The Unfinished Swan Review Thread

I've little interest in analysing other people's reviews, but Eurogamer's is really odd. The reference to a mirror completely misses the point of it, for example.

TSA review was awesome Nofi !

Anyways Reviews dont matter much to me though for now since I am pretty much buying it DAY 1 also some psn games were really harshly rated like papo & yo

What is the point of the mirror in your estimation? I'm curious.

Almost sounds like a game trying to be too trendy for its own good and getting hype simply because its a Sony exclusive.

I hope there's a demo, because I almost fell for the hype with Journey but luckily the demo stopped me from jumping in there.

From where, exactly?

Never said it was a piece of shit. Just not for me. If the demo isn't representative of the game, then that's on the dev. Not me.

From where, exactly?

GAF. Various web sites. I understand the art house appeal of the visuals, but art house lends itself well to movies. Not games so much. Like I said, hopefully there's a demo because throwing paint around to reveal your path doesn't sound all that fun.

Journey felt overhyped to me in the first twenty minutes. After I'd finished it, it was one of the most memorable gaming experiences I'd had in years

Judging Journey by a short demo with no multiplayer is ridiculous

At the same time, the aim of the demo is to give you a taste of what the game is like. If the demo fails to capture your attention, you might not really be inclined to actually spend your money buying the thing just to check whether your initial impressions were right or not.

So you suggest I fork over the money and hope for the best?

There is no "hype" with Journey, only truth. It's a magnificent experience. Maybe not the most engaging game in the world, purely from a mechanical standpoint, but my Lord, I was nearly in tears by the end. A seriously, magical, transcendent experience for me.

But that's the issue with having a demo.
I think you can't create a good demo of Journey that captures what the game is about.

This is of course not a sure way to go about, but if 72 reviewers out of 73 reviews on Metacritic liked it then that should mean that there is a high probability that a random person also likes it.

Game reviewer have in the past been criticized for being too in tune with their game purchasing audience. Unlike movie reviewers.

Yes? Or do you only ever buy games with demos?

Generally yeah. This gen, the vast majority of my purchases of new IPs have come after a demo, or trying the game first in some fashion.

Why would I risk throwing money away based on Internet hype?

Made that mistake only a couple of times this gen. Once on Castlevania on XBLA.

Im guessing you've missed some of the best games this gen if that is your philosophy

SOTN and Journey? You say you "made that mistake" as if you bought bad games based on good reviews. You bought good games, but didn't really like them. That's not a purchasing mistake, that questionable taste.

I'm joking of course, if you didn't like them, that's cool. But at least just say they weren't for you, rather than pretending you were duped into buying a turkey by the corruption deep at the heart of VG journalism.

Not sure a demo would fully convey what the game is all about. From what I've read the mechanics change a lot and it's kind of a story unfolding through discovery. I guess people would get a feel of one part of the mechanics and maybe be intrigued but they are just as likely to feel it's pointless.

Really loved thesixthaxis review btw. Very clever indeed.

Its Dan Whitehead, he's ok for shooter reviews but outside of that... Hell I've still not forgiven him for giving Braid a 10 and praising its writing (!)

Awesome, I knew for those who 'get' it it would be a high scorer, day one for this

Papo & Yo was great btw
And of course, Journey was magnificent
Year of the PSN for me

So what exactly is your basis for suggesting that this game has only received hype because it's a Sony exclusive? It won the GCA's Best Downloadable game of E3, which is an award that comes from votes from over two dozen sites/mags. And only one of those is a "Playstation" mag.

Yet there are plenty of others that like those "art house" games like Journey, so maybe the problem isn't with "art house" games but with you?

And lol at the stupid console war trolling. There's been hype around this game ever since it was first shown on PC in 2008.

Hah.

1. Isn't that a store, and not a professional journalist?
2. What kind of score is that, an excellent/what?
3. Link is broken anyway.

2. Why would that possibly matter?

And the link is broken because the site has been banned.

The guy trolls playstation related games and finds conspiracy theories every time a PS game scores high without discussing the actual merits and flaws of the game. His statement belonged to n4g and not in neogaf. Dont mind it too much.
