Star Wars: TOR Free 2 Play - Will you play it?

My post has nothing to do with the supposed difficulty of said content but the fact that is has content that requires groups of people to complete.

I think you're misunderstanding the metaphor.

The point is that just as training wheels are so small that you can't really classify a bike as being a three (or more accurately four) wheeled vehicle, the amount of group content/interaction in TOR is so small relative to the rest of the game that you can't really classify it as a massively multiplayer game.

It's like arguing with someone that LOTRO is a PVP game. I mean there is technically player vs player combat, but it is so small compared to the rest of the game that it is irrelevant.

Game has tons of group content, more than many MMOs have launched with and they have added more since launch. Problem with TOR was that a player could play to Max level and never have to group. If your not a power player or into end game, you could play and avoid all the grouping opportunities. It had no group finder at launch originally too which made things harder on folks.

Yes I agree, LOTRO has some of the best looking areas and the only MMO that beats it is Vanguard - however everything else (as I said) is subpar at best. Combat is boring and stilted. Also as for overleveling, I don't see the big deal.. that is the whole point of the bonus storylines, to gather additional credits/experience and obviously experience more story. Also of course LOTRO is going to have more content/events and the like because the game is 5 years old now.

If you haven't played Tera, you haven't seen what are hands-down the best looking areas in any MMO ever. Unreal Engine 3 does things in Tera you wouldn't believe possible since most UE3 games are console corridor shooters. The combat in Tera is amazing too, from 1 to 60 you're literally doing nothing but classic WoW quests but you won't be bored for a minute killing 10 of this and gathering 5 of that. It's too bad Tera completely falls apart at endgame, because on your way there it's one of the best MMOs I've ever played.

I think Tera has the best looking environments and graphics but LotRO has the more charming locales, especially if you're familiar with the lore and are a fan of the books in the first place.

I've heard the latest round of restrictions, they prove that EA hasn't even taken a look around the rest of the MMO sphere even after this debacle to see what F2P models even work. It's like EQ2's model, only more ridiculous.

One thing I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on lately is whether the race restrictions mean that if you have an existing character of a race that isn't one of the ones you can create for free, does that mean you can't play that character again without buying the race?

I have 2 characters I'd play to finish the class story, but not if I have to re-buy races I could create at release.

they stated that you can select which characters you can "keep" in f2p ( as in you choose which your existing charas you put to your free slots). Includes locked races. Think it was on the official forum month or 2 ago.

That would be all I'd need to play again for as long as the story content lasted.

Been playing since launch and don't plan to stop playing. Love the game and I hope F2P brings a lot of new people.

We don't have a definitive answer but I can pretty much guarantee you that you'll still be able to play those characters. You'll have the restriction on new characters though.

Ah - Tera, yes I do remember playing it but the experience was so damn forgettable that I forgot it even existed. I'm afraid without decent lore to flesh the landscape out then it's really hard to remember great looking environments.

Good question, I spent 1.5 mil or so credits to make my agent Mirialan, hope he doesn't get converted to something else.

As a former subscriber, I'll pick it up here and there for free to play. SWTOR was a very fun game, they just really butchered their end game content. The gameplay, the questing, the world, the art is all great; they just put all of their resources into the "Legacy System" post launch. This royally screwed them over as no one really cared much about alts, everyone just wanted new content. WoW will still be my primary, SWTOR still hasn't come close to it's features, depth, and complexity :/.

Guys, it's just like TF2. If you make ANY purchase on the store, you become a "premium" user(note: not subscriber.) Becoming a "premium" user gives you access to sprint, the ability to equip purple gear, access to your cargo bay(bank), secure trading among players, and increased access to chat(whatever that means). It could require as little as a one time expenditure of a dollar to permanently gain access to those features. I really don't understand all the confusion about that. No subscription is needed for those features. Now warzones however...

