Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

OMG. This is so awesome. I am probably going to put another 200 hours into the game like Tri. Hopefully they will fix the room so that more than 4 people can enter it.

how fun is the game if you mostly play it single player? it's not like i'll never play it multi but circumstances doesn't allow much multiplayer for me. I know i'll like the hunting and crafting aspects though.

There are different paths to Monster Hunter enjoyment, this is important. Some fans here have said there's really no game for them without online. Others like me are different.

I will say I've still a lot to learn about the game and only played some online here and there, and I'm looking forward to getting more into that with the HD version. The reason I've focused so on single player is a) I'm generally more of a single player guy, b) the concept of this game appealed to me as a single player. Let's just say I'm more excited about it as 'Dark Souls with only bosses' than as something sorta like PSO.

I didn't know much about this series for a while, but when I started looking into it, the real draw was the idea. The idea of you living as a hunter, prepping and prepping for big fights, finally going out into that epic, long-drawn battle with a big beast. I mean, that's just human nature, I feel, that thrill of the big hunt. There's a little more story in 3 than earlier MH games, but not much. It just gives you a narrative structure, and I feel that's enough, as you sort of fill in the gaps. The world is well realized, with 'ecology' and motivated monster behaviour, so you can get into character and feel that you're really going out into the wild world to take down your Moby Dick. The art design is top notch.

Maybe I'm too romantic, but that concept of the long, lonely fight against a formidable foe is still the major pull for me. The multiplayer stuff opens up more, you get teamwork, new strategies, the social aspect. But the reason I still get that satisfied feeling inside from picking up and looking at the MH3 cover is because I know how good it feels to be the badass who takes down huge, beautiful monsters on my own.

This is gonna be awesome. Playing with the Controller Pro while the GamePad acts as my map/inventory/hud/whatnot, while playing online with you guys....this is gonna be sick!

I really think they should have just done away with this "expansion pack" and come out with MH4 on the Wii U in the spring like the japanese version of the 3DS. >_>

I'm confused, if the 3DS version doesn't have online multiplayer why is it taking them so long to release it? It's not like they have to localize it from scratch..

God no.

I have no idea what MH4 is even going to be, It might end up like Tri and have very little content.

Consoles need a proper meaty MH with all the weapons and tons of monsters.

good lord, that picture is getting around a lot!

I can't wait to see it - but we got a near identical grab for the English and Japanese (with the Japanese/English player text being translated (?) )

I'm sure it's going to look great, but the screen doesn't do justice to what i'm expecting from Capcom.

... i'm also salty because i can't go TGS this year and i know they'll probably crack out pant tighteningly nice footage. :/

Unlikely perhaps but wouldn't it be great to get the official guide in a translated edition?

That would be nice, but what would be nicer is if Udon releases the MH Gen 3 illustrations material. I'm not sure if there is such a book yet, but it would be nice.

On thing I hope is in Tri ultimate is the ability to change control schemes on the fly.
This probably only effects me, but I would still really like it.

Specifically I liked MH1 style controls, but I didn't use them in Tri because controlling the camera claw style under water was just not pleasant. If I had the option I could use MH1 90% of the time and switch to button based attacks when ever I had to go under water.

A few questions:
I was HR 120 on MHT. Do I have to start all over in 3G, equipment from scratch, etc.?
You'll have to start over because 3G changed a lot of equipment around. The grind is more forgiving in 3G, though: instead of having to grind to a specific HR to unlock new quests, you can activate urgents as soon as you beat the prerequisites for them. Until online post-game, anyways.

How much harder does 3G get than Alatreon/Jho?

Online monster health is scaled to two players in 3G rather than four in Tri. Anecdotal testimonials claim 3G is harder than Tri.

New abilities on armors?
Yes, plus there's the whole G-rank armor business which are also different visually from their LR/HR counterparts.

Interesting new set possibilities?
Endgame G-rank armors have verrrrry interesting skills on them.

How is the online better?
Pixie dust? If MH3U's online is anything like MH3P HD's, it'll be absolutely awful. If Capcpom decides not to be lazy and integrates online well with the theoretical Wii U unified account system then it should be tolerable at least.

How many new fights, not counting difficulties and reskins with slight change-ups, are there?
Compared strictly to Tri and not MHP3 or MHFU, eleven new monsters. "Slight change-ups" is subjective, but you'll probably find certain subspecies to play completely different... for example, the White Lagiacrus is solely a land-based fight and has new attacks built around that playstyle.

