$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

Did you make those up?

*check head-fi*

Well.... shit. And Fang says the 600 is only $399 oh man. This means the 272 is probably going to have it's price cut nearly in half, but then I won't have dat flagship. Decisions.

I'm not sure if I recall correctly but there was a review on a Chinese blog that HeadphoneAddict wrote where the RE600 was compared more to stuff like the K3003 and custom IEMs so... Yeah. HA's heard virtually everything under the sun, so I wouldn't even bother with the 272 if you could swing the cash. [enabler]What's $150 more? [/enabler]

I just got my EarPods in the mail, and I'm VERY impressed. They're a huge upgrade from my old apple earbuds and I almost want to say that they sound better than my Yuin PK3's (which broke awhile ago. so goddamned flimsy..)

Also the volume/song control is a godsend. My quality of life has increased substantially

How much are the RE400s slated to be?

After a day of use and gaming I'm very happy with the Sennheiser 280 pros. I was originally just going to get some sort of headset like turtlebeach or whatever but I'm glad I went this route. They sound great and I'm not restricted to PC only USB headset.

They haven't set a price yet, but the RE600 is set in stone at $399, with the RE272 and RE262 still at $249 and $149, so something has to give.

Seeing how they've already dropped the RE-ZERO from $99 to $56, I'll blindly wager the RE262 falls to $99, so the RE272 can rest at $149, and the RE400 will be in that $249 range.

They'd really be shaking up the IEM landscape.

I've just ordered these (AKG K450) for 59.9 €, for outdoor use. Are they good or should I cancel the order while I still can?

I have the AKG Q460, which are basically the same only endorsed by Quince Jones (+ some minor improvements). I love them for daily use. Never leave the house without them.

RE400 are mine

I am looking for some help for a friend, he is on a fairly low budget, around $50. Wants in ear and listens to metal. Anything good within that budget? Thanks again!

Well, my SONY MDR V6 got killed by my Pitbull and I try a bunch of brands, even the overprice jumpoffs, but nothing comes close to my babies :( Tried the germans, not the same. What comes close in style and warmth?

I've been fishing in ATH AD700 lake and there's no bass here. I'm plenty comfortable, though.

In the same price range? Get another pair of V6s. Otherwise, what's your budget?

I've been using the Audio Technica ATH A900s. They're great but lack bass.

I'm wondering if the M50s would be a good counterpart to the A900s, bass-wise? I'm thinking of getting a second pair (one for work, one for home) and I'd like something with a lot more bass.

The M50s bass is present, but not exactly mindblowing whatsoever. It is definitely over appreciated, and lacks true impact. M-Audio Q40s, would be a much much better choice, especially if you can get your finds on a small amp.

+1 for the Q40s, wonderful cans especially amped.

The M50s have slam but no rumble, the Q40s bring both and throw in fantastic (for the price) extension and a nice smooth midrange.

I've got a question for those more knowledgeable on the subject:

Say I bought a 7.1 enabled soundcard and buy a pair of Q701's and got a O2 headphone amp to drive that.. will I be able to hear 7.1 through the headphones?

Thanks

My shitty, overpriced Bose earbuds just kicked the bucket, and I need to replace them immediately. Are the recommendations in the OP still relevant, or are there better, unlisted sub-$30 earbuds?

Edit: m9 or m6?!

Edit 2: I got the m9s :)

Yes.

What are the best options for Grado pads that will keep them from killing my ears during long-term listening? I remember LC posted something a few months back, but can't find the post.

you rang?

ttvjaudio.com

flat pads. 35 bucks. they spread the pressure across a larger surface area of the ear and eliminates thin pressure points. it works for me.

note that they will change the sound compared to the bowls since the drivers are way closer to the ear.

you can also get some sennheiser 414 pads (those yellow ones) and pop them on. very comfy but they're super porous so bass just leaks right out.

edit. saw your post. corrected URL

That's them, thanks!

Google "TTVJ," ttvj.com is an auto blog :)

Fellow Headphone gaffers: I spent a few hours in the last few days browsing some headphones forums, in English and in French, looking for the 'best songs to listen to with your set up?', just out of curiosity, and god I just came to realize I am not an audiophile, I just love music.

Thousands of boring and vulgar electronic music (and I LOVE electronic music, just more into warp than into goa trance horrible emotionless beats), and boring performance music/bad prog rock (stuff like super good guitarists/drummers, and again I LOVE Stevie Ray Vaughan, but those Ingwie Malmsteen-esque stuff they listen to is appalling.. Sorry if you are a fan).

This is actually normal, I mean, most people don't have subtle and refined musical tastes in general, but for some reason I expected those threads to only revolve around classics, but for each Stevie Wonder/Beach Boys/AC/DC... you will find a random electro-dance/horrible prog rock song which make my ears bleed...

So, gaffers, am I just a pretentious musical elitist? Or is there some kind of new tribe I don't know about who is some kind of cold hearted pure 'sound' lovers? Are you one of them?

Tell me :P

Guys, I need new solid headphones that are above all, super comfortable (and not more than $120).
suggestions ? I had the Dr.Dre beats and yeah, I regret the moment I thought about buying them.

I would imagine that it's more about the subjective quality of the recording as opposed to the objective quality of the song. That said you did list AC/DC as a 'classic' so...

so i got a pair of sennheiser hd 429s in the mail, but the right channel has no output whatsoever. is there anyway to fix this or do i have to send this shiz back

So true. I really have to get around to selling my M50s or trading someone for the Q40s one of these days. But the M50s look so nice.....

Tossing up between the Momentums and the R1s at the moment for my "portable" cans. R1s winning at the moment. Found a pair on ebay for $254 but that seems suspiciously cheap.

Lol I have absolutely no idea why or how you think liking mainstream stuff like Beach Boys and ACDC equates to being pretentious or elitist. Do you even know what those two words mean?

It's time to face facts. Your taste in music is just as mainstream and mundane as the other billions of casual music listeners out there. LOL

Anyway I would say most audiophiles are music lovers, pretentious and elitist or not.

For me, I only became one after I began looking at equipment that would make my favourite band, Dream Theater, sound as good as possible.

Sony MDR-1R

That's probably what you want.
You're the motherfucking man, thank you. Love that this joints still have that solid SONY signature(amazing mids)with a little more push on the Lows, but nothing to overdose like other brands.

Love the effort SONY put into research for this cans for this digital age we're in, but also not forgetting the past(they showed a graph on how much music has changed in the past 30 in production sound). I still have another pair of MDR V6(for mixing)but this will go great for gaming and listening to music. Props my dude.

Yeah I have a pair of MDR-7509s which is the big brother of the much more common MDR-7506 (7056 being on-ear, 7509 being around-ear), and they're basically the same housing as the V6 with higher quality drivers and a coiled cable. They've served me well for about 10 years.

I love using the MDR-7509 for film audio mixing. I have no problem with voice quality with the 7509. While others pick up too much bass. Some say this cans are flat. To me, they're warm :-)

For those getting the MDR-1Rs, do let us know how you like them. I'm tempted to pull the trigger myself, I've got a pair of the ZX-700s and while I quite enjoy them, from what I hear the 1Rs sound better and have a slight bass bump to them as well. The silver/brown aesthetic is also drop-dead sexy IMO.

My M9s just arrived and I can't say I'm terribly impressed with the sound quality. Now, these are replacing Bose earbuds, which I had come to assume were shit, but the M9s are noticeably tinnier and there's less bass. Is the lack of burn-in a problem, or was I just expecting too much from these?

edit: actually, they might be growing on me...
