People expecting competitive pricing were in for a rude awakening as soon as MS announced their AD budget of $1 Billion. If you remember Kinect which was another hilariously overpriced product the AD budget was an astonishig $500 Million. They are attempting to build up the Windows 8 Mindshare here and keep prices high to recoup the investment. At $300 these things would sell themselves and they wouldn't need such a huge marketing push.
Keep in mind Windows 8 takes about 10GBs of that storage. :-/
LOL MS go premium over iPad? love it.
I am asking now. Who, IN THIS THREAD, is going to buy one?
No not the "getting one for the misses" bullshit, or "getting one from work". Actually spending your hard earned after tax american dollar to buy a RT?
Count the name now.

I'm trying to say that Microsoft selling the Surface at a loss would be a huge 'fuck you' to every other manufacturer, as they'd have to price their tablets higher to gain profit.
"Microsoft, why aren't you undercutting other Windows OEMs? You should totally do that!"
Seriously?

IMO, they're trying to create a whole new market of 'productivity' tablets (again). Which could be huge.
If they wanted Windows 8 RT to have a chance at making anything resembling a dent in the market, then yes, aggressive pricing a la the Nexus 7 would've been the way to go. This thing is dead on arrival at $499 (arguably more like $599, since I assume no one in their right mind would buy this without getting the keyboard, which is no doubt going to be the best selling point they've got if it's integrated into the OS well.)
New iPad

y'all bunch of cheap asses, the leather smart cover for ipad is 70 bucks. Man up and pay
I'd really like a 32gb with cover. I'll probably wait and see how it's received, but I don't think the price is outrageous.
And that is different than Google selling the Nexus 7 at $200 how?
Unlike google, Microsoft is not in the business of giving away stuff for free. That would not make the shareholders happy nor would it make the OEMs happy. If they want to continue making money with Windows, they need to keep prices up.
wasn't the original xbox sold at a loss?

I'm not interested in RT I am interested in Pro but I fucking hate the Atom processor which the Pro has.
I don't think the price is bad either. It's literally lined right up with its competition. What I think has happened here are rumors took hold and molested our expectations. Exactly why MS should have released information on pricing sooner.
Yeah I'm just not sure these legions of corporate road warriors they seem to be banking on are going to materialise though. They're pretty much dead in the water where the consumer market is concerned IMO, and is this really going to be big in the corporate market as opposed to an ultrabook and smartphone combo? I don't know.
I'm not sure but it's possible it was sold at a loss to break into a new market and compete?
Asus is making them.
Yeah tbh I was kind of hoping for a cheaper price but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. The 16gb iPad is the same price. RT also comes with a free copy of office as well and tbh I think it's the more capable tablet. The only issue as of now is the marketplace but that will change quickly enough anyway. This also has a Micro SD slot, mini HDMI, and USB 2.0
Will wait for UK pricing, but I'm pretty sure now that it's going to be too expensive. All it has going for it is Office and an overpriced keyboard. That's not enough to put it into the iPad price range. Not with such a shitty resolution.
* microSDXC (up to 64GB) and USB 3.0, actually.
Thing is, history has shown that most tablets that are "lined up with the competition" in pricing that don't carry the Apple logo end up flopping hard. And this device doesn't even stack up completely hardware-wise either.
The launch will be very interesting.
He's talking about RT, not Pro.* microSDXC (up to 64GB) and USB 3.0, actually.
thought the pro has usb3 and SDXC, this only has usb2, SD
thought the pro has usb3 and SDXC, this only has usb2, SD
I fail to see how that matters. It is still being marketed as Google's tablet.
It will probably be sold at 500$/600$ if not at 600$/700$ followed by the typical doom and gloom reactions.
At that price it would still be great and comparable to the iPad. Just not the kind of instant-purchase a lot of people hope for.
I believe we don't have most of the prices for other RT tablets yet, but the ones we do have aren't all that cheap. I don't expect Microsoft to undercut OEMs by much.
