Being mad about this MLP comic doing well is stupid. Conventional wisdom has been that comics are selling 50 and 60 thousand copies because fewer people are interested in the medium. The people in charge at Marvel and DC have an idea that you have to have a Superman or a Batman (or their Marvel equivalents) to sell 100,000 or more copies of anything anymore, if not a dumb stunt to spike interest.

Dismissing the performance of the thing as "Durr, Bronies. Hurr" is an error because this book is
1) not a superhero comic and
2) probably being bought largely by people who otherwise don't buy comics.

There is a huge problem in the direct market, and this seems to sidestep that problem. Isn't that what's really interesting about this?

This reminds me of the Bionicle (IIRC) and US manga sales numbers. Both were selling hand over fist and a big success for the comic medium in North America.

Both were ignored by Diamond Distribution acolytes in time.

Sort of how digital comic distribution is sabotaging itself by gouging customers in order to pacify the Diamond monopoly.

If comics cost $3-4 because of PAPER and PRINTING COSTS - why is a digital file still $3-4?

Because this industry is run by monkeys.

We'll see what people have to say when they establish Rocket Pony in Guardians of the Galaxy after killing the raccoon.

What a great week this was, Uncanny Avengers had a decent start and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Then I picked up Batman 13 and it was amazing. I really like the way DC are doing daring to do something new with the Joker. I also stumbled up on a great interview with Scott Syder yesterday about the latest Batman issue and the upcoming arc with the Joker. I don't know if this has been posted in the thread, but I thought I should share it for anything that might be interested in hearing the path the Batman series will take.

I have a feeling that this podcast interview got passed over and that would be a shame.

Anyone who is loving the Batman run, and specifically #13, Scott Snyder's recorded interviews are full of passion, insight, and sheer love of his characters. He is layers deeper than most writers out there now.

Do not pass this up.

Just saw the Guardians of the Galaxy cover.

What the hell?

Why is Gamora now a space marine? Why is Groot infected with glowing balls/cancer? Actually, why are those glowing balls randomly on a few of the members (but not all)? Why is Iron Man joining the team? That makes no sense.

This is making me pretty angry considering the Abnett/Lanning Cosmic books were among my favourite comics ever. Iron Man being on the GotG pretty much defeats the entire purpose and point of the GotG. Now they are just Space Avengers. That's stupid.

And don't even get me started on Sam Alexander Nova (which at least I have known has been coming).

Man...why did Loeb and Bendis have to come in and start turning Cosmic on its head. Why couldn't Abnett and Lanning just have returned to the series?

This sucks.

After reading all the complaints about Ultimatum, I read it this evening on MDCU. Wow, that was one of the worst stories I've ever read.

Shit, gonna have to give that a listen. So excited for his Supes book.

Dark Rocket Pony, by Bendis and Immonen, 2015. Calling it now.

Their Legion Lost book was tier 1. Abnett's Warhammer novels are fantastic. It's not fair to minimize their writing.

This.

Abnett's Warhammer books shouldn't be missed. I don't even play the damn game and I love them. And I'll defend his run on New Mutants--the biggest problem with that book has been the art, which has been passable at best, sketched in a hurry at the worst.

Marvel already got their ponies!

Any of space horse Thor collected in trades?

Also, on the subject of Thor, any other runs/trades to recommend? He's one of the main Marvel heroes that I've read nothing of.

DnA can't return because they won't be able to live of Giffen's ideas.

Ha.

DnA's cosmic books are so peculiar in that they seem afraid of their own writing. Every time they made a big move (basically, killed off someone) they immediately went into spending time into how bring that a character back.

Comic book deaths are never permanent (Ultimate universe marvel aside) anyways. Plus I can only really think of two characters they killed off to bring back later
(Quasar and Thanos)
. Most of the deaths did actually stick (though there really weren't many deaths in general). Deaths do not make writing good or bad though. The writing was good because the stories were fun and interesting and the characters entertaining and well, uh, characterized.

I think that comic book deaths all have the potential to be a beautifully tragic thing. To me, I enjoyed the death in avx. It had a lot of symbolism for me and dialogue aside, I didn't think it was poorly preformed. Of course it's hard to keep a character dead for numerous reasons but if the revival is handled well, that too can be great.

Let me look and see. I may still have one of the Simonson Thor trades here I don't need. . .

Edit: I'll keep looking. I don't think I ever found someone to foist it off on. It may be in my thinning boxes.

The dan jurgens john romita jr run was great, mostly because it has some of the best art of jrjrs career but there were some great stories too. Plus thor fights thanos

Ignore that if you dont have any taste i mean dont like jrjr

Tom defalco and ron frenz had a great run too

Read some Hack/Slash Omnibus 2 earlier this week and its so good. Also started catching up on Ultimate Spider-Man and made it to the first volume of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man but Peter is still Spidey. Got back into Star Wars comics as well. Knight Errant Vol 1 was alright and so was Invasions Vol 1, both have potential. Read three issues of Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison too, need more Star Wars comics like this.

You buggers made me check out Batman 13 so now I'm curious about this crossover. I didn't even know this event was happening. I assume it's going to include all the bat-books.
Stupid internet making me like things.

I loved Bionicle as a kid! Lego included those comics in their subscriptions to the Magazine and I collected that stuff like no other. Bionicle really was a stroke of genius for them in every way.

Any opinions on Love and Rockets? Went to APE and saw that their booth was the most prominent and I liked the artwork. I kind of remember seeing their books being brought up, but I don't remember where.

Well now I know why Dale Keown stopped drawing Pitt comics. Doing a Pitt commission and jesus christ so many chain links! D:

Plus just submitted some concept stuff for anthology I'll be participating in. :3

wel DnA killed nova , star lord and Thanos. and 2 of the 3 came back some how. Dont forget black bolt and vulcan and lilandra as well.

hickman bought BB back though

Hmmm.

I think I'm gonna need to read The Red Wing a few more times until I fully get what it's about. Hickman + Pitarra is such a bonerific combo.
