Green Man Gaming Thread: Save some green, man

GMG rocks for preorders.
Indeed it does. Anyone figured out their business model yet? Operating at a loss while attracting customers and being shielded by VC thus going for the long run or...? I honestly don't get it. I got Dishonored for 37.5EUR from GMG while that same game costs 50 EUR on Steam. Do they get their Steam keys from the publishers directly or from Steam? Questions, questions...

I imagine GMG just takes a smaller cut.

Publishers, of course.

Hmm I pre-ordered Bioshock yesterday and choosed the 15$ credit but didn't get it on my profile. Do you only get it when the game comes out or it's supposed to be added when you make the pre-order?

I got a reply to my ticket - says the credit won't be applied until te game is released. Vaguely annoying, but oh well.

Ugh...ok. I wish they were more clear about that. They already can't cancel the order since they gave you the pre-order flash game code right away. It's stupid that they wait for the credit.

Damn. In some cases it can be argued that pre-ordering is useless.

But at that cheap price with $15 credit, its hard not to.

GMG is king of pre orders and will continue to get my business.

As for their business model, they take a much smaller cut of the sale, but they make their profit off the volume of their orders and small overhead.

From what I've been able to gather, they are a fairly small operation, but have been able to gather a pretty large and loyal following.

Steam can basically charge so much because they are steam, I don't want to go too much into that but they have a pretty good grip on the market

Do GMG actually make a profit? I always assumed that they were operating at a loss to gain market share. These price cuts seem impossible to work with given the narrow margins I've been told about for games.

Gain market share of what? I don't imagine there are a ton of people buying games from them outside of the huge sales they have on Steamworks games and MMORPGs.

Digital distribution commonly uses a 30% margin and pretty much all of their pre-release sales fall within that range.

I'm not sure what's confusing about that. In a broad sense the more people that buy Steamworks games from GMG, the less people there are buying them from other places, and thus they have gained a larger part of the market. The fact that they're using other companies' DRM, software, or servers doesn't really matter if the money is going into GMG's pockets.

Don't forget that GMG doesn't just sell Steam keys. They also sell games for direct download through their Capsule client (which - sadly - sucks).

I feel bad for GMG. It seems like the only sales they make are for Steam keys on which they potentially lose money for selling them so cheap. Plus the free games that get traded back in for a profit.

Wonder what happened to the FarCry 3 page..?! I remember them running a deal in the summer(that I regret not doing) and now its nowhere to be seen.

As far as I know, the Steamworks policy is basically...
Developers get: access to Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, etc
Valve gets: game requires Steam

I think Valve does not get a cut of Steamworks games sold through other vendors.

Valve Steamworks webpage said:
It’s free: There’s no charge for bandwidth, updating, or activation of copies at retail or from third-party digital distributors.

Guys we need a new voucher!! I want to buy NFS MW. Are there any right now? Or any planned. Pretty please GMG if you are reading this. :)

It sucks because I'm one day too late. -_-

Does anyone know if you get the Sniper Challenge for Hitman Absolution off of GMG? It's only 45 right now and you get either a 10 dollar credit or 7 dollars cash back. It would also be nice if anyone has a voucher for this month.

Unless codes are magically not working on Hitman anymore (I never do know with this site now), wait for the next 25% off coupon. They've offered Hitman for $33 a bunch of times over the last few months so I'm sure they'll do it again.

I really just want to know if the GMG version comes with the sniper challenge. The game doesn't release for a month so I'm fine with waiting for the coupon.

for those of you that want the Hitman Sniper Challenge i have 1 code i want to get rid of for $2.00 paypal - its redeemable towards any version ps3/xbox/pc

How is it redeemable for any version? I'll take it if it's actually redeemable on pc

The code you get has to be registered on the official website where they ask you which platform you will play on. Then you can get a separate key to actually unlock the Sniper Challenge for your platform of choice.

I bought it on GMG and got the Sniper Challenge, so that should be a yes.

I bought Hitman when they started this credit/cash back deal and I did not receive the Sniper Challenge (USA here).

You would, or should, have received a code to redeem at http://www.hitmansniper.com/redeem

They've stated in the past that due to another outlet already having exclusivity, no one in the US would be getting Sniper Challenge codes.

Sucks.

Everyone who was eligible to receive a copy of Sniper Challenge from Green Man Gaming, should now have a key for Sniper Challenge in their account (check your Keys section for Hitman Absolution in your account).

As an important note, this does not apply to any North American orders. Another company secured an exclusive deal to distribute Sniper Challenge in this region, as such there is nothing we can do.

So is voucher-age over? Now it's all credit or cash back it seems. Ah, well, it was nice while it lasted.
Wouldn't be surprised if the floodgates opened with 2K putting the foot down, THEN making that compromise.

And if they realiably took payment options I'd probably stick with them anyway on PC games I want to pre-order, but it sounds like sometimes they just won't accept anything unless you make a new account, so screw it.

Those 20% and 25% off vouchers did the job of getting their name out there, though. New release games for $34 is insane, no way they could have kept it up. Good on them.
