Vita PSN Game And Service Thread

I mentioned this in the RO thread but. . . Why can reviewers rate games they haven't even completed? That'd be like a movie reviewer watching half a movie and saying WELP IT SUCKS, DON'T SEE IT. I can understand if the movie is unwatchable or the game is unplayable but RO is definitely playable, and lots of fun.

I had my rant about reviewers in the RO thread already, but, I'll just say... it is shameful.

I don't get the point of some reviewers. They don't lend useful criticism or deep, professional insight. Many simply offer childish rants, that seem unable to grasp the purpose and intent of the software they're holding in hand.

I don't want every game praised endlessly, but is seeing someone "qualified" give an informed opinion about a game too much to ask?

Why hand it to someone who hates the genre, can't see past their own pre-concieved notions, or basically writes in a "I wish I was doing anything but THIS!" tone? It does the readers no good, and lowers the image of the review providers.

If a reviewer can't be trusted to finish the game, turn a snippet of their views into a "viewpoint" or "mini-review" like old magazines used to do, and give the full game to someone who actually cares enough to treat the product correctly.

Well, exactly. A lot of the pricing depends on projected sales. Obviously at the moment Sony is still treating PSM as a bit of a beta - taking developer and user feedback and trying to improve it before really marketing it. I'd assume at this stage, projected sales aren't incredibly high. The amount of devices open to PSM software at the moment is very small, as are the amount of territories the game is available in. So obviously the price has to be higher to justify the game. If they don't believe enough people would buy it at 99p to cover the price difference, they won't do it.

Of course, when the programme opens up to everyone in November, and when the service begins to roll out more, we may see the pricing shift downwards somewhat. There will also be a hell of a lot more competition then (as the content is tightly controlled at the moment) - giving more motivation for developers to price their games as low as they feel they can.

Looking forward to that! Didn't realise it was so soon, will wait and see what comes along.

Can't imagine they wouldn't think enough would buy most of these at 99p...especially when there weren't many games out and a bit of dry spell when PSM was out! - They looked pretty good too, and I'd expect so many less to buy it for a higher price if they didn't think people would be into it... :S But yeah I know what you mean... guess we don't really know how well they're doing anyway!

Also don't anyone hold back with framerate issues on NFS/ AC - any issues when fighting/running through busy towns? Someone said it didn't affect gameplay in an earlier post...is that the case?

VanWinkle should be posting a new NFSMW video too soon (he said previous page near the end)..

Thought Sandy screwed me up being that GameStop didn't open and all but just found out I don't have classes until the 5th. Starting tomorrow Liberation and NFS will be mine to sex. After that I will screw Declassified in the ass. Then 5 days after I will unleash my baby gravy on my shiny Wii U. Ooooh man its a good time to play games. Sorry I just took my crazy meds.

Holiday season soooo busy. Colin did the same thing with Dokuro, he got like 80 levels in and reviewed it.

IGN gave RO a 5 wtf. I'm sure the game warrants more than a 5 out of 10. Those guys are gonna crucify Declassified. If this gets a 5 I think Declassified is gonna score a 2. Watch them Score SS a 7

I suppose it depends on whether or not the core gameplay really changes after a certain point... getting 15 hours into FF13 and then reviewing it and playing Lumines for 2 hours and reviewing it, even if you haven't done everything are two entirely different things, right? You've gotten most of a feel for whether or not Lumines is good after a couple hours, you can recommend or not, remark on most of the features, etc. But if you were to review FF13 before you got to the open world part, or even before you opened up a large majority of the roles for the battle system... that wouldn't be right.

Alright, here's the NFS MW video I said I would upload. Very good quality with direct feed sound. Gives you a good idea what it looks and sounds like. I drive around a little, show off custom soundtracks, enter a race, oh, and crash. A LOT. It was hard to drive while looking at a weird angle from the tripod, so excuse that. I have to go back to that race that I failed at. Got so mad when a crashed into the van right before I hit the finish line, lol.

^ <3 Thanks, watching now.

