Gotta agree with this not being a very good debate. The moderator did a terrible job of keeping focus on the topic and both of them rambled on too much.

What's key is tomorrow. Where they'll be playing what they said tonight and playing them side by side what they've said leading up to this. Romney lied his ass off tonight.

It was just a horrible debate overall do to the topics chosen.

Why does reality seem to matter so little in debates like these? It seems like the 'winner' according to many of you is who can do the better job shining a turd and fooling the ignorant masses.

MSNBC saying Romney did well but with bad facts and Obama underperformed and made problems for himself.

Seems to be the media trend?

Romney was willing to play dirty and, as a result, likely "won" this debate. Both dudes suck at debates though. Obama should stick to speeches.

ABC praising Romney. Dumb fucks. They even have the nerve to say he answered with a level of detail that wins him President.

wow maddow wont say that obama won

obama must have gotten blown out

it was too depressing to think anyone won. Terrible format, Romney skated by without having any specifics AT ALL on many things. Even his tax plan, that didn't have specifics, got LESS informative.

I don't know how you can say Romney won this debate. He was definitely more fluid with his speech, and energetic, but then again, Obama has always been a great orator and so-so when it comes to talking on the fly. Having said that, Romney literally said nothing of worth tonight. The 'details' of his arguments are non-existent, and he failed to shake the notion that he lacks conviction and/or any type of a platform.

People suggesting that fluidity and pre-canned confidence alone insured Romney's victory tonight, and that this will some how effect the election in his favor, are completely misguided. The media is going to fail to pull anything of worth from his words tonight, and that's ultimately what's most important in these debates. Romney knew that going in considering his supposed preparation of 'zingers,' ie. moments/sound bites that would be repeated constantly through out the media.

What the hell are you going to repeat from his statements? Vague comments, or lies that will likely only be mentioned alongside the fact that fact checkers have proven them complete bullshit?

Obama won this debate hands down.

Debate was about even on visuals / speaking / stance.

Obama was way ahead if you actually listened to the facts and the arguments he made, which, I admit, were certainly less filled with rhetoric than Romney's, and thus less easy to listen to.

Obama was way too soft and let Romney steal the debate. I also agree with what Fox is saying about Obama constantly smirking and looking away. Certainly didn't help him.

Romney managed to look like Obama's equal up there, and that's all he needed to do. He won the debate.

I agree with this. It's always easier for the challenger.

DOMESTIC POLICY DEBATE

TAXES

Romney

- The rich's taxes will stay the same
- Middle class tax rates will be reduced
- Some tax deductions will be eliminated (no specifics).
- Will implement growth policies (examples include opening up energy exploration - think he had a few more, just can't remember).
- The growth policies will generate extra revenue to balance budget
- Reduce, Broaden the base, and Simplify

Obama

- Reduce waste (77 military programs, 18 educaton program, medicare fraud)
- Cut a trillion dollars out of discretionary budget.
- Have to do more. 4 trillion dollar reduction plan. Review cuts on our website.
- Ask for 1 dollar revenue for ever 2.50 in cuts. Paid for by asking some to pay a little more.
- Balanced way.

ENTITLEMENTS

Social Security

Both candidates agree system is sound with "tweaks."

Medicare

Romney

- Vouchers to those who need. Idea is to give consumers
choice and increase competition. This will reduce costs/prices.
- Obama's plan will ruin health care sector as it unilaterally reduces rates
without encouraging competition.

Obama

- Reduce costs by creating high risk pools, appove more generics
etc.. I think everyone kinda knows what Obamacare is about.

BUSINESS

Romney

- reduce regulation
- make regulation that exists clearer
- lower individual tax rate as many small businesses pay this rate.

Obama

- Change tax code to help and encourage small business.
- 97% of business wont see a tax increase.

Health Care

Romney

- repeal PPACA
- actually increases costs to consumers
- PPACA cuts medicare
- creates an unelected board to determine covered treatments
- hurts employers/jerbs

Obama

- PPACA will help insure more families
- prevent medical bankruptcies
- No gov. takeover for those already insured. It ensures that insurance companies don't "jerk" you around. Lowers admin costs.
- Encourages group plans (will reduce rates).
- Model works well in Massuchusetts. Gov Romney da best!

ROLE of GOVERNMENT

Obama

- Keep Americans safe
- Gov has capacity to create opportunity (frameworks of success)
or gateways: ex. Railways, Colleges, Reasearch.
- Funds to reform education, hire math and science teachers and create a skilled workforce
- Gov can't do it all, but can make a difference

Romney

- States, not fed gov, should make own decisions to hire teachers
- Constitutional basics
- Keep up military to protect life and liberty
- Care for those who have difficulties to help with pursuit of happiness (elderly and disabled)
- Allow people to pursue dreams. Get government out of the way.
- role of government is not to pick winners and losers in business.

EDUCATION

Romney

- Fed Gov can help states and local govs to improve schools
- Fed funds should go directly to parents of disabled and low income students so they can make their own choices.
- Won't cut education funding. Will continue to grow grants for college
- Divert money from "green job" initiative (?) and reinvest into education.

Obama

- Fed gov. working with states to enact reforms.
- Romney tax cuts could reduce education budget by 20%
- Help businesses set up training programs with community colleges
- Make college affordable by cutting out middle man in student loans. Loan
money directly to students so they can save money through lower interest rates.

The reality is that this debate format isn't about facts or specific policies. Theyve become more about how candidates come across and how they speak/present themselves in front of a national TV audience. The fact checking won't reach even close to the percentage of people who watched the debate, and in this sense Romney clearly won.

That being said, such a slim "win" doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things. In the end, the most important thing for Obama was not getting KO'd or screwing up majorly, which clearly didn't happen- he was fine.

The thing that was most surprising to me is Romney seemed to change his stance on pretty much everything he's been against so far in his campaign. He "went to the middle" pretty much in one night, pretty telling, that.

Obama was looking down and away quite often while Romney was speaking. It just oozed of bad body language.
