Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch to release on iOS later this week

I've been dying for a JRPG for my iPhone and I've always wanted to check out Lunar (the magazine ads looked good) but never owned a PS1. Is it good?

I heard the Lunar games are pretty good JRPGs, never played them before though. I may have to check this out.

This is random. Might be my first iOS game since Baldur's Gate got delayed. Don't really need it though, as I have played through the PS1 version multiple times and the PSP version once, so the price needs to be right.

As nice as this is (because it keeps Lunar around), I'm probably going to pass.

I really can't stand playing games like this on my phone due to the touch screen.

Plus, I have my PS1 copy ripped (both SSSC and EB) on my PSP.

Since I have the PSP version I'll pass on this unless there's a crazy sale that's worth picking up.

Still good to see more JRPGs on ios. Although I expect crazy prices like usual.

Victor Ireland am cry

Actually, I'm very interested to see if they butchered re-doing the songs like the PSP version or just cut them.

But, while you wait, why not enjoy a few screens from Class of Heroes 2, coming soon to PSN. :)

Hell yeah!

When I bought the iPad3 I did it thinking only to use it as book and for profeional purposes, but I have found a fantastic portable gaming device lately: TWEWY (but that price...) and the announce of Baldur's Gate, Lunar..¡.

Speaking of which, whats the "best" way to experience Lunar? Sega CD or PS1? Because i've got the PSP version...but i'm not sure if I want to go through that...everyone saying its easier and all that.

PS1 without hesitation. Don't even think further than that. And go play please, it's one of the best JRPGs ever made.

does making up your own lyrics and changing the tempo of the original count as butchering like you did to the original?

Combine this with 'Vay' and now there are TWO whole games I care about on iOS.....cool

I just dropped my ipod touch face down on concrete a few days ago. Its cracked as fuck and being held together by scotch tape. If not for that, this game would be mine.

I wish we could get the psx lunar games on to psn. What I would give to be able to play decent versions of those games on the vita :/ either way, it's nice to see that version get some sort of rerelease.

This might actually help because the fact that this license happened negates the excuses of one of the licensing parties. We'll see.

Does look a bit weird, especially the font. Don't a lot of RPG fonts get changed on IOS? Maybe when being ported it comes out blurry or hard to read.

I disagree. The original Sega CD version is by far superior. It made owning the sydtem back in the day totally worth it.

Not that you can't have that opinion but since the game is the same (generally speaking) + added content (and good added content at that) and polish, your opinion probably won't apply to most people. Especially people that never played it and/or played it starting on PS1 (aka most people).

Actually, I've always wanted to play Lunar (or maybe it was Lunar 2) due to the magazine previews/ads back in the day too, haha.

Same thing happened with Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia.

I kind of wish I had that chance to play them all when I was younger, because when I finally did get around to experiencing them, it wasn't quite as magical as my younger self had imagined. I feel like I would've appreciated them more.

Lunar: Silver Star Story is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. I played through Lunar Legends on GBA and most of the PSP remake 2 years ago, and hated them both. I hope this version does the game justice.

based off the ps1 version? I might be there day one

The translation won't be the same... It'll either be the PSP version's translation, or a new one from scratch. Working Designs may no longer exist in the industry, but all the rights to their work is still in the owner's hands (the company was never bought out, it basically just quietly closed it's doors with only one big forum post to explain it a few years back).

The dubbing and all would have to be from the PSP or redone as well. This won't be a simple port of the PSX version. The Lunar series of the PS1 days are dead, they died when Sony killed Working Designs.

I guess Vic would be a good judge of what the best Lunar is.

It's been about 6 years since I played the PS1 version, but I seem to remember a bit of pop culture flavour of the era. I'd never seen anything like that in a game at the time. I wonder if that still holds up.

I don't think there is a "best" version. They all have plus and minus bulletpoints. I like the general story flow and greater sense of revelation in the SEGA CD version, as well as the Black Dragon storyline/battle (and the way the dragon stuff is handled in general), plus the music, but I'm partial to things like the Opening, Winds Nocturne (Boat Song), and some of the other animations in the PS1 version that really flesh out the emotion of the game.

It's pretty much like Shigema says in the making of disc. Each version of the game is like a different storyteller, emphasizing some things, de-emphasizing other things, getting some details completely wrong, or embellishing other things. It makes it like a living story. I would, however, love to have a "canon" version that blends the best bits from all 3 main versions (with the PSP embarrassing backstory intro completely re-written/voiced - ugh).
