Judging Vita before its first Christmas is "preposterous" - Sony

I'm 99% sure that this thread won't turn
out good but I'll post it anyway.

Sony admits that it would "love to be
further along" with sales of PlayStation Vita,
but believes that "judging [the] console
before it has had its first Christmas is
preposterous".

"But the great news is that we have got the
content in place. We have got the cash to
invest in terms of marketing and retail to
really ignite it this Christmas. To start
judging a console before it has had its first
Christmas is preposterous, really. And we
are giving it everything we have got."

To start
judging a console before it has had its first
Christmas is preposterous, really

It had its first holiday in the market where portables are the most dominant. FFS it launched in that holiday and had terrible numbers. And in the market where tablets are going to be the huge christmas buy and there's a new console launching, this is the worst time to expect some amazing christmas miracle

Weird formatting, lack of source, and this must be SCEA talking right? Its true that it hasn't had its first holiday season in the US yet but it has in Japan. What do they mean by "we got the content in place?" I assume that is referring to AC and COD?

I imagine the Vita will do okay christmas. Retailers will deliver the sales, not like much else is big this year other than Wii U.

I think the bigger story is that the Japanese no longer get a Christmas. Bummer.

lol, this.

I realize the system isn't selling well anywhere, but I think SCEA by far has done the worst job with marketing, releases, info, and the like. Sometimes I have to remember that I'm not in the same region as a lot of the people who post seemingly ridiculous things about the Vita. SCEJ is at least doing SOMETHING. It was very apparent to me when I visited the US recently and saw the Vita situation there first hand. Woof.

Just from a sales point of view, is there anything the Vita might outsell this holiday season?

At best? Maybe the Wii if Nintendo pretty much kills it off to sell Wii U

Even then Nintendo systems get most of their sales during the holiday so I don't even see that happening.

At the topic:

Every electronic/game shop I walked into didn´t have a PS Vita shelf. Its a small part of the PSP one. You have to know that it exist to find it in shops. Its mindtroubling thats everything they have.

You've seen the games coming out for the next few weeks/months right? Didn't think so

You mean you think the quote is referring to currently unknown games? The article seems to think its these titles:

Vita's success this Christmas will no doubt lie in the hands of four key titles: Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, Need For Speed: Most Wanted and FIFA 13.

And to be fair, if you haven't seen the list of Vita games coming out in the next couple of months, it is pretty damn solid looking. From a sales perspective, who can say, but they've got AC, Call of Duty, Need For Speed, Persona 4, Ragnarok Odyssey, Sony Smash Brothers, etc all hitting in a short period of time. It's a good time to be a Vita owner IMO, but that doesn't mean people are actually buying them.

sony, vita's first christmas was last year.
are you okay?

Only in Japan.

The system struggles to sell over 50k in North America each month. I doubt we'll see it moving 500k in Nov/Dec this yr because of CoD. It needs a price cut before anything will happen.

If Vita sells 250k in Nov/Dec will people consider that successful or still a failure? Or will it depend on what 3DS moves?

CoD Vita doesn't have the MP appeal of the console version. It won't be a big seller. PSABR is MP focused and likely won't sell on PS3 or Vita. The rest will vary but I wouldn't expect massive numbers from them.

250k in each would be pretty damn good imo considering how bad it's selling. 250k across both would be a disaster

He said just because they have decent games doesn't mean anyone actually cares.

Two games that will be ignored in favour of their "real" counterparts on PS3 and 360, and some ports/multiplatform games.

What a Christmas.

There are some nice titles coming for it later this year so it may do okay during the holidays. If they put out some insane bundles at a decent price I'd finally bite. I've been keeping an eye on that AC3L Bundle but may wait awhile longer to see what happens.

So was their masterplan to launch after Christmas outside of Japan, so that they could use that as an excuse if sales weren't up to snuff?

What'll be the excuse next year? Judging Vita before it's even 2 years old is "preposterous"?

Handhelds are under major attack in the West from smartphones. While there may have been room for two dedicated handhelds prior to the smartphone gaming "boom," seems pretty clear that isn't the case now. And Nintendo has Sony's only real marble from last gen (i.e. Monster Hunter). That just leaves Japan, and in Japan, it has had its first Christmas and gave great signs on just how terrible the system was going to sell by its second week on the market there.

"Preposterous" indeed.

Just from a sales point of view, is there anything the Vita might outsell this holiday season?

Absolutely. PSP, GBA, and PS2 are going down in flames this holiday in the U.S. (PSP might beat it in Japan, though.)

Right, don't judge until they've had the opportunity to spin a minor increase in sales over the next couple of months. :/

I fucking love my Vita, but c'mon.

Ehh, I'd hardly call being out one week right before Christmas is a "holiday in the market".

I cannot wait for NPD + Media Create threads in November/December/January. Fun times ahead, well, unless you're a Vita owner.

Are those new games? I haven't heard those. Hope I can tear myself away from the games I'll be playing on my Vita to play those. Are they PS3/360 or 3DS?

So Liberation isn't a REAL game? K

It's a spinoff. And it will be seen as a spinoff and treated as a spinoff. It doesn't matter how much like the mainline games it is. Nobody's going to care when the game they've been waiting for comes out on the same day.

Vita's success this Christmas will no doubt lie in the hands of four key titles:

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation / Actual reason for small hope but it has to compete with AC 3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified / Half assed port by a second class developer. BLOP2 as competitor.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted / Pretty much the Assasins situation.

FIFA 13 / Two year old game. Such a slap by EA and moneygrabbing move its actual pretty disgusting.

Anyone disagrees?
