Gotta be PC, this is the internet.
I hope so, gay slurs don't annoy me but that word is pretty ugly and you can feel the aggressiveness in it.
Of course, but realistically the majority of these people with Twitter accounts are over 12, and have begun to understand the implications of language and how it relates to context and one's outward appearance.
Why?@Homophobes is a better representation of homophobia on Twitter. The things they retweet are incredibly offensive. People talking about killing or kicking out their kids if they were gay, etc.
I realize NoHomophobes is targeting "casual homophobia" but I think it's a little ridiculous.
It's not that the people using those words are necessarily homophobic, it's that they are using language that is inherently and historically homophobic.Sure, but I don't automatically assume someone using gay to mean something completely unrelated to homosexuality is necessarily homophobic. Words develop alternative meanings and people's intentions are not black and white.
In context...I'm sitting alone in my room. I'm coming off of a 2-hour play session and I'm about to save when the power cuts out.
Me (to myself): "Gay."
I'll use retarded just about anywhere, though, I guess.

What's wrong with no homo?

I don't even understand how can "Gay" means "Lame" in english.
Like, what was the guy who came up with this thinking ?
Because many of the tweets that show up on their homepage / get counted aren't homophobic, IMO.
Well you can say whatever you like to yourself, or no-one.I dunno, I went through school with the most annoying kids abusing that word (and generally being really homophobic) every other sentence, and I just feel like the worst person when I bust that word out- even if it were in a context like yours.
Yeah, you're right, it's not homophobic. The site is dumb for that reason. But using "gay" as "bad" is still dumb too. I guess I just feel that you could use any other word? Crap's a good word! People always use crap! Have done for years! No need to stop now.
The word gay has had a sexual meaning since at least the nineteenth century (and probably before) -- in Victorian England, female and male prostitutes were called "gay" (because they dressed gaily). Eventually, "gay boys" (renters) became used as a term for any male homosexual.
The term can be used inclusively or exclusively. The inclusive meaning refers to both men and women who prefer sexual or romantic relationships with their own sex.
The exclusive meaning refers only to men who prefer sexual or romantic relationships with other men. Whether bisexuals are included in either of those meanings is a matter of debate
It has been claimed that "gay" was derived as an acronym for "Good As You," but this is a folk etymology.
An interesting bit, the word 'sucks' as in 'this sucks', originated in the 1970's in the derogatory phrase 'disco sucks', aimed as a homophobic pun at the largely homosexual disco scene.
It was the most common word for 'stupid' in my school. Even the legitimately gay crowd themselves used it that way. When you hear it for 6 years straight, I can be sympathetic to someone who uses it that way.
The F word word however, should be off limits, regardless of intent. I get only negative emotions from that one. Its use instantly kills the funny for me.

It takes a pretty specific context and most likely an impeccable sense of irony to disguise calling people "faggot" as not homophobic. Not everybody is as clever as, I dunno, Louis CK.
lol what a faggy site
Seeya.

gaybob
"Faggot" I understand, although I think it's possible that a non-homophobic tweet would be counted.
"No homo" I just don't really understand. All of the words can be taken out of context and added to their counter. @Homophobes hand picks their tweets.
I mean, I'm all for squashing homophobia but I don't like the implementation of an automatic counter.
Homophobic language isn’t always meant to be hurtful,
but how often do we use it without thinking?
Its used ironically as if to imply that you are in fact having homosexual thoughtsI always found "no homo" not offensive but the height of insecurity. Like "oh god, I can't let them think I'm GAY because I said he has a cool hat!".
I don't even get the term "Casual homophobe". "Oh I'm just sometimes scared of gay people"
As in unknowing homophobia. You've never heard of casual racism, casual sexism, or casual-anything-dumb before?

From Wikipedia: Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).I don't even get the term "Casual homophobe". "Oh I'm just sometimes scared of gay people"

It doesn't mean being scared of homosexuals.

It if it were that simple, any random word would work. No Donuts. No Spatula. No YouGetThePoint. If I were to take a guess I'd say the term "No homo" comes from the immaturity of children.
Sure, but "being scared of gays" doesn't capture the larger meaning of the term.I'm pretty sure you could count being scared as a negative feeling. Besides, if you have a phobia of something, aren't you usually scared of that something?
Again: this isn't necessarily about people being a homophobe. Just like when people make racist jokes, it doesn't mean that they are a racist. It means that their words/actions in that case are racist. I've already made this point in this thread.Yes I know, but you either have negative attitudes or you don't. You don't sometimes have them.
Its kind of strange how the meaning of words change. Gay men adopted gay as their description word in the 50s or so because it was less robotic and clinical than Homosexual. Prior to that Gay was used to describe prostitutes and the men who slept with them and even further back it meant happy etc.
Beats me.
Similarly, the other day I said "You know this is some really good fried chicken. No negro." Some uptight lady gave me a dirty look.

It's a term that's based in homophobia.
