@Homophobes is a better representation of homophobia on Twitter. The things they retweet are incredibly offensive. People talking about killing or kicking out their kids if they were gay, etc.

I realize NoHomophobes is targeting "casual homophobia" but I think it's a little ridiculous.

I hope so, gay slurs don't annoy me but that word is pretty ugly and you can feel the aggressiveness in it.

Yeah, whenever I hear "faggot" I immediately negatively judge the person using the word. Mega64 still uses the word sometimes and I watch their podcast, and I still cringe when they use it. They've explained how they don't use it as a slur against gay people or whatever, but it's such an ugly word, IMO.

Of course, but realistically the majority of these people with Twitter accounts are over 12, and have begun to understand the implications of language and how it relates to context and one's outward appearance.

Sure, but I don't automatically assume someone using gay to mean something completely unrelated to homosexuality is necessarily homophobic. Words develop alternative meanings and people's intentions are not black and white.

Why?

It's not that the people using those words are necessarily homophobic, it's that they are using language that is inherently and historically homophobic.

In context...I'm sitting alone in my room. I'm coming off of a 2-hour play session and I'm about to save when the power cuts out.

Me (to myself): "Gay."

I'll use retarded just about anywhere, though, I guess.

Well you can say whatever you like to yourself, or no-one. :P I dunno, I went through school with the most annoying kids abusing that word (and generally being really homophobic) every other sentence, and I just feel like the worst person when I bust that word out- even if it were in a context like yours.

Yeah, you're right, it's not homophobic. The site is dumb for that reason. But using "gay" as "bad" is still dumb too. I guess I just feel that you could use any other word? Crap's a good word! People always use crap! Have done for years! No need to stop now.

I just shake my head whenever people still use "no homo", just the whole notion of someone having to use it in regular conversation is so ridiculous. I just find it really immature and luckily people I've seen use it age out of it eventually.

I don't even understand how can "Gay" means "Lame" in english.
Like, what was the guy who came up with this thinking ?

Because many of the tweets that show up on their homepage / get counted aren't homophobic, IMO.

It takes a pretty specific context and most likely an impeccable sense of irony to disguise calling people "faggot" as not homophobic. Not everybody is as clever as, I dunno, Louis CK.

It was the most common word for 'stupid' in my school. Even the legitimately gay crowd themselves used it that way. When you hear it for 6 years straight, I can be sympathetic to someone who uses it that way.

The F word word however, should be off limits, regardless of intent. I get only negative emotions from that one. Its use instantly kills the funny for me.

Google to rescue!

The word gay has had a sexual meaning since at least the nineteenth century (and probably before) -- in Victorian England, female and male prostitutes were called "gay" (because they dressed gaily). Eventually, "gay boys" (renters) became used as a term for any male homosexual.

The term can be used inclusively or exclusively. The inclusive meaning refers to both men and women who prefer sexual or romantic relationships with their own sex.
The exclusive meaning refers only to men who prefer sexual or romantic relationships with other men. Whether bisexuals are included in either of those meanings is a matter of debate
It has been claimed that "gay" was derived as an acronym for "Good As You," but this is a folk etymology.

Insted of asking people to stop using the word gay incorrectly, can us gays just adopt a new term. Something cool preferably

...and 80% of the tweets were probably ironic. another 10% probably under 20 years old.

I will say though, when I hear a person call something "retarded" or "Gay" IRL, there is no quicker clue to me that this person is probably sort of shitty and dumb. There are some dudes out there who have not gotten some decent gigs from me simply because of that shit.

So even if you think it's "too PC" or whatever, maybe just consider that times have changed and you don't wanna be at a disadvantage. It's not like you are gaining anything by using it.

An interesting bit, the word 'sucks' as in 'this sucks', originated in the 1970's in the derogatory phrase 'disco sucks', aimed as a homophobic pun at the largely homosexual disco scene.

It was for me too, but I moved on from using it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to call people out for using "gay" like that, but I won't exactly be impressed...

As for "fag", I've literally walked out of conversations because people drop that bomb. Fuck that garbage.

