PlayStation Vita game review and comments thread

This thread is the place to post user reviews of games for the Vita and also to check what Gafs consensus is on any particular game.

Please note as per Mod request -
-Vita Game User Reviews (These have to actually be somewhat lengthy and high quality and not just be a megathread chatroom under the guise of a review thread. If you recommend a game here, you should have at least a few paragraphs about why you like it and think others should buy it. This will be moderated.)

Similarly to the 3DS thread we will use a +/- system for summarising reviews so please include a + or - at the end of your post. Also please write at least one line about the game!

+ Positive review
- Negative review
+- Neutral review

Click on the game title to be directed to that games OT.
Click the reviewers name to be directed to that post.

I will be constantly updating this page as I add games, so apologies if it's sparse to begin with.

Holy fuck :/ I was going to ask people to write at least a line about the game but that's so many...

i will write something up for each one - just a twitter-length or so - and i'm missing quite a lot (Assault Gunners, etc, etc)

OP, I think you should put what Nirolak said in the OP too...

You can still have community-esque threads, they just need to be more compartmentalized by interest:

Examples of threads that should be made:
-Vita Game User Reviews (These have to actually be somewhat lengthy and high quality and not just be a megathread chatroom under the guise of a review thread. If you recommend a game here, you should have at least a few paragraphs about why you like it and think others should buy it. This will be moderated.)

Why there are so many vita threads lately ?
Crackdown on megathreads, apparently.

Ok testing the game layout, how is it? Do the screens need to be smaller?
I think so. They're getting more attention in the OP than the GAF reviews part is.

Yeah, the whole point is to actually write impressions about the games, not just a giant list of pluses and cons. I'd also suggest the people posting reviews do individual posts for games like in the 3DS thread, since doing one mega-post defeats the purpose of linking to it for individual games.

Anyhoo, Dokuro gets a (+) from me.

It's a charming little puzzle platformer where the ultimate goal is to escort a princess through a trap-filled room. It's got a bit of an uneven difficulty curve for some stages, but the feeling you get when you finally figure out the game's more devious setups is, as expect, very gratifying.

The artstyle is charming and easy to look at (it's easy to tell objects apart in the background, which is crucial for puzzle games), touch controls are well-implemented (no shitty rear-touchpad implementation!) into the puzzle design and the controls are nice and responsive. There's a bit of slowdown that occurs for certain enemies that fill the screen are once, but it's nothing major and can actually be used to your benefit at times.

Dokuro has quite a bit of content to it as well. Well over 100 puzzles to clear, with a coin that one can collect in each room adding to the challenge, plus trophies that require you to constantly strive for the best time possible in each room, prompting replays to figure out more efficient strategies and ways to clear puzzles. Oh yeah, and it has a platinum trophy. Well worth the purchase!

Rayman Origins: +
Plays perfect, looks amazing!

Ninja Gaiden Sigma plus: +
Ninja Gaiden on the go, what else do you want?
plays great, looks stunning. BUY!!

Wipeout 2048: +
Great to play, even greater with the hd addons.
tons of content and plays butter smooth.

Uncharted Golden Abyss: +
Better than uncharted 3, slighlty less dan 2.
But on the go its amazing! BUY!

Metal Gear HD: +
Only played 2 untill now, it looks and plays perfect on the vita.
On to 3 now.

Gravity Rush: + -
Only 3 hours in, but the controls are somewhat mweh.
Vibe is perfect though.

Fifa football: -
fifa 11 engine is too old to enjoy when u played 12 of 13 on the 360/ps3.

Ok testing the game layout, how is it? Do the screens need to be smaller?

The screens look just fine. I was confused wether reviews were meant to be proper reviews or just put one of the three scores but it seems you do have to write something at least. I've kind of written about most of the games I played in the megathreads but I'll happily write about them again soon.

As expected i missed at least these 2 games:

retail:
everybody's(hot shot) golf: +

psn only:
super stardust delta: +

EDIT:

3 games lol

psn only:
zen pinball 2: + (it doesn't looks a lot realistic to me, or at least not as the pinball arcade demo, but it's a good game)

■Dynasty Warriors Next +
Fun and meaty, looks and runs well too.

■Hot Shots Golf World Invitational +
Big game, lots to unlock. Starts easy, gets hard.

■Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen +-
Repetive, but fun. Ugly but runs well.

■Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (PSN Only) +
Fun, funny and cheap.

