Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

I was under the impression that the water levels were cut? Pretty exciting if they are still in the game, how do weapons like bow and arrow and hunting horn work underwater?

They're cut in 4, but remain in 3G (since it's just an expansion of 3.)

But they were cut in the PSP port right, or am I just being crazy now?

They weren't in Portable 3rd either, yeah. The the Portable series is more of a remix/its own series than an expansion of the numbered games.

Thankfully all this confusion seems to be ending. Looks like there will just be the numbered series and the G expansions from now on. No more Frontier, Portable, Unite, whatever.

I'm actually pleased underwater combat is not coming to MH4. I won't miss it.

I disagree. The Lagi fight is one of my favorite memories of the game, and the Gobul fight was pretty memorable too. Loved a lot of the animations for the monsters underwater and some of the art and mood were really nicely done.

Wish they would iterate and fix some things, like Andrex said, it should be a feature that improves over time like the rest of the game has.

After playing MH3, MH3G, MHP2ndG and MHP3rd extensively, it's quite obvious that MHP3 is developed by the same MHP2G team and MH3G is developed by the core members from MH3 team. It seems like the P team picked up the assets they want from MH3 to develop MHP3. Same is true for MH3G, the Tri team used resources from MHP3 to develop MH3G.

My problem with underwater combat is that simply isn't as fun as fighting on land. I dislike swimming after monsters especially when they retreat back into the water.I dislike how movement is sluggish and harder to dodge attacks (without a blocking weapon). I dislike how annoying Lagiacrus is with its ability to easily stun players when it passes by you. Yes, he's not much of a threat when you've got 4 players constantly assaulting his head and back, but he's the most annoying monster to fight underwater solo. Gobul can also be a pain in the ass which is why people prefer to fight him on land by fishing him out of area 4 of Flooded Forest. Personally, it's his puffed up rolling attack and lunge bite that is a pain to dodge (except when I use the lance). Speaking of weapons, the great sword is horribly slow to maneuver underwater. I get annoyed after failing to prevent a monster from retreating to its watery lair. Hell, Ceadeus is ridiculously easy to beat, but he's not that fun to fight especially when you have to follow him through multiple lengthy underwater areas.

I absolutely love Monster Hunter, but underwater combat can get the hell out. I still question how much more improved it can get. Swimming is still boring and I'd still prefer to fight on land anyway.

The Ceadeus fight emphasizes all the weaknesses of underwater combat without any of its strengths though. That's why that fight sucked so hard. Even after you've chased it from zone 1 to zone 3, it'll still move back and forth within zone 3 if you don't stagger it frequently enough.

I wonder if the subspecies fight is any better in 3G.

That's the main problem. It doesn't mean it's not fun though. It's just not as good. I'll still be sad to see it missing from 4.

According to MH wiki, the Ceadeus subspecies can have both of its horns broken off and it also has a water beam that can be swept across the area like Agnakator's.

Is the online/non-online issue of 4/3G worth waiting for 4 and not picking up 3G? How long will it take for 4 to be released?

Actually, I'll probably buy 3G anyway. Hope SP will be fun enough. Man, I want to try a demo!

Yeah. Don't remove it because some people dislike it. Make it better.

Your basic argument is that underwater fighting is too hard rather than it not being fun.
  • You dislike the gameplay aspect of chasing enemies moving from land to water, but don't have an issue with others moving from land to land.
  • You dislike the challenge of timing blocks and dodges underwater, though you don't have an issue with defensive maneuvers against fast land monsters like Barioth.
  • You dislike using a Great Sword underwater because it is a slow weapon underwater, when the Great Sword is a slow weapon to begin with compared to all weapons and is so by design.
Much of your criticism for underwater battles is actually just an extension of a common complaint from non-MH players: The game isn't fun / It's too complicated / It's too hard / I need an monster HP meter / etc...

Megaton-amonga! Multiplayer info from Cha-cha and Kayamba. Nothing new, but awesome nonetheless. (From Go Nintendo)

More videos coming soon I'd guess.

My hate for underwater combat is due to a combination of it being harder and less fun. There's simply less convenient things about it that I don't like having to deal while things like dodging and maneuvering around a monster are obviously more tricky to do underwater. Great Sword is noticeably slower used underwater, particularly when performing the the horizontal sword slash. It just feels disorienting.

I'm really excited for these. :D I'm glad the console one is hitting early into the Wii U's life too so we have it in our hands quickly. None of this waiting several years to get a meaty adventure game to 'waste' many hours on.

The character swap on 3DS ver thing is just the icing on the cake. :O

I personally disagree. After a few underwater hunts, I absolutely loved the system and mastered it a few hunts after that. Lagi fights are so much more fun when it goes underwater.

The underwater fights were fantastic for the most part. So intense. Did I grumble and worry when having to fight underwater? Yes, because they were challenging in different ways, because they always felt a bit claustrophic, because you have to think differently. These things made some of the fights really special, and the final blow sweeter. I like that the game made you sweat and struggle when having to follow some monster under the sea. The controls worked, and I had a great time on the back of monsters hacking away. Very sad to see it go in 4, and that means no more Lagi..?

Dunno what you guys mean, I had a much easier time with water quests than normal quests.
Lances!

Hell, water combat aside, most water monsters were absolutely embarrassing on land, yet they're on land so much. Gobul on land is a stationary object (if you fish him out, by the time the fight starts he's at 2/3rds of his health). So even if water combat is hard, the water monsters' land combat balances it out.

I'm excited for the surround sound mix, hoping it'll be good. Just as example, if a monster roars off screen, I'd like to hear that from the appropriate side speaker in a way that makes me jump.

You just have to adapt to underwater. If you understand the patterns of monsters then you anticipate and react beforehand. So you have to adjust a little underwater big whoop.

Gobul is still an asshole.

For those interested, Monster Hunter fr has a review of the new Monster Hunter Illustrations 2. It's a very, very nice book. It goes from MH2G (MHFU) to the game of this topic (essentially it picks up where the first book left off). Also has some monster designs that never made it in a game (such as a sand Ukanlos subspecies)

Please Udon. Share this with everyone else.

Any word on if Capcom is considering some kind of combo-pack version that includes both versions?

I believe Sven said that they were considering doing a combo pack of some sorts through the Capcom store. Something about a soft bundle? I'll see if I can hunt that down for you.

Edit: Here we go:

There won't be a hard bundle of the games, but I've been speaking with Darin about providing some sort of soft bundle purchase option within the Capcom Store. Don't hold me to it yet as we're still pushing the pencil around but we'll see what we can do.

did we ever get a confirmation for cross region play?

Capcom-Unity stated on Sept 16th that "Nintendo will be hosting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate's servers, it is unknown at this juncture." I doubt we'll get it since none of Nintendo's previous online-enabled games allowed for cross region support.

Nintendo hosting the game is a step in the right direction for them. But it truly is a shitty mystery that they haven't revealed how well they've set up or otherwise improved their online network up.

Except for Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Mario Tennis etc. etc. I think MH3 was the only region restricted online game on the Wii.
