I find Pop-GAF utterly baffling (RANT)

Whew sis?

I am a card carrying POPGAF member (well, ex) but even I get tired when people come for an artist simply because they don't sell as much. Marina in this thread is a perfect example.

How corny is hip hop gaf? I make a few posts about liking Rick Ross many months ago and to this day random hip hop gaf posters follow me into threads making random comments about Rick Ross being fat, as if I'm supposed to effected by their posts

LOOL. Dont worry, Little rozay, Recon will be banned again soon so you can come out the woodwork and shoot your potshots.

Hahahhaha, I rest my case, thanks for saving me the time of looking an example

POPGAF also stans for Janelle Monae, Kimbra, M.I.A., Grimes and other commercially flopping artist. But Marina just sucks.

She has no identity and her sound is pretty basic. All IMO, of course.

What the fuck. :lol

Best part? It just happened again in this thread, some random hip hop gaf poster makes a comment about Rick Ross to me like they think "this is sure to make him mad!! Hehehe"

Literally laughed out loud seeing how soon it happened after I made that post

Pop gaf is awesome. Way too hardcore for me to post in there though. I have a 'jack of all trades, master of none' music taste. I like a little bit of almost everything. The only musical artist I really obsess over is Morrissey.

My ranking and breakdown (not serious) -

1. EDM-gaf: To niche to draw unwelcome attention, family of super knowledgeable and agreeable dudes. Support each other with love.

2. Pop-gaf: Happy go-lucky fun group of grown men, don't take things seriously. Loves gifs. Support each other with happiness.

3. Rap-gaf: Hung up on the 90s. Love making lists of favorite wutang songs. Blackace greatest DJ on gaf. Troll each other.

Pop-GAF is awful.

at first I was....pop gaf is terrible. Then I actually took the time to read the threads( I shouldn't judge a book by its cover)

overall, nice people, funny replies, lol gifs. they get my vote of approval.

I've not been into a POPGAF thread. Well ... there is the odd occasion where I click on Popgaf thinking it's Poligaf. I can't stand POP music, but to each their own.

I can't imagine anyone hating POP-GAF tho. They seem like a pretty fun loving group.

only thing that drives me nuts a little is when they address each other as 'Sis'. So are they male or female? I MUST KNOW.

Dont forget Azealia Banks!

lololol That's amazing.

Maybe I should post my love for my new jam Haze.Boogie.Life by Mykki Blanco in there, I wonder what kind of reaction I would get. Sounds like fun.

Meh, I had high hopes for her, but Mykki Blanco's flow is just too damn reductive. She also does that annoying thing basic rappers do where they think they've come up with a REALLY DOPE line and so they repeat it through the rest of the song.

Pass on ha ass.

Anyway. TO THE OP:

Stop using "indie music" as a catch-all term, it's as meaningless as doing the same for games.

No-one enters those waters, so we can't know for sure.

Well, there's this one dude who uses a muscular humanoid wolf(or was it eagle?) avatar, so it's possible to guesstimate what goes in there.

These pop-gaf threads make me hate pop-gaf, the gifs suck

can we banish them to neopop.com

If there's one thing you can credit POPGAF for, it's the fact that their GIFs are flawless.

Y'all use such BASIC GIFs elsewhere. It's just EMBARRASSING how terrible some of them are. And how overtly abused they are.

I find people who label entire genres like pop into "how could grown men like this shit" category baffling.

I'd like to thank all three people in this thread with the self awareness to offer a cogent response.

This is a strange thread, with strange posts. OP why do you care? You just ignore them or something

Did NOT expect thread to get this big :P Ok, so lots of angry posts and getting a lot of "why do you care about what other people into" responses telling me to just stay away. I'm just curious! Maybe I need to realise there's a major disconnect with internet pop fan culture and IRL. I want to know the reasoning, and a few people have give theirs. I'd like more people giving well-detailed points about why they're into pop music.

I know pop is a weird term because it can be a genre or a structure of a song. Like, new wave (Gary Numan) was just the poppier version of post-punk. But I just don't hear enough modern pop music that sounds inspired or putting their own stamp. Too many club tracks, repetitive structures, or over-reliance on oooahhhhs.

This is utterly hilarious coming from you Messofanego, one who is on the same level as a Wilbury or a Eggman or a Blame Space.

Pop Gaf are fine, you don't like them don't click their thread, or any pop related threads, they're one of the better communities on here.

I'm flattered? Didn't know I already had a reputation, nice to know :P Did you used to have Yugioh avatars?

I wonder what the crossover is like with Gay-GAF. ;)

I like pop. Out of my circle of friends I'm probably one of the ones who are most willing to let Radio 1 be on in the background and hum along to Call Me Maybe or whatever new tune is the big fad. I think pop is a really good genre.

With that said, I just leave it at the songs. Pop-GAF take it so seriously they're up there with Wrestle-GAF as the worst of the worst when it comes to shitting up threads.

With so much good content on Radio 4 or 5 (Kermode :3), I feel weird turning to Radio 1. It's like "what's going over here..." but it all sounds the same to me.

I went to one con... NEVER AGAIN.

Anyways, I've pretty much developed a theory on why people like pop music based on my own experience:

  1. The Singer(s) is(are) attractive
  2. There is some sort of dance to the song
  3. A few of their songs are catchy or have a hook
  4. They enjoy primarily feel good music
  5. The Singer(s) is(are) attractive

I think the image of the group (or singer) has a LOT to do with whether or not people enjoy a specific group or artist.

I think there's some truth to this. Why don't I see a huge Adele or Angel Haze or some not as attractive pop singer's thread?

GET DAT PROMO Pop Gaf!

The lessor communities wished they had this much promo tbh.

More viewers and posters are welcome. We will be handing out sign in sheets shortly for the ones who want to get EDUCATED.

Also LOL @ the baboon not knowing the xx is POP poor Dat

You tried tho

I straight up need a translator for Kyon's posts. Putting "pressed" and "shade" on urban dictionary.

how about the idea that 'manufactured' music is still made by a person, who might actually be very talented? the fact that a vehicle used to present the music doesn't inherently make it worthless. in the 90s a few of the top UK drum and bass producers were also making the tracks for pop music (uncredited), because they were very talented producers.

i think its a kind of childish attitude to say that whatever form of music you happen to like is somehow more 'cool' than what other people like. in that case you are still associating an image with the music, in this case a snobbish 'i'm so indie and unique and cool' one. its really not that different to pop. there are people who would look down their nose at the xx as an example of 'proper' music, just like you look down on pop.

i think its good to be able to appreciate more experimental or less-traditional forms of music but theres not necessarily inherently more value to it.

My problem with the pop music industry is here. I don't get to know directly who made the music to a great pop song front and centre, someone would have to tell me that. That's totally different with other fields of music where I know who made the beat to a hip hop song, where it's sampled from, or rock bands where it's not hard to find out.

Like why do I love Lily Allen's "The Fear" so much? I like some Marina and the Diamonds (first album only :P). That kind of satirical darker pop.

If there are sub-divisions to pop music like other genres, do inform me. All I know is synth-pop, and I love Grimes if she can be considered pop.