■TOUCH MY KATAMARI +-
Funny, but doesn't excite me.

■Gravity Rush +
Great style, nice story, cool gameplay and fairly long.

■LittleBigPlanet Vita +
So pretty, so huge, but still more of the same.

■MotorStorm RC +-
Cool idea, hard to control - cross buy.

■Sound Shapes +
Charming with great controls, level editor and cross buy.

Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen

Shinobido 2 is a game that should be disliked for all the technical issues and confusing design choices, but oddly enough can grow on one for just being a simple and entertaining game that does not strive to be 'the next big thing.' Within the game's rather short campaign, you play as one of two ninjas who only differ aesthetically, but offer two different "palettes" to experiment stat distribution with. As you complete missions with a character, they gain experience and upon leveling up receive one point to put towards increasing their survivability, offense, or special ability which is basically a ranged instant kill move for both characters. Through the campaign, you will be tasked with assisting one of three warlords in a variety of rather mundane tasks that range from assassinating specific targets, or protecting VIPs, the latter which shows off the game's terrible friendly fire system that only serves to work against the player. Missions are never deep or intricate and the story line is anything but interesting. Just running through the campaign without fiddling with the somewhat complex alchemy system, a system that I did not grasp at all, will take about 5 hours.

If anything, it is the actual gameplay itself that is of interest. Stealth is governed by a simple yet effective visual eye that changes depending on the enemy's awareness of your presence. The enemy is not all the bright however; breaking line of sight for a few seconds send them back to neutral state and simply return to the same path they were on previously. Regardless, zipping around roof tops, sprinting and leaping from house to house, and stabbing unwary samurai is still quite an enjoyable experience when it works. The combat system never feels too complex; in some ways the enjoyment I had with it was found in its simplicity. From what I recall, controls were decent and touch screen implementation was inoffensive.

Shinobido 2 is not a game I would recommend at full price, but if simple stealth mechanics, and the allure of playing as a ninja outweighs some strange design decisions and bland mission designs, it is an entertaining game if you can find it cheap. Also, completing the game lets you swap character models, one of which is a great big brown bear.

------------------

I hope this isn't too lengthy. If you wanted only like one or two lines let me know.

My Vita library.

Retail:
Lumines (+) best version to date of an addictive puzzle game.
Disgaea 3 (+) works better on a portable than on a console, in my opinion. Fantastic time sink.
Virtua Tennis 4 (+) full featured Virtua Tennis, high quality visuals, on a portable where it still plays incredibly well.
Metal Gear Solid HD (+) these two games on a portable seemed too good to be true not so long ago.
MLB 12 The Show (+) lacks some of the presentation of it's PS3 big brother, but the franchise mode, career mode, and rock solid game play redefine what handheld sports games can be. Will buy MLB 13.
WipEout 2048 (+) one of my favorite games in recent history. The expansion with HD and Fury maps is fantastic, visual heavyweight
Uncharted: Golden Abyss (+) I'm not a series fanboy and think that U1 is a little overrated while U2 and U3 are too repetitive and are more sizzle than steak. GA acquits itself very well in the series and offers meatier gameplay than it's console counterparts, which is an aberration for handheld side stories.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus (+) its 30 fps but its otherwise awesome.
Rayman Origins (+) my favorite way to play the game.
Gravity Rush (+) worth buying the system for in my opinion. Not a perfect experience, but polished enough for it's uniqueness to shine and give us something different.
Mortal Kombat (+) looks a little rough visually, plays super smooth, tons of content.
Touch My Katamari (-) not my favorite series, got it as a gift, its an ok iteration I'm sure but if you've played Katamari elsewhere this isn't going to blow your mind. Probably only a (-) thanks to my own bias though.
Madden NFL 13 (+) like it better than the console versions. It plays more like Madden 12 but the franchise mode does too which is a big plus for me. Can't stand the new connected careers crap.

PSN:
Super Stardust Delta (+) excellent iteration in an excellent new franchise.
Motorstorm RC (+) reminds me of that old off-road arcade game, can't recall the name. Really like it.
Mutant Blobs Attack (+) awesome platformer.
Pure Chess (+) very good portable chess iteration.
Sound Shapes (+) better on Vita than PS3.
Treasure Park (+) minesweeper-like for free, I'm game.
Zen Pinball 2 (+) only system I care to play the game on.
Plants Vs Zombies (+) another port that has it's best version on Vita.