Also, 3G adds three? more weapon types over Tri and gives old weapons some new toys to play with.

Thank you for those responses. Does the Switch-Axe not suck in 3G? :-)

That is so epic and so never coming here. I think most will just use the fan sites that list the necessaries to leap frog ahead in the game rather than buy a guide.

if you don't use switch axe then a hearty "www" at you

Switch Axe is too complex. :-\ Like the Bow Gun.

Great Sword/Longsword. <3 Gonna try out Dual Swords when this hits.

Wait, WTF happened to divinewh.im?? (Tri DB)

Unless they got an overhaul since MH1, dual swords are kinda bleh.

There the most awkward weapon in the series, long canned animations and one button spamming. They honestly felt like they were from a completely different game.

As someone who uses the hammer, I hate people who use long swords. Stop knocking me over and let me knock this thing out!

Switch axe was by far the most fun weapon in tri, I always used it, even if people are babies.

Also that guide looks like a god damn phone book.
I thought the Switch-Axe was boring, and it had pitiful DPS.

Good long sword users don't have this problem, just the ones who mash the spirit combo.

Why can't the HP scale to number of players?
I'm guessing they want to avoid people feeling like they're making the game harder if they add more players to their party. Say, if a newbie joins you, difficulty-wise you'd have an easier time without him, which is counter-intuitive. Another player should always be a positive thing.

I guess having more targets always makes a monster easier... but that doesn't seem enough.

If it bothered Capcom that much to have the HP balanced to 4 players without 4 players, they could have completed the party to 4 with cats (with the option for the party to opt out).

I used them a bit in P3rd. They were pretty good for a while.

The biggest cons to them are obviously:
-Have to be point-blank on a monster to hit them basically.
-Long animations (especially in Demon Mode)
-Can't block/roll while attacking (more on this in a sec)
-Demon Mode drains the unholy hell out of your Stamina (slightly negated by Dash Juice, though it won't last as long)
-Eats through Sharpness semi-quick (having that skill that reduces Sharpness loss helps a ton)

Some very good pros though:
-Can stack a lot of Attack Bonuses (hit enemies in Demon Mode to fill up a bar and it gives you an attack and atk spd. bonus; Demon Mode also gives an innate attack bonus).
-Can wreck monsters with long combos (with some neat skill combos and items, you can nearly chain infinite combos).
-Can "dash" around enemies (it's basically evasion if timed right)
-Capable of VERY impressive damage over time (gotta keep hitting them!)

Though I prefer SnS and Bows mostly.

What else do Hammer users do? Unless it's Diablos...
I still go for the head on Diablos.

Bad ones are aimless so they send party members flying. It's so annoying.

But nothing is more annoying than constantly being tripped over by a trigger happy Long Sword user in your vicinity.

Wait what, I thought it was normal to hammer Diablos' head.

It has higher defense, but if done right you can nail a KO on him while he's stuck after a sound bomb. Also, dang everything needs those stupid horns. I always go for the head.

(it's also significantly more fun then going for the belly, but dude, fun? that is so 1990)

You just need to retaliate against the Long Sword user. Long Sword users that mash the spirit attack generally survive by the monster ignoring them for other players, and simply healing when they get hit. So, go out of your way to smack the Long Sword user around and into the boss! Usually 1 retaliatory smack puts them in their place.

I think it has like 90% defense in the head region. It's also really hard to KO since it likes to dive underground for long periods of time. If your teammates are idiots and spread out, it's also dashing across the screen.

It's better if a Greatsword user takes whaps at the head instead of a Hammer user. I typically use your logic, though, and feel as though it's better for me to sacrifice my DPS to let everyone wail on it for a bit. Assuming you have a party of 4.

Which reminds me. Any word on whether 3G Wii U will have 8 player lobbies? I know the JP Tri version allowed 8, but it was cut to 4 in the US release.

Switch Axe or blade mode to be specific is one of the best weapons to use with evasion skills. Each strike is quick so you can time your rolls and side steps easily to the monster's next attack. You can also attack right after a forward roll with out hesitation. Don't like not having a shield to block attacks/roars? Just jump through them. Well at least most attacks and the shorter roars anyway you can. Evasion skills are so fun. I never realized it until I was pretty deep into the game, well over 100HR. I was pretty much bowgun only unill rank 100 though :P Can't wait to finally claim my Jho axe that should have been in Tri.

Let us all get along. LS users, hammer users, whatever . Drink your goldenfish brew and let us prance in the usual spot.
