Cheapy is horrible at running a site. I got banned from the site a year or so ago for no reason (that's what it tells me when I log in) and I try every thing to contact him and the mods and guess what...my IP address gets banned! I'm not shocked that Cheapy banned Tony, I'm sure he was jealous of Tony

Cheapy didn't ban Tony, NeoGaf did.

You seem to have your facts confused.

Tony should have known that shit wouldn't fly.

I mean, damn how could you write that up thinking you wouldn't get banned for doing so?

huh, Cheapy didn't ban Tony

Games journalism is shit you say? Why do you think that is?

Put two and two together.
Well it's my opinion but games journalism is shit because:

1. none of them are critical enough of what they're reviewing. I imagine they just rub their $$$ on their nuts and roll their face on the keyboard and call it a day, especially since most of that money was because they wanted you to write a positive review instead of a critical one (which is why places like RPS rules)
2. Being redundant, they're too biased to the game.

Those are my reasons anyways

Darn it.

I like Tony, and his deals are often awesome. Will visit CAG once in a while to check up on deals then.

Forum sites that gives you the freedom to make signatures annoy the hell out of me though. There's too much noise.

You realize this, and yet you don't realize the implications of publishers essentially buying Official Threads on GAF. The two are one and the same.

Oh btw, since the deal is still up NFS The Run is a darn good game for $5 (I got it when it dropped to this price recently). I wish there was a better one coming out with the idea of driving across America. All while going through the storm segments I was begging for a tornado. Living in Mississippi some of the races felt like home (not many games do that for me so that was awesome). I bet this game would be remind a lot of people of their locations. Usually it's just people that live in the big cities that get that feeling (like people that mention GTA3 reminded them of home).

Also I kind of agree with the guy on the last page. It's not that there shouldn't be company bias, there should be company interaction. It was a boon to have tony's help, and we're all poorer for it, no matter what forum it is that he posts on.

You realize this, and yet you don't realize the implications of publishers essentially buying Official Threads on GAF. The two are one and the same.
If the people making the OP or anyone was PAID for making the op. Then no, THAT IS WRONG.

If it was just a matter of being able to contact the publishers for data that makes it easier to make a cooler looking op with better info, THAT IS OKAY.

Come on, guys. We don't need a cross-forum war. Let's stop fanning flames re CAG.

CAG vs GAF gang war

video game forums are going the way of 90s rap music :p

I've been on the fence about grabbing this and I think your post sold me on it

I'm sure publisher's involvement in the video game journalism industry started just as innocently.

CAG is getting pretty mad. Talking about stalinist moderation or some shit.

As far as I'm aware, its pretty hard to get banned on gaf as long as you don't attack other posters, don't post racist comments, don't make gender comments, and etc.

edit

rofl some posters on CAG are so bad. FGC-gaf is where its at anyways =P

Don't worry guys, my Dragon Age 3 OT (and any other OTs I have reserved) will be banner less, only contain relevant pictures, and completely devoid of hype.

I liked the FFXIII OT, that was darn creative. Even though I didn't get the game I read over the stuff and continued to realize it wasn't the FF for me :(

Then leave.

Pardon me, owner of this site holding the thread attached to the Sword of Damocles positioned over my head, but I really wasn't directing that comment towards you at all. :|

Assuming that you are really are mistakenly or intentionally taking mik83kuu's position as mirroring your own feelings though, and assuming that maybe knowing that I might have a ban coming for this, might I finally ask the question, before the thread snaps, why was he allowed to be here in any aspect previously if this issue of "ethics" is defined as regarding paid employees of retailers, or anyone else professionally related to products in question, being involved in any way with promoting or mentioning their own products in any capacity whatsoever? Is there not already some leeway being given towards people if they are open about their connections and if they adhere to the TOS? I simply don't feel that mik83kuu's position IS actually mirroring the TOS, you, or that it is ultimately beneficial to the community in that regard.

We already have retailer/digital distribution/product specific threads, if the developer or official rep from any of them shows up to give help, take requests, or promote a sale of their product, is that now an ethical issue and strictly forbidden? That is what I took issue with. The other issue regarding his new thread I didn't specifically comment on other than pointing out the larger beneficial aspects to what Tony has been doing, and my hope that he would be cut some slack. I have to say that out of all the retailer/digital distribution threads, this one was especially nice and beneficial given his involvement. That is all.

Please attach more threads to the sword.

Well that stinks about Tony. He was fairly helpful with customer service related things beyond just posting about deals.

Anyway, Dark Souls for $20 on Sunday! Now I just need to get a controller for my PC...

Simply no reason to not have PM'd a mod about this before hand. It makes me believe he simply didn't know about PMs, but he may have. I don't know.

At the end of the day, though, he's still on CAG. We still have a direct line of contact, just have to dust off the old CAG account whenever I have a question for him, no biggie.

I know Tony meant well but he was treated like any other poster (who had access to publishers) would in that situation. You don't read the rules, you get banned.

Time to add CAG back into my bookmarks, I suppose.

Shouldn't be a permaban -- it's not like he was being underhanded about it. He was being entirely transparent and thought he would be helping GAF.