Minis:
Velocity (+) if you own a Vita you must play this game. Fucking BRILLIANT.

Sunflowers (+) - same price as the iOS version but with trophies and near support. You can also use the rear touch to move the sun and just use the L1/R1 triggers to fire rain droplets. Flower collecting and breeding can get addicting. Breeding is a bit random though, similar combinations do not result in the same flower. The OST is available for download too.

Retail:
 • DJMAX Technika Tune: +, if you're into rhythm games, this is a must-have.
 • F1 2011: +-, muddy graphics and easy AI, but the gameplay in itself is decent. Time Trials are pretty fun
 • Gravity Rush: +, one of the most original games released this year. Great characters, fun gameplay and a big world to explore. Some people find the combat to be a bit frustrating, but every Vita owner should have played this game.
 • LittleBigPlanet: +, this is not some kind of portable spin-off, but simply the best entry in the series.
 • Lumines Electronic Symphony: +, very fun and addictive.
 • Uncharted: Golden Abyss: +, probably the closest thing to a "console experience" on a handheld. Looks impressive.
 • Virtua Tennis 4: +, looks and plays amazing even if you're not a tennis enthusiast.
 • WipEout 2048: +, fantastic game with a lot of content, especially with the DLC. Load times are a bit annoying, but manageable.

PSN:
 • Escape Plan: -, I liked the premise and artstyle of the game and really wanted to enjoy this, but didn't find the game to be fun at all when playing.
 • Motorstorm RC: +, very fun, challenging and A LOT of content. My first Vita platinum, too :]
 • Sound Shapes: +, great 2D platformer with awesome music and level design. Pretty short if you're just interested in the SP, but the level editor adds a lot of replayability.
 • Stardrone Extreme: -, similar to Escape Plan, looked fun in the trailers, didn't like the game though.
 • Super Stardust Delta: +, very fun and challenging dual stick sh'm'up.
 • Table Top Tanks: +-, one of the better AR games I've played. Kinda fun when it works as it's supposed too, can be frustrating when it doesn't, though.
 • Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack: +, fun, quirky 2D platformer for little money, must-have for Vita owners.
 • Treasures of Montezuma Blitz: +, I enjoy this more than I'd like to admit. It's free to play with microtransactions, but it's perfectly playable in short bursts without buying anything.

Here is my list -- will edit in one-liners when I have time.

Retail
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend +
[Beautifully animated, deeply technical, and just as good as it's console brethren.]

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance -
[Feels like a Gameloft cell phone game. Oh wait; it was originally born as one.]

Dynasty Warriors Next +
[Silly Vita-feature over-use aside, this is a very solid entry into the DW series. Fluid and fun.]

Hot Shots Golf World Invitational +
[It's Hot Shots Golf -- it will toy with your emotions, from feeling like the worst gamer ever, to feeling like the fucking champ. And that's why it is so good.]

Lumines:Electronic Symphony +
[It is more Lumines -- more of the same -- but maintains a killer soundtrack, adds a few features, and looks killer on that OLED.]

Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus +-
[If you have never played NG before and like action games, I can recommend it. Does such a person exist?]

Rayman Origins +
[Along with BlazBlue, some of the most beautiful 2D seen on the system. Fluid, fun, and beautiful. 2D platformers live on.]

Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen +-
[A fun ninja game that becomes repetitive but holds charm for old Tenchu fans. If you can get it for $20 or less, do it.]

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 +
[It is UMvC3, just as fast, just as beautiful, and just as fun -- on the go. Winner.]

Uncharted: Golden Abyss +
[Despite sub-res, it set the standard for what Vita games can look like, and that is 'breathtaking'. There is some silly shit with the touch screen, AI, and puzzles, but this IS Uncharted.]

WipEout 2048 +
[In my humble opinion, the greatest portable racing game of all time. I don't feel like I need to say anything else.]

Disgaea 3 Returns +
[If you like strategy RPGs and haven't played this yet, I recommend you do so. Funny, zany, and addictive -- I hope you have a lot of free hours.]

DJ Max: Technika Tune +
[An incredibly fun and very accurate front-and-back touch music game based on the Korean arcade hit. Great music (and a lot of it), a lot to unlock, and solid mechanics make this game a winner.]

Gravity Rush +
[The gravity mechanic is amazing -- I spent hours just floating around and exploring the expansive city. Combat can seem cumbersome at times but the music, art style, gravity mechanics, and Kat herself make this game one of the best currently on the system.]

