Damn, thought I could take down the rebel ship with 2 basic lasers, an ion and a heavy + anti ship and defense drone. No luck. I didn't come across any teleporting bombs and I only had three upgraded mantis dudes with me to raid.
If I had the bombs, I would've kept on bombing their medic room while trying to destroy each gun.
edit - gg didn't realize there are no doors to the weapons systems on the rebel ship, I should've been teleporting there lolol.
What is the best tactic for dealing with boarders? I try and fight with all of my guys in the med bay, but the standard tactic for that seems to be they will just go and bust up the oxygen system. My crew is just terrible at fighting them off, and I always lose at least 1 crewman. More than once I've felt I was doing quite well and my ship was in good shape, only to have my entire crew killed by boarders and game over man.
I've had a ton of success using Rockmen to assault enemy ships. Their health is particularly useful with a low level transporter. The Engi ship is a great compliment thanks to its passive healing.
Have to end an FTL post the traditional way.
Unlocked Engi B pretty easily.
Goddamn?

upgrade your doors, keep unnecessary areas in vacuum and let them teleport into that. will at least take a good portion of their health off before they get to occupied areas.

I haven't tried it yet (probably time to do that now), but my guess is that even with a vacuum, just dashing through quickly will be fine and your crew members will only take a little damage (perhaps unrealistic but it's not like you get sucked into space from an open airlock door so whatever).
The idea is to vent unnecessary areas of your ship, combined with maxing blast door levels early, so the invading parties spend quite a while in the hospitality of the vacuum attempting to get through the doors.
This game is in pretty high demand on the usual Steam trading sites, but no one seems to be able to get its name right. Saw "Follow The Light" and "Faster Than Life" so far.
Nothing like having some dudes surprise bored your ship, only for you to open the airlock and suffocate them as they try desperately to shoot down your blast doors.
I realize how imbalanced that would be at defending against invaders but it'd still be funny to see it happen.
Only have stealth/engi ships unlocked. Been sticking to Engi-A while hoping for random ship unlock events because I really like the ship-wide medibay augment and early ion/drone.
Game is fun 'til you hit the boss. Just a really poorly designed encounter that demands you have certain systems installed. All of my runs revolve around obtaining a teleporter or 3-power missiles because of it.

My strategy, although I still haven't won:
1) Try to avoid mantis sectors. (ditto slug sectors imho).
2) Mantis/rock/human. Send those crew (in that order) into the battle first, the other races should try to hide somewhere...
3) Rotate crew from combat to the medbay.
4) Get the first door upgrade. (very cheap, no power requirements, slows fire & boarders, and shows the boarder's location if your sensors are offline [the relevant door flashes red]).
Holy fuck, I finally beat the final boss with the Kestrel! I was so lucky to succeed, and pretty much had a start, with perfect encounters, and an abundance of scrap to go along with it. The final boss was pretty tough, but I managed to hold my own and hull damage never dipped below 50%.
Protip: Ion weapons are devastating when combined with lasers and offensive drones. You can just keep on taking down their shields, let the anti-ship drone work its way around all the non-weapon systems, whilst you hammer away at each of the isolated weapon rooms. If a fire starts in there, you've pretty much taken that weapon out, so you can move on to the next one.
The hardest part, in my opinion, was the
second form, with all the drones. I wasn't properly equipped for it (I replaced my laser with missiles, thinking I'd get more damage in), but luckily I had a fire laser which caused all sorts of havoc in the drone control room, with my anti-ship drone giving the fire in the drone room enough time to take out the drone controls. From there, I just threw missiles at it.
After that, it was relatively simple to finish the job and win the game!
At the end, most of my ship was on fire (I tried as best as I could to use vacuums to put out fires, so my crew could focus on running systems and fighting the boarding party), but the enemy flagship was falling to pieces and it was a beautiful sight. It certainly felt like the mother of all battles!
What do you guys think, should we create a proper OT for it? Won't be too fancy, but with a few more screenshots, review links etc. I can do it if people think we might want one.

Did my first attempt (on easy), had a successful battle with one rebel recon ship, but I then decided to go after some space pirates and.. well.. it was not good. They took out my oxygen, and I er.. failed to notice.
The Osprey is a bad ass ship. Dat fully upgraded artillery gun. The achievements are really well done in this game, makes me want to replay it to get them all and earn more ships
See Diablo3? this is how its done

Yeah, I feel a bit weird when saying this, but the achievements got me to replay the game for the 20 hours of playtime now. So weird most games dont know how to properly use these game assets.
Haha, I really like some of the descriptions. Last night someone jumped me from behind an asteroid and was like "Fear the great pirate [whatever]". I realize that doesn't sound funny at all, but whatever the ACTUAL text said, it was funny.
And I had a crew member named Dolan.
And I like the Mantis messages which revolve around how it is an honor to be killed by them and everything. "You detect a cloud to this silver lining."
Man, got to the final area after having found NO GOOD WEAPONs, but did have long range sensors, shield boost and quicker weapon reloading and dropped scrap into shields so my Kestrel was a pretty decent tank. What am I supposed to do in the last level? Run around try to get upgrades? Rushing the final boss didn't work too well as I had no heavy hitting weapons.
I got a "Fear the Great Pirate <>" event. What made it funny was the guy was a total pushover.

Damn . My Kestrel had a valiant last stand. Managed to cause them some shield issues with the damn default missile and ping away with a level 1 ion and the default starting lasers while the bastard rained down the fire on me

Apparently they used some of the kickstarter money to get a writer to do a passover or three on the project. Money well spent. Though the writing in the betas I was in before was already pretty good.

The Boarding Drone description is really great: (paraphrasing) "A robotic drone that breaks through the hull of an enemy ship and causes havoc. Awesome."

I guess I'll hit my motivation wall as soon as I have every ship/layout unlocked. Looks like that may still take me about 10-15 hours though, so I definitely got my moneys worth.

I'm sucking at this game hard. I've put 10 hours in and only unlocked one ship. *lol* The good thing is that it's not making me hate the game for my own failings at it, it's not hard in the unforgiving sense of Ghosts and Goblins, there is nothing unfair about what it does. So at this rate I'll easily put 50 hours down.
The odd thing about Isaac was that after I'd finally mastered it I put another 150 hours into it. I have pretty much gotten everything I can from it (aside from unlocking the Blue Baby) but I still find myself starting it up at least once a week and doing races.
I don't know if FTL is going to have that kind of a tail for me, but so far I feel the same kind of pull I did with Isaac.
I just got this game after watching a WTF is about it. Looks like a lot of fun. Got it off the dev's website because it's DRM-free and this appears to be the perfect game to have on a laptop. Diving in...
