Square Enix Member Survey-What qualities do you like most about Lightning?

Honestly, Square--this is just embarrassing.

How far the once mighty have fallen.

That her story is almost over? Seriously I don't mind lightning, but the milking is getting annoying. I want a new FF hero. How about an older male? Its always young male or female.

LOL, what?

Square only had four mainline female main characters, Terra (FF6), Yuna (FF10-2), Serah (FF13-2) and Lightning (FF13). In each game they had to share the spotlight with male characters and had reduced roles compared to final fantasy male leads like Cloud, Squall, and Tidus.

What SquareEnix needs is a GOOD female lead, not someone like Lightning. I would prefer a game with a lead with a personality of Tifa or Ashe that actually is the central character instead of being a supporting character that is the face of the game like said four female characters.

Well, not all women can model men's clothing. Is that a good quality?

Japanese Squall acted a bit differently than poorly translated English Squall.

I was reading somewhere that the English translation is partly to blame for that, mainly for translating a lot of his sarcastic remarks as "Whatever." I have a feeling Neku from The World Ends With You is probably closer to how he was supposed to come off.

I think it's pretty telling that the other characters have their personality traits exaggerated when they make crossover appearances, but Squall is actually toned down.

Well, that certainly would explain some of it.

A few weeks ago I got a little over halfway through FFXIII before getting distracted by XCOM and Dishonored and other games.

I found myself really liking Lightning throughout what I played. I was always rooting for her and choosing her as my party leader. I hated Snow just like she did.

Then, at some point, I actually stopped and started thinking, "what exactly do I even like about this character?". I couldn't think of any answers except "she's cool and harsh" and "she looks awesome". In the twenty hours I'd known her, she had taken a total of zero steps toward any kind of character change, I still had trouble remembering what her motive was, and she was still acting like an asshole to these people she had been through so much with.

I generally love Renegade Shepard type characters like Lightning, so I really, really want to like Lightning. But Square never gives you real reasons to like her, there's nothing that makes her a character and not just an archetype.

Lightning's failing as a character is the opposite of someone like Vanille or Snow early on, where you definitely don't want to like them, but they have enough genuine character that you can choose to either like them or hate them, like a real person. Lightning draws you in with her mystery and toughness (and looks, let's be honest) but never does anything to you once you're drawn in. She's a character I desperately want to like as a person, but she never does anything a person would do, and so I just don't care about her at all, and that's the worst thing a character can be.

It's the fact that I really don't care about Lightning or what happens to her that is one of the main reasons I got so easily distracted by other games.

Well when her character development regarding her parent's death was elegantly told in a manner of "I messed up" clearly she deserves to be cared about.

I prefer a brutal sword impaling by GILGAMESH but that's me

She is one of SE's more aesthetically pleasing characters but her personality is one of the worst. Hated her in Dissidia Duodecim.

That she's strong and cool, but still has her insecurities.
Best female character Square ever created, by far.

^ Well, almost the best female character for me. I think Yuna is tied with Lightning up there.

Who is worst, Squall or Lightning?

Squall by a landslide. Cool design but I hate his character. Actually, I don't care much for any of FFVIII's cast of characters in hindsight except for Zell and Selphie.

Now Lightning on the other hand, she is a cool and attractive individual that lays down the whoopass. She isn't an asshole like Squall either. Also, she got those Warrior Goddess powers. Overall, she's like a Japanese interpretation of the awesome Xena the Warrior Princess. Impossible for me to hate her but I understand why a few might not like her.

I think lightning is pretty cool, and it looks looks awesome! I have seen some pretty impressive photographs that capture some insane lightning.

My response.

"Lightning needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine.
Two, whenever Lightning's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Lightning"?
Three--"

God, they're using the same damn logic that SEGA did for Shadow Poochie the Hedgehog.

I liked Paine too. Feel like one of the few who does. :(
When I first played FFX-2 when I was 15 or so my mom came to watch the OP and really liked Paine's hair.

Funny story: When I was watching Advent Children, my mom saw Kadaj's hair and remarked that she "liked that woman's hairstyle", lol.

Lightning need more Ultros action.

ULTROS!
People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to tentacle sex Lighting and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

... HAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahaHAHAHAHA. Oh, wait, you're serious? Let me laugh even harder.

Someone obviously hasn't played Parasite Eve 1/2 and then had Square take a humongous dump on their face with their best female/strong-leading-lady character after a decade of waiting. >:I

As for Square asking about Light: I like the fact that... uh... um... she's female... I guess? She really has no redeeming qualities and I honestly wanted to like her in the run-up to FF13. But after playing that, she's just kinda "dead/flat" in the character department.

Shadow. They brought him back from the dead in Sonic Heroes because people resonated with the character so much, and then gave him his own game called "Shadow the Hedgehog" which played differently from some other Sonic games because you now had access to guns and crap... and you had different ending to pursue, etc.

Her looks. And punching Snow.

That aside, isn't the whole thing a "how awesome is your game" or "your campaign has the momentum of a runaway train"?

The few qualities that I did like about Lightning wouldn't even matter to SE anyway. They'd probably respond with 'hey that's great, but isn't she a badass?!?! You love that she's a badass, right?!?'. Blah.

It's crazy to think that when Lightning Returns releases, she'll either have leading roles or major appearances in FIVE Final Fantasy titles on store shelves. That's bonkers.

Trying to say Lightning is SE's Shadow huh? :P

Techincally, they didn't really dump all over Aya. It just looked like they did for like 98% of the game. Damn, 3rd Birthday was such shit.

I think they want Lightning to be the next GILGAMESH and become a recurring character in the lamest way possible.

Technically, they didn't really dump all over Aya. It just looked like they did for like 98% of the game. Damn, 3rd Birthday was such shit.

Announce the return of Aya Brea, play as Eve the whole game.

yo brofist. a lot happened to her so Light was a bit of a bitch, but then she realized that it was her own insecurities making her lash out so she mellowed out. totally agree that she's the best Square female.

Yuna >>>>> Lightning

Also, plz Yuna and Ultros action in Dissidia 3.

It follows such a similar formula that I can't help but to laugh to myself and draw comparisons to both Poochie and Shadow.

God, Parasite Eve 1 was so good. Aya was fantastic.

Yuna >>>>> Lightning

FFX HD. :P

As someone who actually (kind of) liked the last ten hours of FFXIII, I'm still struggling to think of a defining character trait for Lightning. She is a stern expression with legs. For some characters in fiction this works, because they become a cipher for the viewer to enter (see: Indiana Jones and The Man with No Name), but Lightning is just... blank.

That she's strong and cool, but still has her insecurities.
Best female character Square ever created, by far.

Fran, Ashe, Agrias, Lucca, Schala, Faris. I could go on, but these characters actually show emotion, are cool, are useful to the plot beyond being a Mary Sue or a main romantic interest, and exhibit development that actually engages the player. I wish I could say the same for Lightning, but maybe I'm missing something, or maybe it's just different strokes.

Lightning best female character created by square? WAT!?

That would be Ashe from FFXII

Fuck the haters.

Well, she is one of the hotter ones with that tight mini skirt.

It follows such a similar formula that I can't help but to laugh to myself and draw comparisons to both Poochie and Shadow.
It sucks that they wont show any of the negative comments on the site as I'm sure there would be more positive ones. I guess I got more faith in their character than they do. :P

God, Parasite Eve 1 was so good. Aya was fantastic.

FFX HD. :P

You like Aya Brea too? You good people.
