Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

Capcom-Unity stated on Sept 16th that "Nintendo will be hosting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate's servers, it is unknown at this juncture." I doubt we'll get it since none of Nintendo's previous online-enabled games allowed for cross region support.

Is that common? I though companies hosted their own servers for games? Do Sony and MS do this frequently, or is this part of Nintendos "money hat" for the MH franchise?

For those interested, Monster Hunter fr has a review of the new Monster Hunter Illustrations 2. It's a very, very nice book. It goes from MH2G (MHFU) to the game of this topic (essentially it picks up where the first book left off). Also has some monster designs that never made it in a game (such as a sand Ukanlos subspecies)

Please Udon. Share this with everyone else.

Please

The book is pretty awesome - i've a fairly unhealthy collection of MH art books, but i found this sketch particularly hilarious

I disagree. The Lagi fight is one of my favorite memories of the game, and the Gobul fight was pretty memorable too. Loved a lot of the animations for the monsters underwater and some of the art and mood were really nicely done.

Wish they would iterate and fix some things, like Andrex said, it should be a feature that improves over time like the rest of the game has.

I wish they'd fix and expand on it. I actually enjoyed hunting underwater, however, I actually enjoyed exploring a whole lot more. Very relaxing and enjoyable.

Really hope they bring it back in future iterations only better.

I believe Sven said that they were considering doing a combo pack of some sorts through the Capcom store. Something about a soft bundle? I'll see if I can hunt that down for you.

Edit: Here we go:

Awww....that does mean that there will be no super awesome double bundle LE with both games.... :(

just think about it: a wiiu box with a 3ds game included. Or both game in some nice designed boxset.....

I think this is one of my most anticipated Wii U games. I have never played monster hunter before but after watching Tri G playthroughs on youtube I need this game. It definantly looks fun and a change of pace in gaming I need.

Since you have it do you mind a question? From what I've read it has everything from MH Tri, and a decent amount of stuff from 3G too. Does it have some armors from 3G in it?

Also I saw this on Monster Hunter fr, apparently the owner contacted Udon about the book and they told them:

Nous sommes vraiment excités par la sortie de Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, et nous réfléchissons aux moyens que nous pourrions mettre en oeuvre pour aider à célébrer le lancement, mais rien n’est encore confirmé.

Anyone good in french?

Overall they are excited with the release of Monster Hunter and they want to do something to celebrate the release but nothing had been confirmed yet.

That means free online in Japan, wonder if that'll help sales in the long run?

Capcom's Sven often mentioned how expensive it was to keep the servers going for MH Tri. By the time the servers are permanently shut down sometime before the overseas release of MH3U in March, MH Tri will be nearly 3 years old.

I'm surprised in a way that Capcom didn't go all out and take advantage of the wiiu NFC. In Japan it would've been huge and if the game/figures had the advertisement backing of Nintendo I don't think they could go wrong in the west...they really could've raked it in with unlockable monster and weapon variations, extra character customs...boggles the mind.

Oh yeah, are we likely to get any of the crazy downloadable events/equipment Japan seems to always be getting for these games? I've only ever really played Tri, and unfortunately I lost my save data before getting into the online, so I'm not really sure how that usually plays out...

sorry - missed - yes it does, has a lot of 3G armours in it. :)

Why didn't they use peer to peer? Would seem infinitely cheaper, especially for a game with only a few people playing in a game mode.

I'm a PC gamer so I understand the need for dedicated servers, but this is in the console space and supporting a niche game.

I'd love to see the figures.

It's not niche in Japan, where the main audience is.

Tri's not peer-to-peer? I thought the servers were just for matchmaking (i.e. finding a city/lobby). I mean on quests, there's definitely a host advantage for the player spotted first by the monster.

MHP3's farm is better than MH3U's farm, sadly. (A lot better, IMO.)

MH3U's farm is pretty much the same as MH3, only difference being you can also access it from online in limited fashion.

Woah, that BBQ Spit thing is real.

I heard that there's some new items you can cultivate at the farm like thunderbugs. However, those are easy enough to get by buying them from the online npc shop on special days. That is, assuming the same nps shop from MH Tri is included since Loc Lacy City is replaced with Tanjia Port.

Personally, I prefer the farm in MH3U. I find it a chore to run around the farm every time just to collect stuff in MHP3rd. The ability to access it from online in MH3U via a single NPC to harvest and collect is a blast! :)

chore?! that's all part of the fun!!!

(my wife used to kill me for -not- going and getting my farming items - usually as i run out of a critical item that i didn't notice i was running low on)

That's what I was afraid of. Coming from MHFU's pokke farm I really didn't like Moga village's farm much at all. It seemed so bland and the lack of a mine area was a big deal for me.

Here's a vid of MHP3rd HD's farm for anyone curious.

Ehh, mining and fishing and random bug catching on your farm was a bit too much 'going through the motions' without any real goal, just to get 'whatever's there. Prefer a farm where you do reap what you sow.

As far as MH Tri goes, I believe all of the quests were the same. Japan has some exclusive weapons but the overseas version of the game replaced them with new exclusive weapons instead. The weapons all look different from each other, but based on the same element and have the same stats.

Switch Axe - Japan has Pirate J, NA & Europe have the Sinister Saints
Great Sword - Japan has True Cutter, NA & Europe have the Lion's Bane
Lance - Japan has the Brainfox, NA & Europe have the Byakko
Long Sword - Japan has the Tessaiga and Lightning Works & NA & Europe have the Tenebra D and Rising Soul

There's a few different event armor pieces as well, I think they were just two jackets and maybe some pants.

Anyone know if TriU will have an updated farm? The farm in P3rd was pretty damn awesome.

iHQm9ogLtt5Zt.gif

That Mega BBQ Spit...so awesome to use.

I like P3rd's farm. One of the best things I enjoy is the little mining tunnel for your cats, and when they hit the jackpot and celebrate. One of 'em grabs a little horn and toots a tune. lol

The Yukumo Farm vid shows it.

one thing I liked about the farm in MH3/3G is it accumulates the products you grow....so you don't have to check the farm every time you finish a quest...

Correct me if I'm wrong....but I don't think the MHP one works in this way...

This is correct. Hits on the monster don't count if the host doesn't register them.

Then what exactly was expensive for them to run? Servers for what you are talking about would be very cheap to run, what exactly were they charging for?

I guess you can ask the same thing about xbox live.

That's a shame. P3rd's farm was brilliant.

Capcom charged for online MH in Japan because they can get away with it, similar to XBL fees. They can't pull the same shit in the West since the series isn't anywhere popular enough. I think overstating the expenses of running the servers is more of a PR thing - softens the blow for the eventual shutdown and generates good vibes ("look at how much we care about the community; we're paying $$$ to keep things running").

Still, I'm sure the costs of running the matchmaking servers is a non-zero amount and they really aren't getting any revenue from the community aside from selling more copies of Tri at discounted prices.

Hopefully seeing it in action will quell some of the graphics complaints.

Wonder if they'll demonstrate cross-play since both versions are there now. Might be interesting.
