Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

It's obvious that MS just rushed the initial announcement because they wanted to get attention before the ipad 3. Or whatever was bigger news around that time, I can't even remember any more. Or was it the nexus 7? It was something.

I mean they didn't even let people use the thing. I bet they have a conference before launch with all the details.

nexus 7 announcement was the week after. so yeah, it was to get their news out before that and I bet they felt it would have been leaked if they kept the surface secret any longer.

I have a feeling if they do make a model next year they won't announce it till a week beforehand like apple does.

I dunno , MS seems to be keeping announcements to what every 2-3 weeks. They want to keep their names in the news cycle. So i dunno if it was to beat everyone to it or just to start their cycle of news

I wonder what good does that do anyway.

One of the good things apple does is announcing features, price and release date together.

Few of the competitors get it.

With tablets like the Nook HD+ starting at $269-299.. would it be suicide for the Surface RT to not have some kind of comparative price point?

I'm currently in the market for a tablet, and the Surface RT is at the top of my list. But seeing other hi-res 9" displays hitting low price points is starting to get tempting. If Surface RT is like $500 .. they're fucked out of my money.

I think they won't want your money. you don't want to be seen as a 'shitty tablet' like all the other shitty tablets.

price will be announced on the 25th of october. Not sure why you would need to know it sooner, we know roughly what it will be.

really?

because based on pricing, they may want to go with an Apple or Android-based device instead. Knowing *now* means less of their time wasted waiting. They can be enjoying a new tablet of some kind (or feeling good about waiting for the RT) now rather than later.

duh.

well we already know its going to be around $500 and about $1000 for the intel version. I think that is enough information to decide.

I think it was good that they announced it the way they did. Otherwise, the information would have slowly trickled and leaked out, leading to a much less enthusiastic announcement, more confusion, and ultimately unmet expectations from the buildup and false rumors that would attach themselves to specific leaks.

We got a clean early announcement and I really liked that.

seems like the hardware costs for the Surface (Windows RT version) are allegedly around $300-400 but the same unnamed sources mention a shelf price of less than $399. As far as the Pro version is concerned, the x86 flavor’s hardware costs are rumored to be around $400-$500 and the end-price should be $100-$200 higher than the RT variant, coming in at about $500-$700

$700 for the x86 verison would put it below my estimates of $800-$1,000 ( $1,000 being a 128 gig verison with more memory and the fastest clock speeds)

I love my nook simple touch glow but the simple fact is the nook hd+ is not in the league of an ipad or windows rt tablet.

The kindle range , the nook range they are niche and from what i've read of the kindle hd are not good at for alot of tasks and my personal experiance with the nook tablet paints the same picture.

Um, they aren't niche. They allow users to browse the web, buy books, videos, music, and play games. 'Niche' devices are the Asus Transformers, Galaxy Note 10.1, Fujitsu convertible etc. By comparison The Kindlles and Nooks are positively mainstream.

well anything not the ipad is a niche tablet

$700 for the i5 version? I call bullshit. MS didn't even charge at-cost price for the Kinect.

MS didn't need to charge the at cost price for the kinect and if the i5 verison only costs $500 to produce $700 wouldn't be the at cost price either . THat would leave a $200-$300 profit according to what that website claims.

there are other costs associated with bringing hardware to market other than the manufacturing cost.

Not only do I call bullshit on the retail price, I also call bullshit on the $500 manufacture cost.

Sell em at cost to get more people in the Windows 8 ecosystem, collect the profits from the Windows 8 apps.

We should have an argument over what "some" means
It's like when you offer a friend "some" of your ice cream. They aren't getting the whole thing, just some. So $1,500 will only buy you part of a Surface. My theory is you'll be able to buy a Surface without the charging cable for $1,500.

What do you take issue with ?

Whats the diffrence in the surface RT and the nexus 7 or kindle hd ? The larger screen ? But its also lower ppi so should be the same price or cheaper. The rest of the guts isn't diffrent then any tegra 3 tablet , just a bit more ram and more storage space.