I think it's obvious to everyone it comes from "sucks dick" whether it's homophobic, related to disco or whatever. The difference is context. Fe people find "sucks" offensive, therefore it is not.

I don't know how the word "Lame" aka to not be able to walk became to mean "unsatisfactory" either.

IMHO Words only matter according to the people you are talking with. If you are talking to a another person who doesn't mind you using the N word then why shouldn't you use it? Same with every other word.

"Faggot" I understand, although I think it's possible that a non-homophobic tweet would be counted.

"No homo" I just don't really understand. All of the words can be taken out of context and added to their counter. @Homophobes hand picks their tweets.

I mean, I'm all for squashing homophobia but I don't like the implementation of an automatic counter.

I find it interesting that gay used to mean something positive but after homosexuals adopted the word, it is now used negatively, makes you think, either way, I dont' really care, casual homophobia is somewhat annoying but I ignore it

lol what a faggy site

ban me

I agree - it's undeniably dumb.

I get what you mean, but the site itself even acknowledges that homophobic words aren't used in homophobic context 100% of the time. It's simply a counter that points out how many people don't think twice about saying "faggot", "so gay", etc.

Homophobic language isn’t always meant to be hurtful,
but how often do we use it without thinking?

Sometimes unintentionally offensive things can still hurt folks.

I used to say, "No hetero" awhile ago and it was an inside joke amongst my friends.

"Dude, you look beautiful. No hetero."

"Sheeeiiiit."

I always found "no homo" not offensive but the height of insecurity. Like "oh god, I can't let them think I'm GAY because I said he has a cool hat!".
Its used ironically as if to imply that you are in fact having homosexual thoughts

Its kind of strange how the meaning of words change. Gay men adopted gay as their description word in the 50s or so because it was less robotic and clinical than Homosexual. Prior to that Gay was used to describe prostitutes and the men who slept with them and even further back it meant happy etc.

I don't even get the term "Casual homophobe". "Oh I'm just sometimes scared of gay people"

From my understanding... after reading this thread, it is someone who uses said terms in a casual, often jokingly manner without considering the gravity of said terms. I guess that implies they resent gay/lesbian culture and therefore are 'sort of' homophobic but only a little.

From Wikipedia: Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

It doesn't mean being scared of homosexuals.

I'm pretty sure you could count being scared as a negative feeling. Besides, if you have a phobia of something, aren't you usually scared of that something?

Yes I know, but you either have negative attitudes or you don't. You don't sometimes have them.

If I were to take a guess I'd say the term "No homo" comes from the immaturity of children.
It if it were that simple, any random word would work. No Donuts. No Spatula. No YouGetThePoint.

It's a term that's based in homophobia.

I'm pretty sure you could count being scared as a negative feeling. Besides, if you have a phobia of something, aren't you usually scared of that something?
Sure, but "being scared of gays" doesn't capture the larger meaning of the term.

Yes I know, but you either have negative attitudes or you don't. You don't sometimes have them.
Again: this isn't necessarily about people being a homophobe. Just like when people make racist jokes, it doesn't mean that they are a racist. It means that their words/actions in that case are racist. I've already made this point in this thread.

So what you're telling me is, that homosexuals stole that word... I'm taking it back!

Beats me.

Similarly, the other day I said "You know this is some really good fried chicken. No negro." Some uptight lady gave me a dirty look.

hahah! You know, this is some off the chain mac-n-cheese. I'm not black or nothin, but really I think I know good cheddar when I taste it.

There are still a ton of people in the world who call things gay and call people faggots, yet have absolutely no anti-gay feelings. Not defending them because it is ignorant on some level. I recently blew someone up for constantly calling stuff gay, and then said, "Whoa, sorry. I really have nothing against gay people. I've just been saying it since I was in middle school."

It's an odd thing. Like someone said earlier, it's just part of the vernacular. It's like an old generation where the word "nigger" was acceptable even if you had no anti-black feelings. My grandparents had friends that casually used the word "nigger" but were not racists at all.

Hopefully after the next two generations of people, the word "faggot" and calling things gay can finally start to be fazed out.

I don't know if that example is a good fit. When I was in middle school, if someone didn't say "No Homo" everyone would immediately take the opportunity to jump on them.