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA f +
[Unbelievably high production values meet catchy pop tunes. The music videos are amazing, the music gameplay simple but addicting, and there is just something about Miku...]

LittleBigPlanet Vita +
[Not just a great platforming experience, but also the tools to build games to your hearts desire? Yes. Yes.]

Lord of Apocalypse +-
[If it looks like a PSP game and feels like a PSP game... it must be a PSP game! But that doesn't mean it can't be a fun, if uninspired, Monster Hunter/PSO ripoff.]

New King's Story +
[Action-strategy-townbuilder. A unique experience. Not everyone will love it, but if you want to try something different, or enjoyed it's prequel, look no further.]

Ragnarok Odyssey +
[In it's original JP release form this would get a +- from me, but with all the continuous support of the product (expansion packs, items, music, and online mode) all being added for free (and making the game exponentially better), this gets a +]

Persona 4 Golden +
[Like RPGs? How about the best version of one of the best RPGs of all time? The new scenes are great and this game will keep you busy for a long, long time. The music (new tracks included) is great, too.]

Time Travelers +
[Most of you won't play this. Many of you will never read about this game again. Just know that, despite my bias for anything paying homage to Back to the Future, the story here is interesting and the characters (all but one!) feel decently real and alive.]

Tales of Innocence R +
[Adds a whole lot more to the DS product than originally meets the eye. The story is a bit ridiculous, but hey, it's a JRPG. The battle system is Tales and most importantly, the game is /fun/.]

Ys Celceta no Jukai +
[Fast paced, action packed, sporting killer tunes and some stunning scenery; Celceta takes everything Ys 7 did right and makes it better, and everything 7 didn't do so well and, well, makes it better. One of my favorite games of the year.]

Earth Defense Force Portable 3 +
[Blow shit up, with friends or online. Lots of weapons to choose from, plenty of collectibles, and difficult enough to keep you from getting bored.]

PSN Only
Super Stardust Delta (PSN) +
[Twin-analog space-confined shooter goodness. Should be required Vita-downloading.]

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (PSN) +
[Fun, unique, and beautiful. If you like 2D platformers, get it.]

Sound Shapes +
[2D platforming meets music-making. Play it loud, play it with headphones.]

Picotto Knights +-
[A fun free-to-play online beat-em-up. Levels can be very short and the difficulty goes from boredom-easy to wtf-hard.]

Treasure Park +-
[An enjoyable take on social games where you have to use your head. I just wish the server connecting times weren't so long (and frequent).]

PS Mobile
Fuel Tiracas +
[Like whack-a-mole on crack. With a touchscreen.]

Samurai Beatdown +-
[Two button music game in the guise of a 2D scroller. The music beats are a bit off sometimes and the levels are too long.]

Beats Slider +-
[I don't like slider games, but the music is great.]

I'm not sure if adding pictures for every game is a good idea...the list would be clearer without them, but obviously it would look more appealing, too. Maybe just add links to the screens?

Hmm. See I don't know about that, I feel like people need to see what a game looks like personally. I'm open to change though so if people think I'm wrong please tell me so!

Ill probably cut it down to a single screen per game though

I agree with this but too many screens make the list annoying to scroll through imo. 1 screen per game sounds ok.

Here are my reviews
Minna No Golf 6 + (best golf game I've played since minna portable on psp)
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 + (pure fun on the go)
Uncharted + (even as a side story I had a blast with this)
Gravity Daze + (even with tricky controls I love this game)
Dj Max Technika Tune + (has become one of my all time favorite music titles in no time)
Rayman Origins + (most fun I've had in a platformers in years and perfect on the vita)
Ragnorok Odyssey + (really had a blast playing this online)
Hatsune Miku Project Diva F + (another awesome music game)
Persona 4 the Golden + (great version of persona 4, loving every minute of it)
Ys Celcesta + (becoming one of my favorite more recent action games)

I have more games but not yet ready to review them as I need to play them more. Such as little big planet, disgaea 3, time travelers, Zero no Kiseki and others. But yeah so far I haven't had a bad game I've bought for the vita. Not even a neutral feeling. Every game I've bought has been stellar for me.