Excellant, thanks for posting that - I can see it that it still looks like a lot of fun to play, will have to get it. Damn that coming £40 digital price..

Yep, not as many traffic cars, not native resolution and no wet ground look but the same map, similar/same? handling - just seems to be an overall similar experience to the fun I've had with the PC version - gotta have that on vita.. £40 though the bastards.

Had to mute during the second song's screams though :P You should definitely post it in the NFS MW Vita footage thread:

Damn Bro that looks good. Awesome video and nice music.

Most people I know love the screaming, I say do it in your own time :P

Also at the end of the race
when you drop the vita from disappointment
, classic ;)

I really love my Vita. One thing that bothers me is the lack of marketing for the games. Its really something that pisses me off because we are the ones taking videos and getting them out to the masses. We buy games based off of shady reviews which may be biased. Why is it so hard for developers and publishers to market Vita games? Be proud of your work and promote it that's what any serious developer should do. So sad that most are only created to do nothing more than take money and start on next years version. Just venting.

Marketing costs money and Vita games are expected to have gross sales of a couple of hundred thousand units at best. You cannot reasonably spend millions on marketing even when you can only expect a couple of million in earnings in the best case scenario. Let's be realistic here, this is handheld gaming, they already earn less per copy of the game, on a smaller user base. I think it is unreasonable for us to expect games that have a similar production values & a similar marketing budget as games released on the HD twins or the PC.

That is true about the adverts and it really does fall mostly on Sony to get things going at this point but they are going out of their way to avoid any footage or news of the vita versions of games. Embargoes(sp?) and that.

It doesn't cost that much to send a review copy or put up a youtube trailer. They want to prevent people from seeing the difference between vita and console...and just buy it based on the name. That will screw over a lot of people every now and then and it is much better to be upfront and realistic imo.. it doesn't help when they get smacked after buying it full price (modnation). AC sound issues from the looks of things..and slight lack luster visuals in NFS..guess they'd rather do it the underhanded way. I'm sure people will enjoy the games as well, but this way is dishonest and leaves a bad taste imo.

Yea, Sony not putting out Press versions of the vita with HDMI out is really not helping things. Handheld developers must market their games on a shoestring budget, and proper coverage from the gaming press can really help them out a bit.

I just edited in some more, but basically with some of these embargoes* it's pretty clear they don't want people to see the footage till it's on the stores...

I want quality. And I won't pay full price if it isn't - and after learning my lesson with modnation, I'm checking and so should everyone else (who doesn't want to have fun now). People are used to shoddy releases. If you're going to make it, make it impressive and without major issues (I'd count shitty sound as one).

*I mean with NFS and AC at least they had demo units at conventions but that of course isn't anywhere near enough... S&S A-S RT so far haven't shown a single screenshot. I heard it was a port of the HD console versions whereas the 3DS version was made from the ground up but not sure if it's confirmed..anyway :/

Not to the extent of the bigger consoles and I agree about the financial aspect. I'm just saying a little clip of what the game will offer on a game site or on game informer I'm sure won't break the bank. I mean we had nothing for NFS Lego LoTR etc. No one needs to spend millions. Marketing on Facebook twitter YouTube etc shouldn't cost millions. Just saying these are sights that millions of people view daily. We live in a new age of media convergence. Getting info out is extremely easy and affordable. Shit leak something Rip stone and a few others market their games through sites like twitter and Facebook I mean how much do you think it costs to slap a video or a jpeg on Twitter page? studio Liverpool made the beautiful WipeOut 2048 and told people about upcoming DLC through social networking sites.

Need For Speed is the real deal folks. I recommend playing with headphones on. I'm using the Sony Pulse myself.. Pure adrenaline rush!

Go to Activisions twitter page. All day they boast about Black Ops 2 " are you ready for Black Ops 2?" " have you pre ordered to get nuke town " not one tweet about Declassified and it cost nothing to post on Twitter. I've got pretty tough skin but it bothers me that I spent 350 bucks for my Vita and I don't even know what I'm buying beforehand. When the HD twins are much less and you know 6 months out that the games will be coming with a set of dentures for memaw damn it gets quiet when I post lol. Nobody likes me :( lol

I honestly don't blame them. Call of Duty is known for being a consistently good quality series, and if Declassified is the disaster it appears to be, pushing it too hard could backfire.

