The BIGGEST meltdowns over game announcements?

Hahhaha.

Given how that Wii Remote ended up selling millions upon millions upon millions of systems, dominating the entire generation, and forcing Sony and Microsoft to play a desperate game of catch up for half a decade - the initial responses are completely fucking hilarious!

Yeah, that never happened. I seem to recall the past two years of shit and wallowing around last in sales.

Anything related to Killzone 2. It didn't matter what it was about. That thread was going to be trash. From reveal to reviews.

This isn't the thread for this, but hasn't the Wii sold just-shy of thirty-million more units than either MS or Sony, worldwide, across the entirety of the generation?

Calling figures like that "dominating the generation", is inaccurate how exactly?

Will repeat with The Last Guardian. The amount of expectations around the game are now impossible to match and the backslash will be violent.

They did. If people say that they didn't, they're still just smarting. It won. It won, and maybe deservedly so. Risks should be rewarded.

Bayonetta 2 was the biggest meltdown I've seen since I became a member. When I was just lurking the FFXIII and Epic Mickey threads were pretty bad.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 going PSP

Theres...an otherwise?...

O_o

Third party support.

You said the entire generation. The generation is still going.

So you've reached the acceptance stage? Haha

I think the DQIX thread is my favorite of these.
That depends on what acceptance means. Have I accepted that DmC actually exists and is coming out aka not being canceled? Yea I accepted that. Have I accepted the direction that the series is going with DmC? Have to play the game before I decide.

In terms of infamy, my biggest memory is all the port beggars for Epic Mickey getting wiped out. Thread was a blood bath.

Second biggest is FFXIII on 360. Before the announcement, anyone on GAF who said they believed it was going to be announced got banned, and then after the announcement Bish said they were staying banned anyway. GAF mods were much crueler back then.

I fucking love GAF meltdowns, so far all the big ones have been in games I'm not interested in so I just sit back and watch the carnage.

The bigger ones I can remember:

FFXIII announced as multi-platform (also on 360), by SE

Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 0 and a remake of Resident Evil, as well as the Capcom 5, exclusive on Nintendo GameCube. Eventually, Resident Evil 4 made its way to PS2, and there was a small flare up with fans and a bigger flare up, causing Shinji Mikami to quit Capcom.

Silicon Knights and Factor 5 abandoning Nintendo

Bioware and DICE being gobbled by EA

Monster Hunter (and Resident Evil handheld) shifting toward 3DS and Wii(U), away from Playstation brand

Bayonetta 2 appearing exclusive on WiiU

Nintendo selling RARE, MS acquisition of RARE

Epic developing on iOS (Infinity Blade was originally a Kinect game idea)

Bungie leaving MS

- some minor things:

3DS 250$ pricing and value vs Vita, 3DS screen scratches, Lost Odyssey and other JRPG's only on 360, Vita flopping everywhere, iOS/Android vs portable gaming....

Lots of things.

The most funny thing is lots of meltdown happened for last few years were how Sony platform lost its exclusive series time by time.

Add DMC 4 for 360 announcement. It was the first shot.

Wow the first page of the Devil May Cry 4 thread is pretty foreshadowing.

I think the biggest was DQ9, or FF13 on 360.

The wink that set the world on fire. On was on GameFAQs back in the day...lord have mercy...

Wonder why this was only mentioned once so far. I wasn't there when it happened but it must have been major.

Another meltdown I would have loved to see is Zelda on CDi, before it was obvious the games are crap.

The Wind Waker was great. I remember being pleased with the art direction even when it was first announced.
Same here. It was one of those moments where I realized how much Nintendo actually cared about gaming.

"Dominated the entire generation" is incredibly inaccurate. Definitely dominated a lot longer than it's been failing, though, but for the past two years it's only been dominating Ebay/Craigslist Uses Game sales. It's fair to say that in console sales overall it won the generation easily, but it most surely didn't dominate the entire generation. Not even remotely.

I remember there being some meltdowns when Final Fantasy games started coming back to Nintendo consoles. I guess Square fans at the time forgot where the games had started.

FFXIII to 360 is the biggest, and probably will be for a long time. That thread was the most fun shit ever on GAF.

I think we all forgot the biggest one...

Sega going 3rd party/Death of the DC.

Also, MGS2 on XBOX was big too.

Funnily enough, I took it as good news at the time, since my logic was:

Sega making games for all three consoles = MORE GAMES = more for me.

Sadly I did not account for Sega losing it so badly. If I had known then what I know now I probably would have been more depressed.

People freaked out about Wind Waker? I loved the look of that game. The clean, cartoony graphics almost make you forget that the game isn't on an HD console.

I had no idea DQIX was so controversial. I'd have thought the move to DS would be popular, as it was such a universally loved system.

I was on gaf when the FFXIII one happened. The thread moved like 5 pages with each refresh, it was amazing.

There have been other big ones
I was even banned during the great Epic Mickey purge

But FFXIII was on a whole other level.

It's funny to think what things would have caused meltdowns today. For example Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Wipeout all going to other systems seems like it would've caused quite a few meltdowns had it happened today.

I imagine something similar happening to Jak, Resistance or Sly.

I somehow feel that you are exaggerating a bit.

No shit?

I think that was obvious hyperbole, but there were enough threads being made that you couldn't try to have any legitimate conversation. The entire forum was shut down because the mods/admins didn't know what to do.

I've never seen backlash anywhere near as bad as the unveiling of Wind Waker.

This thread and links in it are pure gold. My stomach hurts from all the laughing. Thanks GAF!
Can't wait for another megaton meltdown. Hahaha.

Wait, why did people have meltdowns over Epic Mickey?

Everyone saw the concept art, of steampunk Disney with a dark twist and thought "holy fuck this is gonna look amazing", and then that GI cover looked like some kind of abstract David Lynch Disney nightmare

then the actual screenshots came out and it was just another cute little Wii game

Context. The Wii has floundered lately, not the Wiimote. The failings of the past two years are directly related to the lack of third party support and underpowered console, not at all related to the controller.