Army Corps of Hell +-: Sadly a bit repetitive, but still fun, nice Pikmin style gameplay, level design is boring though
Asphalt Injection -: Absolutely barebones racing game, feels absolutely cheap.
Dungeon Hunter Alliance -: Lol, what a mess, one boring game
F1 2011 -: Better than the 3DS version, but not by a lot
Fifa Soccer -: But I actually hate sports games, so his isn't all too telling.
Everybodys Golf +: I like the classic golf gameplay and it's really a fun game
Little Deviants +-: Not a great game, some fun mini games but not at full price. The "main" minigame this game was presented with is horrible though
Lumines +: Nice puzzle game, even if I'd have liked it to have more content
Mod Nation Racers -: Bad racing game with terrible visuals
Michael Jackson: The Experience +-: It's fun, but not worth its money at all
Rayman Origins + : One incredible game, ported nicely to Vita
Touch my Katamarai +-: A bit unimaginative, but still fun
Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 +-: Very much on the short side regarding single player content, fighting mechanics are nice, though
Uncharted Golden Abyss +-: Plays itself most of the time, really is a horrible dazzler that looks awesome but doesn't let the player really play a great game, some parts of the game are so horribly uninteractive that I wasn't even sure if I should put the + in front of the -
Wipeout 2048 +: The best Wipeout imo. Still I'm not fond of the floaty physics and would like the game to be way faster, but it was fun to play anyway
Reality Fighters -: One of the worst games I've ever played, doesn't even work properly and is a nuisance to play, stay far away from that turd
Ridge Racer Vita +-: Plays well, but where's the content? DLC is inaccaptable

I think I've played nearly all the Vita games that have come out in North America, but I'll try and do some quick reviews for games that may not get as much attention...

Asphalt: Injection: +- (it's absurdly overpriced, considering you can get the exact same game on Android and iOS for a fraction of the price. That said, if you can get past paying a massive premium for a ported smartphone game -- or, even better, if you can find it for cheap -- it's a moderately fun arcade racer.)

Ben 10: Galactic Racing: - (muddy graphics, lousy kart handling, overall terrible experience)

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock: - (Admittedly, I haven't played much of this, but what little I have played doesn't leave more wanting to play more. The running and jumping feels really clunky, and it barely looks better than a 3DS game.)

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance: - (See Asphalt: Injection. Way overpriced for what's essentially a ported phone game, but worth checking out if you can get it for extremely cheap.)

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7: + (The cutscenes look absolutely awful, and you can see that they were ported directly from the 3DS version. Beyond that one problem, though, this is a fun game. The gameplay itself looks a lot better, and overall it's your usual high quality Lego experience.)

Madden NFL 13: +- (Significantly better than the demo would lead you to believe -- it's not nearly that slow and glitchy. It's not the same as its console counterpart...but it's not too far off from the console version of Madden 12. If you don't mind that you're basically getting a port of a year-old game -- and I certainly didn't, since I'm not a Madden obsessive -- you won't be disappointed.)

MLB 12: The Show: + (Not as fully-featured or as pretty as the console version of the game, but still the kind of deep, immersive experience that previous versions of The Show have led you to expect.)

Plants vs. Zombies: + (Not that different from the version you can get almost almost literally everywhere else, but still fun.)

Spy Hunter: + (Car handling is a little drifty, and it looks almost cartoony at times. But whatever, I'm having fun with it.)

SunFlowers: + (So adorable! So fun! So worth $4!)

Supremacy MMA: Unrestricted: - (Crappy graphics, unresponsive controls, repetitive gameplay. Avoid!)

Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention (+)

I freaking love Disgaea. It's a SRPG series with the usual grid movement, turn-based battles, and standard RPG elements. But IMO, other SRPGs tend to feel tedious, while Disgaea is fun, fast-paced, easy to dive into, and it's just as deep and expansive. The series also features a few unique gameplay elements like lifting/throwing and geo blocks, which allows for map designs that are creative and puzzle-like. Oh, and it has a quirky sense of humor, and is chock full of references and parodies.

This game is mostly a straight port of the PS3 game, but with all the DLC content included, plus some new content, and some gameplay tweaks. So it's absolutely worth the $40 price tag if you're new to D3.

The biggest improvement to me is actually that post-game grinding is now way easier. You can obtain one of the best pieces of equipment pretty early in the post-game, and maxing out the item's stats is really straightforward. Disgaea is known for its intricate gameplay systems and endless grinding possibilities, but this game is much simpler to grasp and faster to reach stat caps.