But it is what it is. I never visit any other forum so I'll just have to rely on Nelo Ice and you fine folks.

He does. I've sent him PM's before and he's asked people to PM about issues or questions. He definitely knew.

Sorry for the OT reply.

They are discouraged from making topics about their stuff. I was surprised to see JStevenson post a thread on something Insomniac once but he was given permission I believe.

While he may have meant well, posting it publicly undermines Evilore's authority by encouraging the public to contest a rule in the ToS.

Don't know but if they do would you mind letting me know? I would love to get the game too.

I'm going to miss Tony and his bag of Amazon sales :( ... But going by GAF's TOS, it was a fair banning. He should've proposed his idea to one of the moderators in private before jumping to the creation of that thread.

Tony said on CAG that they are moving their deal up to next week. So Walking Dead should be $15 on Amazon next week.

This and Dark Souls shall be mine...

I can understand if this is the strict line in the sand, unless specifically agreed to by a admin who allows it for some reason. mik83kuu seemed to be against ANY "marketer post marketing on Gaf" and "what would Gaf turn into if every publisher and retailer had their own Gaf 'personas' posting glorified ads.". Is that really the line in the sand ethically?? How about indie developers, or anyone else professionally connected to a service or product? That was my point. I would prefer a measured approach that allowed for the greatest possible benefit to the users, part of which would allow for official reps to provide info and help out with their own services and products in the threads specifically designated for them. I don't think that crosses any ethical boundaries.

He broke the rules so the punishment is warranted but it's still a bummer and we're losing something substantial in the name of protecting OTs, which are already very close to PR dumps.

im reading the official guidelines evilore set out and cant find "must only contain vital information" anywhere. as for nobody reads them, didnt know your opinion represented the whole of gaf.

some people prefer a lot of info, some people prefer simplicity, both are acceptable under the new rules. its obvious you prefer the latter, no need to shout about it in the hopes that all ot's will conform to your tastes -
they wont

On the Gaming Forum, Official Threads (designated with |OT|) serve specifically to contain the at-release and post-release discussion for a game, with the original post in the thread providing information about the game. The key word here is discussion, though. They are not intended to be marketing websites, hype-building or fellating as a result of the highs of the PR hype cycle, or all-encompassing megathreads for news.

When you create an official thread for a game, ideally after notifying the rest of the community here (especially for major releases so that you don't step on toes), you should follow these rules:

-Do not be affiliated in any way with the game in question, whether as a developer, publisher, or marketer.

-Do not exceed one post in length unless you have a very good reason to.

-Focus on presenting the facts in a clear and concise manner. You can be stylish, but avoid being bloated, in formatting or bandwidth usage.

-Avoid letting hype distort your perspective. Don't fellate the game in the thread title or otherwise, doubly so if its marketing budget is reminiscent of Apple's bank statement. It doesn't need it, and you'll come off as a viral.

-Don't post your official thread more than seven days prior to its game's release (excepting multiplayer-centric games with large-scale long-term open betas, like Dota 2, which are addressed individually). |OT|s are not for news, so they have no reason to exist while we're still in the news cycle.

-Satirical |OT|s can be acceptable, but whether you get a lock will be on a case-by-case basis.

but I'm not even sure what you're trying to say. I was responding to some other poster that reading the OP in most OTs is completely unnecessary if you want to participate and that's a simple truth.

Probably for the best. The publishers really wouldn't be willing to give information to OT creators that they don't give to the press so there isn't really a point to having access directly to devs. It just makes for horrible bloated OT's that I rail against any chance I get because they're horrible.
Bloated OTs were really besides the point. I think Evi came down so hard because it was basically putting plans into motion that would allow a publisher PR consortium to control content on the front page. Which probably sounds more sinister than what Tony had in mind, but that's what it appears to be on the surface. At a time when PR control over the press is a hot button issue.

It was the wrong thread in the wrong place at the wrong time from the wrong poster.

You missed one.

Read the updated clarification thread pertaining to OTs
Satirical |OT|s can be acceptable, but whether you get a lock will be on a case-by-case basis.
Posts have a character limit of 24,000 (including spaces). Splitting into multiple posts is permissable.

That's from the |OT| OT in community posted by Nemesis.

That's from the |OT| OT in community posted by Nemesis. EvilLore approved.

and people get around that by posting text as image files.

again, I was responding to someone who said not reading an OP is a bannable offense while I sure as hell won't take a day off to read PR just to participate.

Fair enough, I was just pointing it out; I agree that there are some OTs that can go overboard. But I think it should be left to the discretion of the creator. There's obviously information that could be pertinent. In my Demons/Dark Souls OTs I wanted to have a fair amount of media, and a few bits of information for new players.

the borderlands 2 thread is not bloated.

this is what a "bloated" ot looks like, and under the new rules we wont see them again

Holy shit I missed that Mortal Kombat one. Sixteen posts, how did fernoca manage to get them all in a row!? Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread specifically any longer.

Holy shit, those are some bloated OTs.

I'll easily squeeze the Dragon Age 3 OT into a single page, and probably use less than 5 pictures all-in-all.