Whats the hold up on the surface Pro ? The most expensive part imo is the cpu . But ram is dirt cheap 4 gigs costs about $20 bucks at retail so MS can get it cheaper. A 64 gig ssd at retail is going for $30-$40 so ms will pay less for that. The screen is a 1080p 10.1 inch screen its a lower ppi than the ipad's screen and some of the andriod tablet screens like the new asus one have higher ppi. So it would come down to how much the stylus support adds and how much the other hardware thats in it costs. I think $500 BOM is reasonable on the surface pro. We have laptops with similar hardware going for prices not much higher than that.

i5 and the intel motherboard. You are welcomed to dig around and find out how much the wholesale price is. Also, 10" IPS screen, they are not cheap.

well a ISP high res 9.6 inch screen and digitilzer costs roughly $127.

The list prices of the i5 and intel motherboard wont be the same prices as those listed by intel in press releases.

$830

i5 -3317u tray price according to intel $225 which is for orders of 1 thousand chips. Ms will be buying alot more than 1 thousand of the chips at a time.

4gigs of ddr 3
500 gig drive
32gig ssd
14 inch 1366x768 screen

Remember this is 4 months before the surface pro launches and I'm sure HP is making a profit on these .

MS doesn't need to make a profit as they can recoup costs through their new store , video , music and whatever else they sell

I came to say that it was impossible for this to be true, because it would downright slaughter the Atom tablets...

Then I realized the surface Pro doesn't come out until early next year, probably using the same hardware ivy bridge tablets are going to have this october, and that it's likely Ms won't announce the Surface Pro details and price until it's closer to availability... So i can actually see this happening, if W8 tablets considerably drop their prices after the end of the year...

So do you expect the prices for Surface AND Surface PRO will be announced at that surface event just before launch? If it turns out that Pro is indeed only ~ $800 than I need to hold of buying an Atom Tablet at 750.

I'm thinking they will only announce the RT version at october, and only give the Pro price and details next year, prior to launch...

They seem to be following Apple's "here's the new thing, go buy it" mantra...

I'm regretting getting my android Thinkpad. Hopefully I can sell it to put some money towards a Surface Pro for school work and not be confined to another terrible mobile OS. Would be nice to see a Haswell release of the Pro next year that I can trade up for, should bring a huge increase in battery life and allow for higher clockspeeds with the lower TDP

Preparing for Surface RT or other RT tablets, returned my Galaxy Note 10.1 today for store credit at Best Buy. Android tablets are so boring, ipads ate too limiting. Need something exciting, hopefully Win RT will do.

really wonder what the tablet scene is gonna look like in 2 years. I really think the surface is a crap load better than the tablets we have currently. A complete operating system that can basically just be a laptop is such a great idea.

would love it if there was a docking station for the surface. it could pretty much replace laptops at corporate (in a few years once everybody is used to win8)

I hope we can eventually get x86 tablets that cost less than $500. My worry is that it will be like ultrabooks where the prices on new models never seem to drop.

First pictures of the holiday stores.

Although Microsoft has been opening quite a few full-fledged retail Stores over the past few months, the last time we counted there are still less than 30 nationwide. Microsoft’s solution for this, albeit temporary, is to open mini “Holiday Stores” in malls and shops across the country.
While we don’t know the range for these little popups meaning if some will be big and some tiny, we do know they will look quite nice. Case in point are these two photos from the Galleria mall in St. Louis, where we can see two Microsoft kiosks being prepped for the 26th.

The Surface RT tablet appears to be the sole focus
Although this is a far cry from a proper Microsoft Store, we can see these being very effective for pushing that new Surface RT tablet, which looks to be the main focus of this one setup. We don't know if these are the only kiosks being setup or maybe if this is just a front for something larger within the mall, but it's a start.

MS stores are jokes. They don't even have one in NYC. I checked the microsoftstore.com, they plan to have a prop up store (its more like a kiosh) during holiday.

Why don't they just let Best Buy paddle the tablet for them? Somebody bother to justify this?

Probably so the OEMs are less angry at them
