Need For Speed Most Wanted - PC Performance Thread

Does this even look any better than HP? Wonder how it performs on AMD.

AMD 6850 here. Game seems to hold steady around 60 most of the time, but I have really dire dips to the 20s in certain areas, mostly tunnels and dirt roads. This is with everything maxed, except AO, which I have on medium.

I also unlocked the game early trough FlyVPN and got a decent rig i think, but the performance is really weird on this game.

I5 2500k @ 3.30Ghz
8 GB
MSI GTX 670 Power Edition 2GB

Running the game @ 1920x1200 and most of the time it runs at 60fps. But there are some parts in the city that really make it drop to ~35-40 fps.

Turning the reflections down 1 step already improved the stability of the framerate. But I sure hope they do some more optimization.

What type of CPU do you have? Intel or AMD? I'm really surprised considering you have a 7970 too.
my CPU is definitely the weakest link in my PC. Its a core 2 extreme q6850 at a shade over 3 GHz. Like I say though perfmon tells me that it isn't maxing out any of my cores, so I'm not sure what the deal is with hot pursuit, but it certainly has me antsy about most wanted.

It also has me antsy about upgrading my mobo and CPU. I'd hate to upgrade it and have the same performance still. Also i have money earmarked for other stuff right now.

Anyone try using 1280x720 or similar resolution? I used to do that with my geforce 460 sometimes so I wouldn't have to turn down graphic options.
For those with framerate issues, apparently there's a way to lock the game to run at a (more fluid) 30 FPS.
Edit the file C:\Users\******\Documents\Criterion Games\Need For Speed(TM) Most Wanted\ config.NFS13Save' setting the LockTo30 value to true.

Might as well buy the X360 version and call it a day huh?
Better yet just get Forza Horizon.

Playing this game at 30fps on a GTX5xx or higher is an absolute travesty.
Disgraceful port honestly.

Will wait for patch version 1.stable.

This is really disappointing. Was going to pick up the PC version but reading the thread, my GTX460 will probably cry at the thought of running it with anything approaching decent settings.

did notebook-gaf try to play this game already?

after reading these impressions, I'm not willing to blind buy. Although all settings on low still looks good, and a decent laptop GPU should at least be able to turn high res textures on, or possibly some of the reflections (to get wet roads at least)

This is why all PC games should have demos, but also probably why some PC games will never get demos.

is there an option to force DX9 mode, or will it automatically use DX11 if it detects a compatible card?

It will automagically turn on DX11.

High-res textures BTW will make little to no difference for performance as it's all about the VRAM. It's geometry detail that's the real problem, perhaps suggesting that a ton of non-visible detail is being drawn, killing performance.

That's not good if true. I've seen enough and read enough to warrant this is a flawed port in terms of tech. After Criterion got their last 2 games on PC flawlessly, I'm really disappointed to read about the performance.

Burnout Paradise had shitty AO implementation that hurt performance with no real visual benefit, and Hot Pursuit had zero graphical options to tweak and was pretty poorly optimized.

The magic of Frostbite 2.

It's not Frostbite 2. It's the Chameleon engine just like Hot Pursuit.

I also agree that Geometry Detail is the enemy here. It seems that the game is rendering more than it's being displayed on-screen.

To give Criterion some credit, the light casting effects when getting later in the day, with shadows casting everywhere is pretty impressive. More funny is that it seems to be way more GPU intensive than other sections of the game where I get lower FPS.

Which idiot website propagated the idea that the game is running on Frostbite 2?

I've done a ton of screenshot comparisons, and I have to say, I struggle to detect any meaningful visual difference between High and Low.

I have both and know of the issues. 60fps is 60fps and I could add good AA via RadeonPro to both and retain 60fps. AO in BP is garbage, I admit that. It didn't hurt performance at all though so unless you have lower than a 6970 (my GPU) I suspect that might be the performance issue with AO.

so its a shitty port? sucks, I really loved Most Wanted when it dropped in 05. broke my 360 in with dozens and dozens of hours on that game.

Apparently using the tip in the OP can lock the game at 30fps. Most of the dips I've read were drastic and in one video I saw last night, it was VERY jarring. Almost seemed like it was lower than 30fps on some of the drops.

