Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

People expecting competitive pricing were in for a rude awakening as soon as MS announced their AD budget of $1 Billion. If you remember Kinect which was another hilariously overpriced product the AD budget was an astonishig $500 Million. They are attempting to build up the Windows 8 Mindshare here and keep prices high to recoup the investment. At $300 these things would sell themselves and they wouldn't need such a huge marketing push.

Keep in mind Windows 8 takes about 10GBs of that storage. :-/

What!? Why would that be when the iso is only 3.2?

LOL MS go premium over iPad? love it.

I am asking now. Who, IN THIS THREAD, is going to buy one?

No not the "getting one for the misses" bullshit, or "getting one from work". Actually spending your hard earned after tax american dollar to buy a RT?

Count the name now.

Cheaper than my smartphones.

Sold.

the only thing SurfaceRT has over iPad is the Office pre-installed. Office for iOS comes out early next year right? even adding the price of that then iPad is still a better purchase overall.

Or imagine if they gave them away for free. Wouldn't require any marketing at all!!!

I'm trying to say that Microsoft selling the Surface at a loss would be a huge 'fuck you' to every other manufacturer, as they'd have to price their tablets higher to gain profit.

Ah, okay, that makes sense.

I was always looking forward to the Pro, not the RT so I guess this shouldn't actually bother me too much. I was thinking at least a grand for the pro anyhow.

Is thing reminds me of the Xoom, and how it was supposed to destroy the iPad.
I hope for Microsoft that it doesn't end the same. I could see W8 having much more appeal than Android though.

"Microsoft, why aren't you undercutting other Windows OEMs? You should totally do that!"

Seriously?

If they wanted Windows 8 RT to have a chance at making anything resembling a dent in the market, then yes, aggressive pricing a la the Nexus 7 would've been the way to go. This thing is dead on arrival at $499 (arguably more like $599, since I assume no one in their right mind would buy this without getting the keyboard, which is no doubt going to be the best selling point they've got if it's integrated into the OS well.)

At the VERY least, it should be $499 with the keyboard included. That would at least give them a compelling argument against the iPad 3 low-end price point.

I would, but i'm not earning american dollars...

IMO, they're trying to create a whole new market of 'productivity' tablets (again). Which could be huge.

Yeah I'm just not sure these legions of corporate road warriors they seem to be banking on are going to materialise though. They're pretty much dead in the water where the consumer market is concerned IMO, and is this really going to be big in the corporate market as opposed to an ultrabook and smartphone combo? I don't know.

I'd really like a 32gb with cover. I'll probably wait and see how it's received, but I don't think the price is outrageous.

Unlike google, Microsoft is not in the business of giving away stuff for free. That would not make the shareholders happy nor would it make the OEMs happy. If they want to continue making money with Windows, they need to keep prices up.

New iPad

16gb 499.99
32gb 599.99
64gb 699.99

Surface

32gb 499.99 (No Touch Cover)
32gb 599.99
64gb 699.99

Yeah tbh I was kind of hoping for a cheaper price but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. The 16gb iPad is the same price. RT also comes with a free copy of office as well and tbh I think it's the more capable tablet. The only issue as of now is the marketplace but that will change quickly enough anyway. This also has a Micro SD slot, mini HDMI, and USB 2.0

I don't think the price is bad either. It's literally lined right up with its competition. What I think has happened here are rumors took hold and molested our expectations. Exactly why MS should have released information on pricing sooner.

wasn't the original xbox sold at a loss?

Yes.

But if the OEM's don't come with products that are either significantly better or significantly cheaper than Apple's iPad or even the Android eco system... their shit is dead anyway and MS loses anyway...

It doesn't help MS one bit if their OEM partners release products that aren't good enough to convince consumers. What is the point of having an unsuccessful eco system?

Will wait for UK pricing, but I'm pretty sure now that it's going to be too expensive. All it has going for it is Office and an overpriced keyboard. That's not enough to put it into the iPad price range. Not with such a shitty resolution.

Thing is, history has shown that most tablets that are "lined up with the competition" in pricing that don't carry the Apple logo end up flopping hard. And this device doesn't even stack up completely hardware-wise either.

The launch will be very interesting.

Yeah, this is the other problem, especially when stuff like the Yoga 13 inevitably drops in price. What road warrior is going to bother dropping $600 on a gimped RT setup when in a few months, you will likely be able to get a nice convertible running the real deal on sale/clearance for around $800?

* microSDXC (up to 64GB), actually.

It also has Micro SD slot, mini HDMI, and USB 3.0 :) But trying it Win8 at bestbuy the other day sold me on it. It's super smooth on the touchscreen and I really liked what I saw.

Who what guys. The Acer guy has win. Remember the Acer CEO whatshisname was whining about the potential Surface RT price a few time? he has fucking won.

Surface RT tablets are now officially over priced. The cheapest w8 tablet is now Acer w510 (32gb). Acer is going to drop the hummer during holiday season and go lower.

Hilarious.

This is mind blowing.

There are two ways to get people over from a competitor

1. lower price - which they matched, so that's not going to do them any good

2. offer something they cant - they do in some sense, but, those features are only going to matter to the windows OS driven crowd, not the ipad people

Fools, microsoft.

I don't even want to know what the Pros are going to cost, which is what i was planning on getting

We're definitely going to have fun watching how this thing does.

I was hoping to go from my Nexus 7 to at least an RT, possibly the Pro if I saved up some more. But at THOSE prices and just for an RT, I'm sticking with my Nexus 7. Ridiculous pricing.

thought the pro has usb3 and SDXC, this only has usb2, SD

Not sure about USB but it says microSDXC in the image near the top of the page.

It will probably be sold at 500$/600$ if not at 600$/700$ followed by the typical doom and gloom reactions.
At that price it would still be great and comparable to the iPad. Just not the kind of instant-purchase a lot of people hope for.

I believe we don't have most of the prices for other RT tablets yet, but the ones we do have aren't all that cheap. I don't expect Microsoft to undercut OEMs by much.

Almost called it. At least the doom and gloom part. Wasn't sure what to make of the cover. With the heavy emphasize they put on it I wasn't sure they'd sell the Surface without it.

I don't know why people are comparing the price to a new iPad. Considering the difference between it and the iPad 2 is the screen resolution (and the chip / ram to drive it) and the surface is the similar lower res...

You can't get 32gb iPad 2s now though which makes direct comparison harder.

To me this is actually better than I was expecting.... I really expected it to be $599 base with the covers extra (but I did think they would only be $50)

I am going to get the base 32 gig and add a touch cover when the first sale inevitably happens. I don't actually need touch cover on day 1.
