Facebook election meltdowns and tasty, salty tears |OT|

On the subject of embarrassing statements by Mormons this election season, I am SO TIRED of seeing people on my friends list make flippant statements that Obama's reelection means that the end of the world is that much closer.

Luckily, my American Foreign Policy teacher here at BYU has a good sense of humor, so at the start of the class he said, "I attended BYU in 1976, which was an election year, and I don't know if you guys know this or not, but Jimmy Carter was the anti-Christ."

Anyway, I really do tire of the "haw haw end of the world imminent because Obama was elected" going on.

But Orson Scott Card, over the past five years or os, has done everything in his power to make it increasingly impossible to separate his work from his views.

I just try and ignore that as best I can, because that's the only thing you really can do in that situation.

And mostly try to block out the fact that I ever read Empire.

I'm sure someone didn't like my pro-Obama updates, but nobody I give a shit about would do anything about it.

"Facebook, Twitter, all tools of the left. Use them against them!"

Like how Kristen Neel used it?

Damn this thread scares the hell out of me no, better save the link for whenever Korey makes another pro-US thread.

Normally, I don't give a shit about the political leanings of authors or celebrities I like. Adam Baldwin and Craig Nelson are right-wing nuts? Fine by me.

But Orson Scott Card, over the past five years or os, has done everything in his power to make it increasingly impossible to separate his work from his views.

Yeah, normally I'm able to compartmentalize--the work is not the author and the author is not the work--but this piece of work is not something I can bring myself to overlook.

I'm not usually one to take pleasure in others' pain, but I can't say that I mind seeing such a man driven to frustrated rage at a rebuke dealt to his ideals--if being powerless to threaten my health, welfare, and ability to participate fully in society makes him angry, then so be it. His anger is simply the dividends from investing in my fear.

Being the opportunist that I am, I started the night at a Romney party – because I hoped he would win. But when it became apparent he wouldn’t, I headed over to an Obama party that I knew of, met a sweet young thing who was happy to have turned 18 early enough to vote in this election. I took her home so that I could add to her night of firsts…

I learned long ago – hope for the best, but always take advantage of the situation. So I’ll continue to take advantage of the situation which is this train-wreck.

I cannot believe this guy met an 18-year-old who fucked him on the first night they met, and he assumes that she was a virgin. 18-year-old virgins are pretty rare anyway, but anyone who's made it to that age without banging a guy is probably not going to sleep with some dude she hasn't even been on a date with.

Either it's true and the guy is clueless, or it's just a lie meant to make women who like Obama sound like whores. Probably the latter.

I can't believe how many people are crying because of religion "he doesn't like God blablalbal". Makes me sick fucking loonies.

That Maddow bit is amazing, all she had to do was play Fox talking heads predicting a landslide for Romney and then grin.

Those tears.

I'm having trouble telling if those are actual tears or a parody of the tears.
This is a comic from May, so definitely a parody. Nevermind stuff like this or this.

Actually read through enough of the archive and you'll have a good enough feel for the humor style to tell instantly.
I admit I was fairly bummed out in the days immediately after Bush's victory in 2004, and probably said a few mildly hyperbolic remarks. Fortunately this was before social media really exploded.
Ironically I think many of the same reactions make a lot more sense in the context of Bush being re-elected. Move to another country? Clearly because America's not liberal enough for you, so you pick a more liberal country! Afraid of what his continued presidency will bring? He DID get us into two wars in the Middle East! It's also likely why this bellyaching is more insufferable: many of us who were either more left leaning or BECAME left leaning as a direct result of distaste for Bush managed to get through it, so they can get through Obama. Especially since the fear mongering seems far more extreme this time.

i just came here to say this about the internet in general, in response to that youtube video.
I've said this for a while now, but kids really need to be taught a class on the consequences of the internet and how what you put online will probably stay there throughout your lifetime in some archive somewhere.

Sounds like his full of shit.

I find it telling that it was posted on a site called 'Christian mens defence network.'

Seriously fucking warped.

And I bet she describes herself as a christian

EDIT: Looking at her twitter her comments are no surprise. 'Great' parenting nevertheless.

She's still in High School and acting like she's a taxpayer. Probably just spouting off what she heard from her parents.

A quick Google search finds many of these people even outside their accounts. Hopefully some of them get scholarships and/or jobs taken away for these stupid comments showing their true personalities.

Oh, good. This can get interesting real quick.

Time to make her famous like KONY

But I don't recall myself or anyone I knew reacting on a level anywhere close to this. And this was when I was living in looney liberal San Francisco. It was more a collective feeling of "well, this sucks."

I expected tears, but some of these reactions are just simply complete meltdowns.

Yup. There's a difference when you have the facts at your disposal as opposed to just a bunch of rhetoric designed to scare the ever-loving shit out of you. By seeking out the facts from credible sources, you come away with an actual, logical understanding of a given situation. However, if you have nothing but scary talking points guiding you, then everything for you will be rooted in emotion and you'll have nothing to ground you to reality. The outlandish reactions we're seeing are, imo, the effect of Fox News neglecting to educate their viewers. It's a truly scary world for them, and they have no means to see it any other way.