If you're new to Disgaea, don't worry. Beating the main story doesn't require that much grinding or understanding of how things work. Afterwards, you can start to explore at your own pace and figure things out from there.

If you've played the PS3 game, I think you'll have to decide for yourself whether you want more of it. But if you haven't played the PS3 game, I would highly recommend D3:AoD. It'll probably be the best SRPG the Vita ever has.

Gravity Rush (-)

After playing the demo I was skeptical, but gave GR a chance anyways since it received such warm reviews. Unfortunately, the final product was underwhelming too.

There's basically two aspects to the gameplay: platforming and combat. Platforming works alright: just point to where you want to fall to. I actually ended up flying through the air most of the time, instead of just running/jumping on a surface. It's really cool when you're just relaxing and exploring the town.

But there are some problems. You can only fly in straight lines, and you have to stop to readjust. The camera also tends to rotate in weird directions while you're in the air, instead of just staying still. To maintain a sense of orientation, I tapped D-pad down quite often, which resets the camera to align with normal gravity.

Combat, on the other hand, is terrible, and there's lots of it. The combat is what really drags down the experience. Every enemy encounter just felt more and more tedious. Plus you have to fight with the clunky controls and weird camera. Evade should've been mapped to a face button instead of a touchscreen swipe. Probably would've made the combat less annoying.

Thankfully the game only took 10 hours to plow through. The ending wasn't even worth it though.

I don't recommend this game at all. The idea of gravity control makes sense for a platformer, but just doesn't lend itself well to combat. Hopefully the sequel will have heavier emphasis on puzzles and platforming.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (+)

Don't be deceived by the cutesy graphics, this game is really deep, challenging, and has lots of content. There are six golf courses in total. The main challenge mode consists of six ranks, each with five normal events and one VS event. Then the seventh rank has one final VS event. Oh, and every VS event has a harder version you can unlock by collecting crowns.

This was my first HSG game, so I was overwhelmed at first because the game basically leaves you to learn to play on your own. But there's plenty of explanations and advice on the internet. It's very much a skill-based game, and it was very satisfying to feel my skills improving after hours and hours of practice.

The difficulty curve is pretty steady, but I did chicken out and started using easy mode in the middle of the fourth rank. (I've since gone back and beat everything on normal difficulty.) Accidentally hitting the ball out of bounds or in the water can completely destroy your chances of winning, which is frustrating, but such is the game of golf.

My other gripe is the shop. As you play you earn points, which are used to buy things at the shop. I focused on buying only things I really needed, but the prices rapidly outpaced the rate I was earning points. I just felt like it took too long to unlock stuff.

Overall HSG:WI is great. Deep skill-based gameplay, tight controls, extensive content, pretty much everything I wanted of it. I would definitely recommend this game, it's well worth the asking price.

Lumines: Electronic Symphony (+-)

I played the first Lumines alot, so I felt right at home with this game. It's a block-clearing puzzle game with groovy music, vibrant graphics, and stylish presentation.

There's a few new gameplay elements here. Shuffle blocks: at first these seemed annoying, but after they saved me a few times from the dreaded checkerboard pattern, I started to really appreciate them. Avatar abilities: I rarely used these, mainly because I forgot about them. Experience system: as you play you gain XP and level up, which unlocks new skins and avatars. IMO this was a pretty useless addition.

There are some different modes of play, such as voyage (the main mode), master mode (extra challenging), stopwatch mode (fixed time intervals), playlist (custom tracklist), and duel. Unfortunately duel mode is versus CPU or local multiplayer only. No online multiplayer is kind of a disappointment, just online leaderboards.

Overall Lumines ES a decent entry in the series. Gameplay is solid as usual, but I was left wanting more from it. If you're looking for a fun puzzle game, this is it, but try to find it at a lower price.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (+)

If you've never played MGS2 or MGS3, you need to buy this collection ASAP, for any of the platforms it's on (PS3, 360, Vita). They're the two best MGS games ever. Hell, even if you own the PS2 games, I'd still recommend buying the HD Collection, it's just that amazing. The console versions include Peace Walker, but the Vita version is portable.

I'm really impressed by how great the game looks on Vita while running at a smooth 30 fps, and sometimes 60 fps in certain areas. Controls are tight, and mapping the L2/R2 buttons to the touch screen works perfectly. There are some other optional controls using the touch screen and rear touch pad, but I never really used them.

