Mother Jones: "Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters"

I imagine that these gaffes are less likely to propel undecideds to vote for Obama and more likely to persuade Obama-leaning persons who weren't going to actually vote to vote. But even then, my guess is that the effect is practically negligible.

How Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Helped Leak the Secret Romney Fund-raiser Video

The damning video of Mitt Romney telling a room of wealthy donors how he really feels about the freeloading 47 percent of Americans "who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it," among other candid things, has been floating around online in bits and pieces for three months, but didn't hit the big time until it was published by David Corn at Mother Jones today. Credited as a "research assistant" on the story is James Carter IV, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, who has been toiling online as an opposition researcher and is "currently looking for work," according to his Twitter bio. "I've been searching for clips on Republicans for a long time, almost every day," said Carter this evening. "I just do it for fun." But by connecting Corn with the mysterious uploader of the clip, Carter has uncovered his biggest story yet, one that could potentially affect the outcome of the election. (And get him a job.)

*chuckles*

So was the video recorded by a server? It looks like the camera is on an empty table or server's table.
There's no one else it could've been.

The rich often treat the poor as invisible. In some cases, this is to the latter's advantage.

Is this really derailing into a discussion of morals regarding third world capitalist exploitation? It is wrong to drive rural communities into ruin by tempting the youth to run to the cities and factories for a wage living.

The labor shifts to the city, leaving subsistence farming to fail, and subsequently creating a system of dependency upon which the capitalists know they can abuse the system through long hours and poor salaries.

The unnatural rapid progression from agricultural to export-based industrial is unhealthy for the entire planet outside of the few who obscenely profit from the violent imbalance of power.

How can anyone defend this?

A big part of the problem is the gross assumption in our culture that globalization is some kind of natural order. That America subsidizing agriculture to flush out foreign farmers into industry is just "part of the process". That the policies of the World Bank, IMF, WTO and many so called free-trade agreements are "inevitabilities" without any political dimension, and that protectionism is the great evil (despite the fact that the 1st world was built entirely upon it). In truth globalization is a highly political reality, much of it undemocratic to the core. Markets are not free, they're arranged, they have rules that are agreed upon. A free market is an oxymoron. Every wage, at root, is politically determined. If we acknowledge the political substrate of globalization, than we have to confront the possibility of real change and empowerment. Deep threats to status quo.

the idea that a person would not have one job, but have two jobs or three jobs and work all the light hours that are there and still not be entitled to the basic protection of fundamental care is so outrageous

I don't see how anyone could possibly hold any ill will towards Bob Dole. He gave us the best boner medicine commercials
He was an okay guy. He just had no chance of winning and everyone knew it. Which is puzzling why anyone thinks Mitt Romney has a chance. He's been doomed from go.

A lot of my conservative family members really can't grasp what it means to not have health-care through your employer. My parents are both self-employed and its always been a very important issue for them politically.

"There's a poll from NY times that actuall shows support

now remember these polls dont ever matter

they show more support for me"

"We have great hispanic leaders in the party and they'll help pick up the hispanic vote"

Guy is delusional.

asked "why don't you stand up for yourself and defend your wealth/success?"

*sidestep, I talk about acheiving american dream, I'm getting attacked!, the debates!, obama ads*

Jesus fuck, the question he answered that was initially leaked was:

With two months, how do you convince them that they have to take care of themselves?

Poor Mittens. He can't even say stupid shit in private among friends.
The problem is that they honestly do not see their views and opinions as stupid/crazy. They believe their views and opinions will fundamentally help this country!

Heck... I was arguing with someone on GAF a few weeks ago who believed police and firefighters shouldn't exist! And the only protection they need is a self-owned gun!

Any additional highlights from the complete video?

I haven't watched the whole thing myself, but one of the stories making the rounds today is how he later goes on to pretty much say that the Palestinians have absolutely no interest in peace, and something about our job being to just keep kicking the can down the road.

Interesting Yahoo poll, 48% said they are now more likely to vote for him. About 25% each for negligible effect and less likely to vote. Obviously far from scientific, but hopefully this doesn't somehow end up helping. Obama had a horrible fuckup like this four years ago and don't think it hurt him.

Not scientific at all and Yahoo is full of right-wings posting in comments and voting on everything.

Obama's gaffe definitely hurt him pretty substanially in the primaries.

It's no wonder Republicans can raise so much money. These people are just as stupid as the people who vote for Republicans.

Guy's recommendation to Romney after he wins : Clean house, get rid of all the cronnism and old washington.

-_-

Aren't these two groups one in the same?

1998 audio excerpt of Obama saying he believes in redistribution

So we're going back several decades to prove a point? In 1994 Romney also said, "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it, and I sustain and support that law, and the right of a woman to make that choice, and my personal beliefs, like the personal beliefs of other people, should not be brought into a political campaign."

The difference is that nobody gives a shit about that, since everyone knows Romney has no actual positions on anything other than wanting to be President.

I think the biggest effect of the video's reintroduction will be that a lot of people will be shocked to find out how many people don't pay income taxes and will identify with the income tax-paying group even if they're retired (paid income tax in the past), only pay payroll taxes (it all looks the same when it comes out of your check), or live in a household where only one person of two or more pays taxes (e.g., their spouse pays taxes, so they think of themselves as paying taxes). Taxpayers vs non-taxpayers is certainly a better proposition for Romney than say, the 99% vs the 1%.

My biggest problem with his response is that he blames people instead of a system loaded with perverse incentives.
