miles a day. 2.0 litre petrol Ford Focus. Nothing special. I get 400 miles out of a tank. Shitty mileage.

Yep. And shows how much wiggle room they had too. Just chose to shaft us instead.

It's very telling. I don't doubt at all that it will drop to £200 again. If not on Amazon, then somewhere. Waiting game time.

Writing thousands of posts on GAF bragging about his huge disposable income? :P

Easily £200 a month on shopping for two here. £60 a month Electric.

Ad the worst thing about UK is the public tv, its really terrible and you pay for it.

I could use that same flawed logic to explain why a £10 carton of milk isn't expensive.

Yeah, £200 for two sounds reasonable, about £100 for me for myself.

This guy makes it all okay <3

Anyway let's not derail the thread into a tirade on why our country is terrible.

Even if it is the case that the Wii U is multiple times more powerful than the 360 (I'm sceptical - people are too quick to take unsourced leaks as fact IMO), it's a hard sell when none of the current games on the Wii U look any better than those on the 360, let alone alone 3-4 times better.

It was £229.99 for the Core, and £279.99 for the Premium.

That's always the case with new consoles due to the vast majority of development being done on unfinished/underpowered dev kits. Have a look at the games that launched with the PS3 and 360 years ago. The only 360 title that launched with the 360 was Condemned, the rest of them looked like Xbox titles.

And I'm quite confident that those specs are accurate, Bgassassin, IdeaMan and lherre have been right with everything so far. People expecting the gap between the U and PS4/720 to be anywhere near the gap between the Wii and PS3/360 and expecting a similar leap in eye candy quality that we saw between last gen and this gen are setting themselves up for major disappointment. I'm quite looking forward to the inevitable Nerd-Rage tbh lol.

I did expect it to be around £250-£299, but there's no way I'm ordering after seeing the cheaper prices earlier.

It's more expensive that I'd like, no doubt, but I agree that it's still not that much money in the grand scheme of things. I got a Wii on launch day, and it's still running absolutely flawlessly... £300 for something that'll last me the next 6 years isn't really all that much.

well I pre ordered the premium because I want the console and zombiu the price difference is £5 I actually would prefer the white unit. Hopefully the price will come down.

This is like saying that's OK this pub charges £8 for a pint because meat is expensive these days.

My argument against that is that the first two years there's likely not going to be anything decent. And the money I'd be paying for those two years will probably be discounted from the WiiU when I buy one.

I'm pretty confident stores will start dropping the price, especially amazon. It won't stay 250/300/330 for launch.

Simplygames still has it at 210/250. Are they reliable though?

Who is your supplier and how big is your house?

(last question before we go back to slagging off Nintendo)

N-Power, 2 bedroom flat with my gf.

I don't waste electricity though. I turn the broadband off when I go to bed or go out for the day. My PC automatically goes in to standby 10 minutes out of use. I've got a standby saver for my home theatre/gaming setup. I'm energy-saving bulb obsessive and I check the power consumption of everything. I do have gas though too, that's another £20/month, so £50 total/month.

No it's not. Everything is expensive in the UK. People just need to fucking deal with it. Or, don't buy one. I'll have a look through the iPhone 5 thread to see if the same people are complaining about the price of that.

Yeah my premium comes out at £240 delivered. ZU package would be £277. So I could just get a separate copy of ZombiU and it'll come out cheaper

Impressive. Wonder how much my Virgin superhub sucks away when it's just sitting there. To be fair, I turn the mains off for my Plasma when I am not using it, the only things left powered are my fridge/freezer, Sky HD box, Macbook and router.

We have Economy 7 because we use old storage heaters instead of gas. I am sure it could be cheaper. We are actually in the process of moving house, will be interesting to see the cost once we are in.

Anyway, really really get back on topic!

Bayo 2 alone is worth at least £100 of the asking price :P
And that's good for you my friend, but untill I see some Smash/Metroid on the system, I'll hold off.

I understand £300 isn't much for you, but comparing a stupidly expensive item to an absurdly expensive item doesn't make it sting my wallet any less. Should we just submit to everything being too high of a price?!

I preordered for £300 and I don't feel bad about it for myself or others.

I don't expect it to stay at that price, though.

Lol, that made me chuckle ;oD

Am tempted to order that ZombiU bundle for £330, probably best to get in early just in case there's a short supply. Didn't have that problem with the Wii due to a friend of a work colleague being an area manager of Game so me and a few workmates were guaranteed at the front of the queue lol. It also coincided with a Christmas bonus too which was great. Am not well enough to work at the moment though so have had to save some money for it.