Gameplay-wise, both games have held up perfectly fine. Lots of action games these days have stealth elements. MGS does it just right, and there's no need to mess with the classics. The layouts, puzzles, and boss battles are all really well designed.

Story-wise, MGS2 is ... entertaining, and MGS3 is beautiful and memorable. I'd suggest playing MGS1 first if you can, preferably the Twin Snakes versions since the PS1 controls are clunky and outdated. You can do without it, but it'll maximize the experience.

There's plenty of content in this package too. The main games have good replay value, since you can approach each situation in a number of ways. Outside of that, there's VR missions (lots of them), Snake Tales (which are extra challenging), and the original MG and MG2 on MSX.

MGS HD Collection is my favorite Vita title so far. It's got two awesome games that look great and run smoothly on the Vita. Can't go wrong with picking up this title.

Rayman Origins (+)

Easily one of the best 2D platformers in recent years. Play it on whatever platform you like. Just play it.

It's a fairly standard platformer in terms of gameplay and structure. You can run, jump, attack, glide, swim, wall jump, and wall run. The controls are spot-on, and the physics feel good. Level design is solid, pacing is smooth, and the boss fights are excellent.

There's 10 worlds with several levels each. To break things up, there's boss fights, side-scrolling shooter levels, and treasure chest levels, which require quick reflexes to chase down a treasure chest. There's also a final uber-difficult challenge level. To unlock all that, you have to find all the hidden secrets in each level. So there's an ample amount of content.

Graphically, the backgrounds and animations are fun, bright, and gorgeous, especially on an OLED screen. The creativity is just oozing out of this game.

I really can't think of anything negative to say about RO. It's everything I want from a 2D platformer, and it's probably my 2nd favourite Vita game.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss (+-)

I'm quite impressed by what Sony Bend was able to accomplish for launch. I was cautiously optimistic about the game, but I'm pleased with the results. It's a strong, enjoyable launch title with a few flaws.

First off, the touch control features are kind of hit and miss. Some of the ideas are pretty neat, most are annoying or useless. It's not really that bad, just something you have to deal with.

The real problem is that analog stick aiming is sluggish. There's a slight lag between when you push the stick and when the cursor moves, because for some reason, the cursor has to accelerate first. Increasing the sensitivity doesn't help, because then it's harder to make fine adjustments. Gyroscope aiming works better IMO, though you really have to turn alot to move the cursor a large distance.

On the positive side, the story is interesting, the graphics are beautiful, and the voice acting is solid. The production values are very, very impressive, especially for a handheld. And the gameplay is alright too. The gunfights were sometimes frustrating, but the platforming was fine, just totally linear. The bite-sized chapters kept me going with "just one more chapter".

Overall I'd say this game was the perfect launch title to showcase the system, and is worthy of the Uncharted name. It was a satisfying experience and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested.

Unit 13 (+)

I was pleasantly surprised by Unit 13. It's an arcade-style third-person shooter with fairly typical action/shooter elements like cover, blind fire, grenades, stealth, sniping, etc, which are all implemented appropriately. The controls are intuitive and responsive, and the touchscreen controls fit perfectly.

The environments are open, non-linear, and well-designed, so you can approach each situation in a variety of different ways. You also get to choose from six operatives and edit their weapon loadout. So you can go pure stealth, or guns ablazing, or whatever play style you like. Unit 13 isn't a story-driven game (there is no story), but a high-score driven game. I found myself replaying some of the missions dozens of times, in order to figure out the best route to take, and to execute it perfectly.

There are 36 normal missions, categorized into 4 types of missions and 9 different maps (do the math). So the maps do get recycled, but it's not a big deal. Some changes are made from mission to mission. Some routes are blocked or opened, your starting position is different, and of course enemy positions/patterns are different. To add to that, there are also 9 high value target missions, which are extra challenges. Plenty of content for the asking price.

The biggest issue is that the enemy AI is hilariously dumb. Predictability is sort of a good thing when you're repeating a mission for a high score. But sometimes they run and find cover in such a way that completely exposes themselves to you. Whatever, just makes them easier to kill.

If you're in the mood for a shooter, I definitely recommend Unit 13. It's not a complex sophisticated game, it's just pure fun. Try the demo if you're not sure. It's the final product, but only the first mission is available.

