Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Excited to pay $500 for a Surface RT with little software and 3rd party hardware support at the moment (and for who knows how long)?

So you don't think there's a market for the Surface RT? I said I would love to get it, and that's because I'm a huge gadget nerd and the hardware looks great.

I am really confused by MS's strategy in marketing this. For such a cool product it seems so odd. A week before launch not one single person in the press has had a hands on, no pricing, no preorder or solid availability information, no real info about what skus there will be. Extremely vague tv adverts.....

It reeks of vaporeware yet it's out in a week.

Intriguing, isn't it? Either there's something to hide, or Microsoft is truly inept. Each is just as likely as the other.

Red herring is red.

There's a difference between thinking there is "a market" and thinking people are going to be lining up to buy them. Yes, there is obviously a market. Don't insult my intelligence or yours. How big and how fast is the question at hand.

How fast do you think they can move 10 million $500-$600 RT units? I really have no idea, but I don't think it's going to happen in a month or two. You? Is there a buzz out there that can get 10 million RT's sold in 6 months? IDK...and this thread is full of some of the most versed people on Win8 on the planet...and here we are completely lost on next week's "launch".

that's true. the fact that you can put a tablet in a toddler's hands and it is intuitive to therm...? huge.

I was surprised my mom picked it up so fast. She still needs my dad to load it up with content, but because of the Fire she no longer needs drugs to fly across the country to see me. Now my dad loads her Fire up with movies and books and she's good.

Well, you seemed shocked that I would want one. I certainly don't think they will sell 10 million unites in a month or two. Me saying I would love to get one wasn't suggesting that I think people will be lining up in droves for them. I want one because it looks awesome. I say $500 because I know realistically that it will not be less than that.

He's shocked at the fact that you would pay so much for one; not the fact that you wanted one. I don't know if Microsoft can sell that many at $500.

Yea, I thought RT shoppers were looking for something less expensive than that.

I think you're the first I've seen actively looking to pay in that $500+tax range for an RT. I thought most were looking for a $200-$400 price range for them. But I've been out of the RT conversation/loop, because I'm only interested in the Pro. Maybe that expectation has changed. IDK.

I'm just saying that it will most likely be at least $500 because of the premium materials used, coupled with the fact that the only prices we've seen on any Windows 8 tablets thus far have been above $500. I would obviously prefer it at a cheaper price, but if it was at most $500 I would at least consider it, because, as a huge gadget nerd, I would love to get it.

there's no way it's going to be $500 (or 499.999). it will definitely be less.

The problem is, at least to my knowledge, that Microsoft is competing with Apple, a company who had great software support and is well known within the tablet industry. However, Microsoft doesn't have that great software support for W8 and is releasing their first tablet.

I'd agree that $499 is the cheapest we'll see unless Microsoft is taking a loss. Though that subscription talk could also push it into the $99-$199 range as well.

As a product, I think it is every bit as good as an iPad and if the app market grows, should be able to compete with the iPad at a that price.

Man that takes me back. I liked those ads too, but they were terrible when you put them in front of a mainstream audience (something that never happened anyway). I think this ad works far better in that sense. Its easily digested, catchy, and is a far better 'Hello' than say this.

meh, I thought it was fine for the casual audience it was intended for.

a 16 gig Galaxy Note 10.1 is $499, a 16 gig iPad is $499. $499 for a 32 gig Surface shouldn't be surprising or seem overpriced.
I'm not saying it would be overpriced or surprising. I'm just saying it won't happen. Microsoft is clearly playing to win here. I'm betting on $399.

Well, fingers crossed because I hope you're right. I guess we just wait and see, should be any day now.

What I took away from that ad:

I don't want a laptop that I have to put together.

That's being as objective as I can be, because that's how they presented it.

Would you need to if you would rather not take the cover off and just keep it on all the time?

Always thought this product demo definitely portrays how solid the connection was. Plus after having seen the ad and all those click sounds, the actual product does in fact come off as very very clicky.

They portrayed it as a laptop, not a tablet.

Yes, there were a few instances where it was sans-keyboard, bust mostly the people were interacting with it with the keyboard attached.

Looking at it from an outsider's perspective (something I've learned), it's a laptop with a touchscreen and a gimmicky keyboard you can mix and match.

Interesting that it doesn't look like they simulated the screen in the commercial. The last shot even looks like the screen has fingerprints on it. That's a nice screen if that's the case.

Just... what? I have no idea how you even came to this conclusion.

For me, its the fact I can enjoy both form factors on the fly. If I want to lay on the couch and browse the net, cool. If I want to sit at a desk and type, double cool. Its a situational laptop, and tablet. Its like I can have the cake...and eat it too.

Not quite sure what your bash is? You're saying they shouldn't market the keyboard as detachable because no one would ever want a tablet with a detachable keyboard?

I think they did not spend enough time focused in on the fact that it's a touch screen device with a really nice touch UI. Show the keyboard, sure. But don't dominate the first real commercial with it.

It lacked balance.

This is a hardware commercial not a software one. They have other ads for that.

What?

The Microsoft Surface's price is like the chalkboard in Steve Urkel's car. You write down what you want it to be and that's what it is.
