FTL: a game about managing a spaceship in an infinite galaxy

Dagnabbit' I was just one hull away from getting the slug cruiser, and it just FTL away...

It's weird but probably my favourite thing is when the ship is half dead and engulfed in flames and you have 2-3 crew left after the fight. Trying to figure out how to save the ship is about the most fun I have, running guys from medbay with 0 oxygen trying to get the O2 going and having to make trips while judging how much they can do before dying.
I agree. Working with at as little fumes as you have left and see just how far you can get. At one end point, I sold all my weapons just to get fuel and see how far I could push it. Lasted nearly a whole sector.

I agree. That's why they need an endless mode. I think it's a lot of fun to be limping home, but not when you know there is some nearly unbeatable boss at the end.

Edit: ^^^ Whaaaaaaa

I don't think there is one after you beat the boss, unless I'm missing something.

The replay value seems to come from finding all the special ships and unlocking the variants of each. (Well, and the score chase).

I'm pretty sure it has one, but you have to beat the game once.

I doubt that since no one has mentioned it so far. Only beaten the game on easy but nothing for me.

There used to be a grayed out option once you'd beaten the game maybe a half-dozen versions ago? I thought they'd patched it in. Oh well.

Just lost because I accidentally killed my boarding crew during the first final encounter.
fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

I still almost had that one too. On the very last exchange of volleys (of the last incarnation) it just survived.
I had crap weapons going into the final system until some kind stranger gave me a Glaive. Between Ion Bombs, Glaive, Cloak and my Mantis wrecking crew I was destroying everything. Then I killed those brave Mantis commandos when I forgot to stop shooting the stupid ship.

hmmm is lvl1 stealth preferrable to higher lvl?

I just wish you can toggle on and off at will (can you?).

No, but there is an augment where you can shoot without it affecting your stealth.

I know because I bought it on my Kessler thinking it said I can charge my weapons even if the target is stealthed :/

Man I don't even know why I keep playing this. I never even get very far but it's like crack. Very, very good stuff. Best $9 I've spent in a long time...and I never get hooked on stuff like this. It's very cool.

Can't seem to find the tool tips that say what each section of my ship/attacking ship is and how to send my guys back to put out fires?

Died on third jump of tutorial woops!

You can hover over the system icons at the bottom of the screen for descriptions. Not sure what you're asking in the 2nd question.

You select them like an rts with left click and then just right click where you want them to go. If you just put them in the room with a fire they'll just start putting it out.

Nice additions I wouldn't mind added.
- hot-keys for drones, cloak.
- option to sell energy, missiles, and drone scrap for scrap at stores.

YES it took 25 hours but I finally beat the boss on easy (the fact it feels like such an accomplishment even on easy is a testament to how damn hard this game is). It was a close run though I only had 2 bars of hull left most of my crew were left dead and bleeding on the bulkhead floor and with my final volley I slammed five shots straight into that bastard and BOOM.

This is a fantastic game. I hope the game gets developed further but right now I am going back to "normal" and seeing if I can beat the boss on that level.

God damn it.

I wish they hadn't included an Easy mode and I wish I'd never tried it.

Definitely. Using all of the available options to find your way through a seemingly impossible scenario is exhilarating. At some point you're like "Yeah, board me. See how that works out for ya." And then you probably die, but still.

Yeah, had a victory today and the grayed out option was definitely removed somewhere along the way in beta, was surprised and disappointed.

I know that feeling all too well. 9/10 you're your boarding parties worst enemy.

This has been brought up in the FTL forums and I remember the devs saying they didn't want it. The reasoning was that having excess of something might make you more likely to make you rethink your choices. E.g., "I've got a lot of missiles. Maybe I should buy this bomb launcher."

It's also partly a balance issue. If you could sell that stuff, they'd just have to cut down on the amount of scrap given out to balance out the difficulty.

I wish they hadn't included an Easy mode and I wish I'd never tried it.

Why? What's so different about easy?

Its a cheap way out and people are tempted to use it. Sort of glad they included it though. Managed to get 8/9 base ships (and 4 Layout B designs) within 20 hours now. Cant imagine how long it would have taken to do that with way less scraps.

Getting that last base ship will take a while.. oh and I still havent managed to get any of the Stealth achievements. DAMN STEALTH SHIP YOU.

Finally managed to make it through on easy after 7 tries. I got really lucky with lots of weapons and a drone arm that allowed me to recycle my drones. Facing the boss I had Artemis and Breach Missiles, Burst and Hull Laser 2's and 2 Anti-Ship Drone 1's. It ate through just about everything on the way up to the boss, including the first fight. The second fight I ended up taking some damage before my boarding party took out the enemy drone control and then I accidentally blew up the ship before teleporting my elite combat mantis and slug back to my ship. >_<

Over the course of that run I had probably another 5 weapons that I ended up selling. Every special event was someone giving me a weapon and missiles. Had 40 missiles going into the final area.

Those would be nice. I think you can hotkey drones with 5-6 etc., but I was just about to ask if there's a hotkey for cloak. Since there's a timing aspect to dodging with it, it would be nice not to have to click the icon.

Yeah, I kind of figured balance would be the problem. It's just sometimes I'm 3 scrap short, and I'd rather sell something of a small figure than leave and take the trip back.

It reminds me of a board game called Red November. I died in a very similar situation to the OP, I even had advance warning their was a sun there.

It's one of those ruthless games, where each time you get a little but further. Like a rogue-like in space.

This game is amazing. Fantastic music, fun spaceship management system, simple but addictive combat system, great roguelike/survival mechanics. I'm really sad I didn't kickstart this.

BUY THIS GAME, all roguelike fans. Heck, just do it if you like space games in general.

Hmm, beginning to think Rockmen might be better value boarders than Mantis, which might be best off for ship defence

cleared the enemy ship just as a missile hit mine and exploded it. god fucking damnit

I don't see any need for hotkeys when you can pause at any time and everything you can do is presented on the screen.

Okay I got to boss fight with my engi..omg.

Died than was like hey I can use my new ship..stealth cruiser. Loaded it up and was like ehh this may harder.

Yeah, its definitely harder in the beginning but with the right augments, like the Weapon Preigniter and the one where weapons don't hinder your stealth, its pretty much GG. Shields also help a lot.

Alright, I bought this earlier today from Toma's recommendation (and TotalBiscuit's review), and I've got to say I like it. Almost made it to the end of Stage 2 before I died, but I'd like to think managing to defeat 2 of the strong Rebel Wave ships on one crew member is at least decent.

The moments leading up to this were some intense shit.

Rafn heroically fought off two aliens who boarded the ship while CY-heng repaired the door systems that they broke. Upon which a solar flare hit lighting half the ship on fire (all the while the pilot dodging a ridiculous number of missiles). Both nearly dead, CY-heng and Rafn dashed through the fire riddled ship to the destroyed oxygen systems room to put out the fire there and repair it. After sealing them in I opened all of the bay doors to get rid of as much fire as possible and prayed that they would repair the oxygen system in time. Game's awesome.