Retail:

Uncharted GA (+) One of the best action adventure experiences on a handheld
Wipeout2048 (+) great title as is. fantabulous when couple with HF and Fury packs
Mortal Kombat (+-) tons of content backed into title. Not a fan of how the characters translated to the small screen
Gravity Rush (+) refreshing new IP. Good art style. Gravity mechanics could be improved
MGS HD Collection (+) amazing port of MGS 2 and MGS 3. Touch controls are a perfect touch (no pun intended)
LBP: Vita (+) arguably the best game on the Vita. I'd give it a +++ if I could

PSN:

Mutant Blobs Attack (+) One of the best 2D experiences period
Motostorm RC (+) RC pro am vibe. It won't catch your attention for long periods of time but good in spurts

PSM:

Hungry Giraffe (+-) It is what it is title. You munch while your neck grows.
Super Crate Box (+) Additive title
Aqua Kitty (+) Another well made budget title

eh, why not, I have some free time anyway. here's my review"

-Uncharted GA (+) smaller in scale and setpieces, and the analog aiming is stiff, but introduce me to gyro aiming which felt incredible and very satisfying. the added exploration and collectibles with photograph spot, background for every artifact etc are a very welcome addition to the series.

-Metal Gear HD (+) it's MGS, we already know the game is great, so you just need to know if the port job is good or not, and thankfully it delivers big time. a lot of content too with MG1 and 2, and virtual mission.

-Gravity Daze (+) gorgeous art and music, very adorable main character, and intriguing backstory that will hopefully be fleshed out in the sequel, it have unique gameplay too with a couple flaws, which again hopefully be expanded on sequel. hit and miss for people whether they can get used to the control or not, personally, I love it a lot.

-Little Big Planet (+) best LBP to date, and near functionality is actually neat, it can serve as level recommendation from your friend

-Hatsune Miku (+-) it's very fun while it last, but the song are acquired taste since it's all digitized voice, now that I've unlock al; the song, not sure I'll go back to play since the hardest difficulty is impossible for me, and I don't know enough about idol room to care what I should be doing other than buy random item and give it to my singer. keep in mind that it's not the game's fault, but more of my taste in music. looking forward for DJ Max if maybe I'll like that better.

-Disgaea 3 (+)great game, great port. I'm passing disgaea 4 ps3 for the inevitable Disgaea 4 Vita, since this genre is better suited for handheld anyway.

-Hot Shot Golf 6 (+) great game for everybody, even if you don't play golf in real life, the game is simple on the surface, but have lots of variable working behind the scene that in no time you'll be factoring a lot of things to your shot and you got huge satisfaction when you get great shot based on your calculation.

-Motorstorm RC (+) it has such a perfect control, it's so simple control setup, but after you get used to it, by the end of the race, you'll know what you're doing wrong or how you can improve your time

-Escape Plan (-) not so much a puzzle game like I hope, but more of exercise of how your finger can navigate the various object you can interact with to lead the 2 main character across the screen. finger dexterity matter more than your brain in this game.

-Sunflowers (+-) it's a fun game, but only after you reach lv 15 or so, before that, the game is pretty boring since there are very few thundercloud you have to avoid, and normal cloud also move slowly so little chance to miss them.

-Mutant Blobs Attack (+) very good platformer for vita, a must play for fans of the genre.

-retro city rampage (+-) the pace is just too fast and frantic, I felt like I have no time to sit back, relax, and try to spot all the reference and homage the game have, also, for an open world game, I'm not feeling like I want to explore the city because the game keep hurriedly pushing you forward. the 8 direction analog driving also felt way to sensitive to me.

Gravity Rush (-)

No, you can move Kat while shifting gravity. And as for the combat, you really should be using her other powers instead of just gravity kicking.

No, you can move Kat while shifting gravity. And as for the combat, you really should be using her other powers instead of just gravity kicking.

Yes, you can control Kat as she's falling, but not to a large extent.

I used stasis field sometimes, but gravity slide controls were just awful. Anyways, later in the game, most of the fights (especially boss fights) are in the air and mainly rely on the gravity kick. Combat was just tedious and not fun. It was like the game just threw groups of enemies at me to annoy me.

Enough that you don't need to re-adjust often if at all. And it makes sense that you can't fully manipulate where she falls.

Mess around with the sensitivity until the motion controls feel right for sliding. It's easily the most fun combat mechanic to use. And when you're able to seamlessly connect sliding and gravity kicking, you end up with some very satisfying kills.
