LOL THAT FLAVOR TEXT.

Also, every guild symbol there shares a color with the guild neighboring it. And the colors are split into a pair of pairs, in the order that they appear on the back of cards. Lots of nice thouches.

Golgari is also at the bottom, I wonder if that was intentional?
Azorius/Golgari as the top/bottom is definitely intentional. In the flavor pieces they've done those two guilds seem to recognize that they're both super essential to keeping the place functioning, even if they have vastly different approaches to doing so.

Skill testing cards are important for limited, both at the high and low ends. I like that this is in the set, even though I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Important for the game as a whole as well. They've talked in the past about how they feel that learning that some cards that look good are actually bad is an important part of "getting into" Magic.

Flawless victory on that flavor text.

If only Felidar Sovreign was in standard, GW Lifegain miiiiiiiiiiight have been a legitimate way to win.

Yup.

The demon is a 6/6 Flyer for 4cmc that your opponent can tap during combat by saccing a creature, which also puts a +1/+1 counter on him. He's great against decks that don't run tokens or lots and lots of creatures. Side him in against tempo and control maybe.

Weird.

Print graveyard set.
Print set with tons of graveyard hate.

Problem?

Thank the lord Pithing Needle is back. That's one of the few cards that should be in standard into perpetuity. If they print a broken Planeswalker again, this fixes it.

Love that 2-drop for red. Will be a RDW staple if RDW is a deck post rotation. Does a great job punishing control. Oh, and he tells Gravecrawler to go guck himself

A fantastic card for creature decks to bring in against zombies as well.

And RDW will definitely be a deck post rotation with shocklands running around. Against multicolored decks, there's a good chance RDW only needs to hit 18 or 16 damage to win instead of 20, which is huge.

What is RDW losing with rotation?

Shrine of Burning Rage is a huge loss.

Dat presalt.

Shrine of burning rage...and uh, nothing that I can think of. RDW isn't exactly setting the world of fire right now though, so he probably meant if RDW is actually a thing.

And no salt. Just trying to help y'all out. It's just a terrible card that will just make you lose the game. I don't want to see that happen to you guys.

I don't mind Wizard's printing hosers, and overall I think they do a good job, but the reasons they give in their articles are so dumb.

The Cavern one was stupid ("we didn't like Snapcaster + Mana Leak... we wanted some better fixing for creature decks... so we put the answers on the same card"). The new one for Ash Zealot is bullshit as well
It's pretty clear that this card is good against Snapcaster Mage, but that's not the real reason we made the card. We had several decks in our Future Future League that made heavy use of the graveyard for flashback spells. We had Burning Vengeance decks with Forbidden Alchemy and such, and we also had Frites-like decks with Unburial Rites, Faithless Looting, and Tracker's Instincts. There were also plenty of Gravecrawlers creeping around. The marginal value you get from playing against Snapcaster Mage decks with this card is certainly not zero, but this card is hardly at its best if the only thing on the other side for it to pay attention to is Snapcasters.
It's apparently not just about Snapcaster, in their testing they had a lot of decks doing interesting things with flashback (not necessarily powerful) and they wanted to mess with them. As if Forbidden Alchemy was something they needed to put hurt on :/

And then he tops it off with this.

First Strike?

We found in playtesting that it was very important to this card's purpose that it not die in combat with a Snapcaster Mage, so we gave it first strike.

Oh, so it is about Snapcaster.

Psychic Spiral could be an interesting alt wincon for a self mill deck.

I think you're missing the point. What other cheap flash creatures are in Standard right now? Ambush Viper? Okay, but nobody ever runs that thing. It's important that you don't swing with this thing, have your opponent flash in Snapcaster before blocks, and trade. If it dies to more expensive flash creatures, oh well - they're bigger and better and supposed to beat it. But Snapcaster shouldn't beat this thing on the axis of creature combat.

I'm in love with Ash Zealot. I just wish RDW had enough viable cards to actually be a deck.

We have...

Bonfire of the Damned
StromKirk Noble
Hellrider
Searing Spear
Slumbering Dragon (lol)
and maybe Guttersnipe

and little else. It's still going to be awhile before mono-red comes back in style.

I've brewed up an interesting frame of a mono-red goblin burny deck. Right now, it's too reliant on Krenko/Hellrider/Bonfire to be top tier, but I'm holding out hope for some help from RTR.

How does Krenko work without Chieftain? That seemed to be the common concern when I was initially playtesting Goblins.
Is Thundermaw Hellkite just too expensive for RDW? Seems like a pretty good way to push through the last five damage.
He is. Mono-red really wants to top out it's curve, ideally, at 3, with maybe a couple of 4 cmc finishers (Koth, Hellrider, Hero of Oxid Ridge). Anything beyond that slows the deck down way too much.