Also, for what it's worth, I hated the concept of MMO's prior to playing this. It is close enough to being KOTOR 3 that is well worth experiencing. I have now been playing since launch. You really have nothing to lose by giving it a shot, other then the opportunity cost of what the 30gb download could be used on otherwise. The majority of the class stories are very good, and any fan of the KOTOR series owes it to themselves to try this out, and judge it objectively for yourself rather then rely on the opinions of others.

Free to play restrictions has been updated.

And its bad, very bad. Quite frankly the WORST Free to play conversion ever.

http://dulfy.net/2012/10/24/swtor-f...gn=swtor-free-to-play-ftp-player-restrictions

A lot of it is typical but the stand outs among the bad is access to only 1 hot bar and only 3 loot rolls per week in Flashpoints(yes, if you roll on an item and lose that counts as 1 roll for the week).

The TORtanic just struck a second iceberg.

Only 1 hotbar? Rofl, why?

As others have mentioned, it might be worth it for the story bits, but it's a pain having to go through all the MMO grind to progress the story. Played 3 weeks when I first bought it, the game did nothing special or memorable. It's a mystery to me why they thought they can succeed with "WoW in space" in 2011, esp. when WoW does things a lot better.

Holy crap. Wow. That's...wow.

Fuck that.

1 hotbar? Really?

Locking out content is fine but it's pretty stupid to mess with the UI and ruin the playability of your game.

EA really has no clue. There are so many F2P out there that are very successful they could model their program after. LOTRO handles it quite well and makes a lot of money. Instead they have gone full on stupid mode and then lifted the random loot box shit that Star trek online loves to do.

I won't play this, even though I liked KOTOR. Reason being there's too many games I HAVE put money into. Anyone else find that to be a problem as well? Why spend time playing a free game when I have a huge Steam backlog? It's a strange quandary.

my question is: are these changes significant enough for you to finally make the jump? i'm definitely interested. might jump in just to see the story once.

Nope, already played it and stopped. Hell, looking at the F2P restrictions, why bother?!
I thought 50 slots in the auction house was bad when I was playing, but 2 for F2P players? Damn.

lol apparently people playing on the test server report by the time you hit level 10. the quest rewards are of a rarity level that you have to buy them with cartel coins to even get mission rewards.

I mean holy shit this is fail

Here's a list of things You can buy via Cartel Coins
http://dulfy.net/2012/10/23/swtor-cartel-market-items/

You can basically unlock everything, from purple items, to bank slots and quick bars.
My friend told me that he used only two quick bars.

Weekly passes cost 240 CC
One new Quick Bar cost 250 CC

Dunno what people expected really from Bioware, they still has 500k subscribers, if they've done it other way, they would lose like 90% of them, so they would lose money.
Now its all about Cartel Coins pricing. If 10$ means 1000 CC, it will be really nice system.

The system seems fair if they don't require you to buy a box copy at all. Are they?

Nope, You wont need a box.

Um.

I don't think Bioware realizes what the point of F2P is.

Or You dont realize what business is.

Really instead of hating it, just think about it for a second people, because everything they've done is completely logical and predictable.
Expecting it to be completely F2P like League of Legends or Path of Exile was illogical.

None of it is logical or predictable, because none of it makes sense compared to competing products in the F2P MMO market. I'm not comparing it to League of Legends, I'm comparing it to other retail WoW-style MMOs that have since gone Free to Play.

Rule 1: You have to make it fun for free players. Locking down the hotbar and severely limiting the player in what they can do is a real good way to drive free players away from the game instead of into the cash shop.

Problem is that you actually can't buy everything. Lot of things are being held back for subscribers. Like AoC shitty f2p they are just trying to push people to sub instead of depending on microtransactions. Often you can buy what you want and enjoy the game, but even with microtransactions with how they are doing TOR, you will have to pay weekly fees for access permissions and various features are being made subscriber exclusive.

I enjoyed the beta (in terms of story) so sure why not? I haven't burned out on the Bioware narrative template so it's good.
