Is GAF too strict?

It would be nice to see a bit of a crackdown over all the "VITA IS DEAD/WII U ISN'T A NEXT GEN SYSTEM" bandwagoners, but only for the ones that mindlessly parrot it rather than being clever/sarcastic about it or have actual reasonings behind their opinions beside fanboy drivel.

Video games aren't really a sensitive issue to rational people (who aren't members of the industry, of course), so they don't deserve quite as big of a reckoning.

Most people on the gaming side are far from rational, however.

I doubt any of these bans are permanent other than the ones who were juniors.

Permanent bans are very unusual unless people have long-term records of the same sort of bad behaviour, are juniors, or are doing something spectacular (account suicide / nsfw spam). I'm not going to say they don't happen, but I'm saying they rarely happen in threads like this that are mainly about tons of low-level infractions.

Didn't bish himself use the term 'vacation' to describe what he was going to do in there?

I'm sure there might be a few permabans, but I'd say that the majority are short term ones aimed at sending out a clear message of what's acceptable in threads like that.

Also glad to see that the Egypt thread was left as is, because I always believed that the OP's comments were born more out of ignorance/putting points across poorly than deep seated bigotry.

Are bans for juniors always perma? Or is it just a higher percentage than full member bans?

Gotta go lite a candle and put on some Grimes for Lush.

Goodnight all.

But some of them are humorous about their irrationality.

If they're amusing or put thought behind their arguments over the sensitive issues of video games, they can stay. But if they just vomit unfunny drivel all over constructive (for video games) discussions, they should go.

Blink two times if the bans are over.

I do think that making the argument against uploading creep photos while simultaneously spreading creep photos to a wider audience was pretty facepalm worthy. Especially considering the what, 3 times you did it? Probably not bannable though.
Some people keep saying this, and I keep joking a bit about why I posted the pics, but let me be serious for a second and try to justify myself before getting called a white knight again.

There is NO FUCKING WAY the topic would've been taken with a grain of seriousness if there weren't actual pictures with actual human beings to show you what this 'activity' looks like. I can practically guarantee you that had I not had pictures, an even larger amount of users would have expressed opinions in the 'affirmative' towards the idea, or at the very least made a lot more jokes about it being a good thing. Having real pics (which are easily found through links from the news source about the teacher) helped get the point across just how creepy they really were and discouraged taking the matter lightly.

That's all I have to say about that, and if I get banned for that, sobeit, but I still think it warranted to do so. Yes, even on the third time with the 'in line at the bakery' pic.

Our rule is that bans for junior members are permanent, and the vast majority are. I'd guess greater than 90%. A junior banned for a race or homophobia issue or admitting to piracy or any of the other mid-level stuff that normal members get banned for is probably getting a perm.

That being said, it's not hard and fast. I'm a creampuff, so I'm sure I've let more juniors off than others, but plenty of mods do it. Especially for really minor stuff. It also sometimes happens when a mod doesn't notice the person's user group when they're making the ban--it's not an automatic thing, we still need to manually set a ban length for a user, junior or not. I'm not going to name names, but I can think of a few posters I've personally "spared" :p

Likewise, just because someone's one post over the member threshold doesn't mean we waive that rule for them. It's contextual.

I made it somehow. I think.

Big list. More than I was expecting. I also didn't see most of the thread so yeah.

Don't worry, Losewood, everyone will have forgotten in a few weeks and we'll be nice and primed for another time bomb topic.

i would be sad if you were banned

I don't see a problem with discussing the issue. The pics were probably unnecessary through.

Did Blasty make it? I always hate to see cool juniors get swept up in something like this.
Yes. He's still alive.

It wasn't a bad thread, it's just people posted stupid shit and paid the price.

Well that was fun to watch

Exclude everyone who posted less than 5, and we get 46 total number of posters (76% ban rate)

I've never been banned and this is probably the reason (ignoring the bad math). Honestly, if you're in one of those big threads and are tempted to post more than once or twice you really should find something else to do. Its too easy to get dragged into an argument that's ultimately pointless and can only end poorly

Anytime I'm tempted to respond to something I usually just take a step back and/or type up a post and then delete it

Well isn't it pretty self-evident why people would reason that it's dead?

At least people get offended about vaguely real things on OT. On gaming side you have people getting actually upset about things related to video games.

Yeah, so? For some people video games are a passion, they're allowed to be upset about things related to them. That doesn't make them irrational. Also you do realize you're on the "Gaming Age Forum" right? Debates about video games should be expected.

It's odd to me that some people seem come here solely for the Off-Topic board.