I can't see myself even trying to buy this in this state or until I get a 680 and even that has frame dips. Crazy talk to me. They should have got the streaming in right. They did it with Burnout Paradise and I realize this is more of a looker but still. We have powerful rigs on PC that should churn right through this game.

I couldn't get 60fps with my 6950 in Hot Pursuit no matter what I tried. I'd lock it to 30 and force SSAA instead. I am able to get 60fps with my GTX 670. Most Wanted is a disappointing release, for sure.

Crazy there. Maybe the fact that I have that 6970 OC'd helps too alongside my CPU @4.8ghz.

I assume you're having the odd drops at certain points even with your 670? Reading about 680's struggling is rather disappointing.

Theres some sort of dynamic v-sync going on. I played for about an hour last night, at max settings and got 60 with the suspected dips. Booted up today and its locked 30. doesnt move. Played for about 30min. Game jumps back up to 60. Framerate is all over the place for no reason.

2600K @ 4.5/ GTX570 SLI / 8GB ram. Playing at 1920x1080.

Edit: I did add 16xAF through Inspector this morning.

The 310 beta drivers do have a profile. It uses The Run's SLI bits. Dunno if it'll work. But yeah, I'm having drops at max settings to 45fps. It's jaggy as hell, too. so even when I do get 60fps it's ugly.

That just sounds like triple buffering isn't working.

It's locked to one GPU in the profile, undoubtedly because it's CPU limited and using SLI would only lower framerates further.

wow. that's taking give no fucks porting to another level. and it doesnt even look all that hot maxed out, right?

Ok the game applies a Vsync without triple buffering (60, 30fps) when you first launch the game. Once you alt-tab tho, at least for me, either a magical triple buffering appears OR Vsync disappear and some magical framerate limiter appears.

How?! I tried it back then and no matter what settings I chose, AA wouldn't work at all. In the end I settled with FXAA/SMAA. I think there was a catalyst, 10.11 or earlier that worked with MSAA, but a later catalyst release broke it. Now I have the latest 12.11 Beta 4 installed. Currently re-downloading NFSHP, because I did a fresh install of Win7 on my SSD.

I think the performance problems are due to a frame limiter. I just tried it again and during the car intro it's 60, the second the camera pulls back behind the car it locks to 30.

This wasnt happening when i tried it last night.

Edit: Just got about 3 min of locked 60. Crashed and it locked it to 30 after the little cut scene.

Did Paradise have similar issues, and were they eventually resolved?

I bought the last Hot Pursuit and it had huge problems with my AMD card at the time (several effects weren't showing up like rain and snow). Eventually they patched it, but even though the patch said it fixed these issues on AMD cards I still didn't have the effects.

I thought that now that I had an NVidia card I wouldn't have issues with the new game and the engine.

Looks like Criterion really shit the bed on this one.

Yep, just finished downloading NFSHP and forcing AA via Radeonpro doesn't work, unless you're using MLAA...

I know this is a performance thread, but since this is a PC thread I just wanted to throw my Origin info out there so I can have some dudes to compete/play with.

And yeah, the performance is a huge bummer. Frame rate drops as low as 35 FPS on a GTX 690 with i5 2500k @ 4.0 GHz. I just locked the frame rate at 30 FPS with the config edit. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Think I'll hold off playing the game until there's an SLI profile at least. Then my cards can brute force the game instead.

I added you and everyone from the Origin NFS list. Quote to reveal the links.

Bit disappointed by Jeff Gerstmann's review: http://www.giantbomb.com/need-for-speed-most-wanted/61-38497/reviews/

The Xbox 360 version of the game is a little hitchy, with an unstable frame rate that takes supreme dives whenever there are a lot of cop cars on-screen. It also looks a little blurry at the horizon, which in a game where dodging oncoming traffic at insane speeds is the order of the day can cause some issues of its own. The PC version, predictably, has none of these issues. It looks great at high resolutions and, assuming you've got a machine that can handle it, the frame rate is terrific.

Five minutes of game time reveals the problems we're all discussing.

Isn't Criterion well known for its customer service post launch? Are they reachable by Twitter or something like that? I mean, there's gotta be at least some information about this problem on PCs and a time frame to fix it.
