Is GAF too strict?

Because it's more work that the mods don't need and would add to the whining that already goes on about bans.

"He was banned for that? COME ON BISH! HAVE A HEART!"

No thanks.

But it comes with the territory, right? The mods are here to serve us, the users. They know what they signed up for.

This thread was crazy to read, but it helped my boring Monday at work pass rather quickly.

Still, crazy, crazy stuff. I'm sorry I don't have more to contribute, actually. There have been too many subject jumps in the last three pages alone, I don't even know which one to comment on.

Oh, I do have a confession, I suppose: I hate beer. I hate it with a passion. I've drank all kinds, I grew up in Milwaukee, WI, before settling here in Los Angeles, but I can't stand beer. It does nothing for me. I'll drink other alcohols, and I may be convinced to have a beer when hanging out with friends and that's all they have, but I don't like it.

EDIT: Another confession: I've also never seen Blade Runner. It's been on my list for ages, but then it got removed from Netflix, and I just haven't gotten around to renting it from somewhere else.

As far as the added workload is concerned, there could be an argument for transparency there. The Mods are here to keep this place from becoming Lord of the Flies more than to serve us I think.

But beyond that, the feedback they'd receive on bans would not be worth the transparency. Most people aren't permanently kicked out and if one is curious they can always ask the specific user why they were banned. Making it known without a shadow of a doubt as to why they were banned to everyone would only encourage public discourse about the banning process which I think Mods would like to keep to a minimum (this thread notwithstanding).

I'm pretty convinced 95% of the population that says they like beer actually just like alcohol. If beer didn't contain alcohol, you'd see a tiny fraction of people still drink it.

You can believe what you want, but I assure you that you're wrong. Yes, the alcoholic content is a factor, but it's not in itself the only reason. I like beer. It's often an acquired taste, but many people -- myself included -- actually enjoy drinking beer and trying new ones. Sure, the intoxicating effect it facilitates is a big plus, but I'll still gladly have a beer even if I know it's going to be the only one I have.

Counterpoint: non-alcoholic beer has a yearly sales volume of 500 million litres.

I'd have to disagree. I love the taste of beer. Well, not of all of them.

It's possible you might never like it, but it's also quite possible that you're drinking the wrong kinds. You might try to go to a nice restaurant (especially a brew-pub) and try to get a good beer pairing with food, see if that will help.

Beer is divided into two categories; lagers (basically everything you buy in stores and all major brands) and ales (most beers historically). The difference has to do with the temperature and type of yeast it's made with, but it also comes out in the flavours. You might try some ales, especially darker ales, to give you a different spin on beer. Guinness is probably the most famous darker ale in the world. If you've never had it, prepare for a bitter version of a loaf of bread.

You drink other drinks? Maybe try something fruitier. You can get ales infused with fruit tastes. Citrus is the most common, but not remotely the only choice. Your local beer store probably has Kronenburg 1664 and Kronenburg 1664 Blanc, which are french beers with fruity tastes to them.

I'm not really a huge beef buff or snob but I do make it a habit to try different types and I think I appreciate beer a lot more now that I've tried a wider variety instead of just drinking what my bro friends passed me at parties.

Switters: BANNED (by Figboy79)

EDIT: @stumpa: I've thought about that, and you could most certainly be right. I've tried dozens of beer, but I know I haven't tried them all, so there very well could be a beer that I may find to my liking. For now, though, I've yet to come across one. I'll look into your suggestions next time I'm buying alcohol. Thanks!

@ Rionaa: It's possible! O_O Dun Dun DuNNNNNNN

And Stump, you said that ban messages are better now than they were 5 or 6 years ago, and that anyone who gets banned usually can figure out why they were banned... I wonder what you think they were like back then because all my ban message said was "cmon son".]

When I got to the "cmon son" portion of that post....LMFAO. Just on account of being 2 words, simple yet so poignant...I'd want no other explanation if I were banned!

No doubt, there are some who would be really confused about why a ban was given, especially if the only feedback being given as to why is what polyh3dron alluded too. For a lot of these cases, it should be pretty obvious, especially if it happened to be one post that was clearly over the line, or both that and said person was a junior.

I've never participated in those, but they definitely contribute to the current tone of GAF, as well as all the IRL meetups, the people posting pics of their significant others, etc.

Perhaps this is wrong: The current "feel" I get from GAF OT overall is kind of a clash between people who operate as gaffers with a human persona, and people who treat this place like the usual anonymous internet playground.

Even speaking as a crotchety conscientious-objector on the whole RealGAF thing, I think we have pretty clearly and decisively chosen to be about the former.

This is something I've been noticing as well, but couldn't quite put it to words in the right way. It makes for some interesting social dynamics when anonymity, personas, and real life collide. Someone posted much further back about how there are many different sub groups based on interests or hobbies (AnimeGAF, NFLetc). OT is just a much bigger, more active group. Its not surprising then that something like RealGAF takes off. Just one more step in some part of a community getting to know one another...MORE.

I think it also contributes to how we relate to some, as some members have much more public persona's, or are notorious for one reason or another.

I can't forget one other thing....oh Blasty. Had you been permabanned, you would have remained the iconic martyr that this thread had built you up to be! Your name would have echoed the halls of OT GAF, a cautionary tale for all of junior-dom (except me).

Oh what lost glory....

Well, this is a bit like "would people still drink coffee without caffeine?" or "would people still drink soda without carbonation?" or "would people still eat cheetos without orange cheese food product powder?" The goodness of the thing is in the holistic totality of all its component parts!

But also, people really do just legit like beer. I have surely gotten myself into trouble more than once in a situation where I had already probably had enough but I was like "but this beer is so good!"

The only way to GAF.

I always keep one tab open that has my subscriptions, and open other threads in separate tabs. Refresh when necessary.

It's how I kept/bookmarked my tabs when I got banned...last year? Gosh, I don't even remember anymore.

Not a wise thing to say in light of recent events Aguirre :(

I'm shocked to see posts in that thread and whole threads about mail order brides and a female masturbation bar on the front page after the fiasco on Sunday. Playing with fire.

Edit: and a sex tape thread! Jeez, Gaf.

Does Aguirre really say that? I have my doubts with the kind of posts from the user...

Yeah I had my doubts too. Not in a stalker way but just by random coincidence. A few weeks back I came across her tumblr from another thread and saw that she was a female. In the next few weeks I started recognizing her username more in threads but the posts from her you wouldn't really expect from a female. Of course I'm not going to gender stereotype, but being genuinely confused I actually brought it up in another thread (I'm blanking on which one) and she simply confirmed that she was indeed female.

This Aguirre conversation is getting a little creepy, dudes, don't want to get into stalker territory there.

In fact, just to end it: I just PMed another female member here and she said yes, she is. So that pretty much confirms it and ends that derail.

PMing some outside third party about something dumb like that is much creepier. :3

I'm perfectly fine with weeding out useless posts like 'Would' or 'She's totes bombastic brehsif, I would put my penis in her vagina three times'.

"Yo, those guys are getting a little creepy, want to step in and set the record straight so it doesn't get into stalker territory?"

"lol nah dont really care just tell them I know for a fact and that'll shut em down"

Pretty much the entire convo.

I don't think this is accurate. I've told Mumei to do all sorts of things and been very disappointed in the responses I received.

Or I just ignore you.

:3

For subscriptions. Don't tell me you don't use it, Mumei?

I have auto-subs; I just look at the Subscriptions directly. I suppose I could look at User CP but I've never done so. What's better about it?

Only three times? Amateurs.

CP shows threads that have recently been posted, but Subscriptions does the same thing.