It's not neglect on the part of Fox. It's calculated.

Basically a primitive form of mind control that works on a segment of the population.

Republicans really do take to the "fuck you got mine" lifestyle don't they?

Except the irony is the vast majority of Republicans done have theirs at all. That's the stupidity of it all.

If a rich person abuses and takes advantage of the system, they're intelligent and business minded. If a poor person does it, they're a leech and detrimental to society.

Checked out Jenny Guinn's twitter and she's one of the many tear-shedders who is doing us all a favor by talking about how much "she loves red" and so on. That's great, we don't even have to create new posters for them!

One friend of mine on facebook who in the weeks prior has been constantly posting intelligent garbage about Obama.

Like I would say jobs are up.. and he would reply thats not the real unemployment number "Real unemployment is 16%"

Or I would say, he saved the Auto Industry... and he would reply that "Obama committed a crime and stole money from bond holders in order to give money to unions."

So nothing about muslims or birthers or anything...

Just went to check his facebook ... and its gone... LOL he deactivated his account.... Even so, i could still taste the tears lol..

My contribution is from the racist ignorant "dad-spam" that some people (white men) at my place of employment receive.

For many of us, last night’s election results may appear to be an unmitigated disaster. Forget all the house seats that may have been gained and forget any other local issues that may have been won, because in the end America voted to retain a man with no record who has ties to domestic terrorists, signed the illegal NDAA, and can’t even balance a checkbook. America sent a clear message last night: Hard work, common sense, and individual liberty are no longer listed among its core principles. Those of us who cherish these principles are now in the minority and must face this reality, no matter how difficult the pill is to swallow.

Today we will no doubt face legions of people who will gloat because they see elections as a game to be won and their detractors as enemies to be vanquished. We will continue to be blamed for the current problems of the nation and we will continue to face those who would strip away our possessions to satisfy their vision of noble goals. We will continue to be demonized for working hard, for not relying on others to care for us, and for supporting others who think similarly.

But remember this: We are the people who work hard every day, who face countless challenges every day, and who always come out on top. We have never faced an enemy we couldn’t defeat and no mountain so insurmountable that we couldn’t scale it. We have never resolved to call on the government to rescue us from any situation. It is these traits — the very ones we are scorned for — that will ensure our ultimate victory over such vehement apathy and willful ignorance.

At some point in the future the walls will come crashing down and our economic system will collapse. Last night marks its inevitability, whether it be four years down the road or 20 years down the road. The country’s financial crisis is out of our hands and as terrible a thing it is to accept, accept it we must. We must acknowledge that common sense no longer prevails and that ours is a shrinking island in the sea of irrationality.

But mark my words — when those walls come crashing down, those who voted on pure emotion last night will hold out for hope that the government will rescue them. This is what they expect, and this is all they know. The cold, hard economic reality is that the government will be unable to provide for all its citizens, a truth that has been demonstrated time and time again, and many people will die as they simultaneously beg the government to rescue them with one hand and point a blaming finger at us with the other.

Meanwhile, we will do what we’ve always done: Survive. We will overcome whatever obstacles are presented to us, no matter who sits in an oval office 2,000 miles away, and we will continue to provide for our families even as the construct of society melts around us.

Clearly, this message is intended for those who are self-reliant, sturdy, and capable. But it should also serve as a warning to all those who cannot accept the consequences of their own actions and expect others, like the government, to rescue them whenever anything goes wrong. It is a warning to those who embrace weakness and vilify strength. At some point in the future, you will have to lay down in the bed you’ve made, and nothing you or anybody else can do will save you from it.

We may feel like pebbles caught in a torrential current heading for a waterfall, and we probably are. But maybe we should take a deep breath, sit back, relax, and distance ourselves from the circus unfolding before us. Take care of our families. Keep working hard. Be prepared. Focus on our own lives, and don’t worry so much about all the inmates who have taken over the asylum. After they’ve run their course, caused as much destruction as they possibly can, and utterly destroyed themselves, we’ll rise again with stoic vigilance. Ours is not a mindset that willingly reverts to the peon mindset of the 16th century, no matter how often and how forcefully our leaders expect us to.

So today, as you hear the joyful cries of the doomed New Majority, do not engage in arguments with them. Do not be quick to anger. Do not try to tell them why they are wrong and why their vision lacks humility or common sense. Such plying will fall on deaf ears.

Instead, take heart in the fact that although today may be their day, eventually they will self-destruct. Their time will end, and they’ll come to us for aid as they watch their loved ones die. In that moment, I have no doubts that we will show them more grace than they offered us. America has changed. But we don’t have to. We just have to learn this new game and wait for our moment. Stay strong.

No, it just means you're not a sadist like a some people here. It's cool to be happy Obama won. I certainly am. But to get off on other people's suffering is sick. Hate elections, they bring out the worst in people.

I get off on their suffering because they hate me and my kind and want to go back to a time when my parents and grandparents couldn't even pee in the same bathrooms or drink from the same water fountains, and this is also the sole reason they wanted Romney in the White House, so fuck them.