Which goes back to what I said previously. Games are only being made to rake in quick bucks where we the consumers are basically being looked at as sheep with money in our hands. No respect. Take the time to deliver a masterpiece and give the people their money's worth. Don't say hey here's CoD for 50 dollars but we ain't gonna tell you why it costs ten less than the ps3 version or why you should get it. Its somewhat insulting if you actually love to play video games and spend a lot of money yearly on the gaming industry. Its like oh so and so gets announced then everything goes silent and you say hey I gotta go to Walmart and get some socks and you see a new Vita game on the shelf like wtf.Hardboiled chicken had a cool demo at Comic Con and got no coverage.

OK bros, need help here.

1. Little kings story
2. AC L
3. Ragnarok Odyssey

Which one? I need to buy one to pass $100.

I would do:
1. NLKS
2. RO
3. AC:L (hard copy over DD for collecting)

In other news finally decided on LBP to round out the October promotion...came out to $101.78

dang it, can't select my city as home city in Smart As since I'm not in the NA/EU

using near puts me in Portland as nearest even though the near app works correctly for me

I wouldn't say it's consistently good. Personally, I only liked MW and MW2 and I know a decent number of people who feel the same.

Hopefully Declassified is better than people expect, since the bar is being set really low. :lol

Here's why I know CoD is consistently good. I don't like any of them, and to me, they all look like the same game. I'm not a fan of the series but I can tell they are all relatively on par with each other, at least to the average CoD player.

When I look at Declassified, I see a game that is clearly not as good as the others.

You'd be surprised at how many people play the CoD games and think they're garbage, even though they sell well. I know a guy who put like 60+ hours into the Black Ops multiplayer and he remarked one day "Why do I even play this, I hate this game." And the reason he played it? "All my friends play it, so I play it with them."

They don't buy it because it's good. They buy it because it's the new CoD.
And I've platinumed or 1000/1000 and put god knows how many hours into CoD games. I didn't like most of World at War, and after MW2 ended up getting hacked for the online component, I said "screw this, I'm done... next game is a classic Treyarch entry and Infinity Ward is not really the same."

I'm actually optimistic about Declassified because it's NOT a Treyarch game and Resistance Burning Skies was about 10x better than impressions led me to believe. The multi seemed like a good first attempt at an FPS with multi on a handheld... so there's hope, I think, especially if expectations are low. Will I buy it? Probably not until it's in the bargain bin and only if the reviews are decent. But I still hope it's a surprise in a good way. :)

lol well I don't know how to respond to that :P

^ Both have good points tbh. They could have promoted it more but I guess they just played it safe to prevent too much outrage - people do have high expectations these days and they don't think it's quite on par with those like you said...and cod fans can get angry I bet.

Finally picked up a vita today since I was waiting for the AC bundle. I had never seen one in person and good lord that screen is gorgeous. Only problem I'm having so far is PSN is so slow, it took me a good 2 hours to download Ragnarok which isn't a very large game. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far, reminds me of PSO with more modern gameplay.

I only played a bit of AC but it looks decent so far, it took me a while to get used to the controls though. Merging counter/grab into one button was kind of confusing at first.

Well, received some extra money and picked both NFS:MW and AC:L, both digitally.

NFS:MW is impressive. Loving it.
I kinda regret AC:L, it's a good effort but not good enough, the frame rate is horrible, a lot of visual glitches and gameplay has never been AC strong point. Wish I had picked RO instead.

Maybe I'm not as sensitive to it, but the framerate in ACIII:L seems perfectly fine to me. No where near the realm of unplayable to me.
Still early on, though.

The initial section was horrible for me. I'm playing the DD version with the patch, what about you?

I'm playing the retail version with the patch. I'm definitely not seeing any framerate drops I would classify as horrible. It's running pretty smooth for me, so far.
