Halo 4 Story Spoilers and Speculations

Question does the terminal explain what that female forerunner was talking about with Chief? I forget what she said, but he needed something to defeat the Didact. Also I find it interesting that she said he and also think she meant humankind need to evolve.

She made him immune to the composer.
 
Just finished the campaign and loved it. This and Halo: CE are my favorite campaigns. I like that they killed off Cortana but i would have thought they kept it for 6. Feel kinda sad for Chief now, he just lost his only friend.

Also good that they give him more dialogue, he is still the silent type we all know him to be, but at least hes not awkwardly silent anymore. Also helps he has the coolest male voice there is probally.
 
I still like my original pitch for the Reclaimer Trilogy; Halsey is executed for war crimes, the broadcast of which reaches the remains of the Forward unto Dawn several years after the fact. This pushes an already fragile Cortana into full rampancy, but she manages to hide it from the Chief while directing him into and around Requiem so she can disable the Forerunner safeguards and take control of the planet. She then enters full bitch mode and tries to either move the entire planet or a large part of its armies towards Earth, with the Chief and the former AI construct of Requiem trying to stop her. H4 ends with both parties racing towards Earth.

The rest of the Trilogy is Chief trying to stop Cortana from destroying Earth while saving her from herself. Along the way the AI Construct of Requiem turns out to be not so good either.

First encounter with Didact question:

Master Chief seemed to be completely helpless against Didact's telekinesis(?)... so why didn't he just kill him there?
 
For some reason while playing this game i kept thinking how cool it would be if a Spartan went rogue. And by that i mean a Spartan with the capabilities of chief. Give him a similair black or white suit and make him the villain. A Spartan gone mad because of what they've done to him.

I agree with you. The idea of more "locations" to travel to and eradicate threats is nothing more than turning the franchise into a procedural drama with little to no tying storyline. And I feel like they dropped the ball on Halo 4 in this regard. I understand that they were likely far more interested in Chief and Cortana's core story line and likely wanted to play it safe with everything else during their first go around, so I am hopeful that Halo 5 will continue with a strong story arc for the reclaimer saga. Something that can truly keep me interested past the 5th game and make me want to finish. Halo 4's campaign was servicable but certainly not a game that makes me want to play through a 5th campaign if its more of the same.

What explains why the Covenant suddenly wanted the Didact's balls? They were looking for a forerunner artifact, I think, but they were fighting the Prometheans until they saw the Didact. Wouldn't they know that the Prometheans were the Didact's personal guard?

Or did they just hate them because they are an unfun, shit enemy to fight?

No, there's some still around even Spartan IIs unless I missed something in the later books (although not many at all).

Spartan IIIs and Spartan IVs are more mass produced versions and are adults when they become Spartans.

That covenant faction thinks Didact is a "god."

He's obviously going to "change/evolve' over the course of the series. Plus the Humans are already pillaging Requiem after the main campaign in Spartan Ops. So it's likely they will discover more tech and/or get assistance from the Librarian.

After Halo: CE, they retconned the "last Spartan" thing pretty quickly. A bunch of Spartan-IIs are still alive today, plus there are some Spartan-IIIs made prior to Reach that ended up surviving, PLUS now they are on the Spartan-IV program which uses consenting adults with military experience. The IVs are the ones that show up in the campaign.

The Covenant were on Requiem looking specifically for the Didact, actually. They worship him as the ultimate Forerunner god. They were fighting the Prometheans because they're not just gonna stand there while the Knights slaughter them, they're gonna fight back. Then when Didact shows up, he takes control of all the Prometheans and leads the remaining Covenant.

I think the white flash at the end wasnt the nuke going off it was cortana making the light box. She had said earlier after you arm it there is a very narrow amount of time to escape (as opposed to the nuke going off instantly)
 
So after finishing the game I must say I really enjoyed the story overall. I liked it better than Halo 3 (Which was basically a wrap up of Halo 1+2) and Reach (Couldn't care for the characters because I knew they would die from the start).

Overall, I like the direction they are heading with the story, even if the ending left me scratching my head a little. The part where Cortana "teleported" chief from the Didact's ship was such a rediculous stretch that I wish they had found another way to end the game. You could have just as easily set a timer on the Nuke and hightailed it out - unable to retreive Cortana from the system (Didact did blow up the holo chip Chief was using to store her)

Also quick note on the new enemies: The Prometheans are incredibly boring to fight and too uniform in function. They all are a bunch of bullet sponges.

The crawlers basically all function the same - the seemingly only difference between the crawler classes is that they take more bullets to kill (unless headshotting)

Watchers are frustrating - as soon as they take one hit they try to break LOS. They rarely act offensively, instead causing interruption and fleeing as soon as you attack them.

Knights are nothing but bullet sponges. There is no feedback when their shields are active (at least, not visible enough). They also all act the same, just with different weapons. I wish they had the same diversity as the Elites (Charging sword elite, nimble plasma rifle elite, slow moving fuel rod Elite) but instead they all stand still and shoot at you until they decide to warp away. They will occasionally warp close to melee, but this maybe happened 3 times to me in 2 playthroughs.



TLDR; I like the story over all even if the ending was a little lazily done. Promethean enemies are boring to fight.
 
The one thing I HATE about this story is the same thing I hate about so many other sci-fi stories. The whole humans were a hyper advanced spices but devolved then re-evolved crap. Same in BSG. It's such an fantasy based piece of shit.

Yeah, it seems so strange to me that they would take the already kind of corny Forerunner story and make it cornier by adding in ancient humanity.

Huh, you're right. I wonder why I didn't mind their use of that plot device in this case.
Maybe because Cryptum handled the reveal pretty well (it wasn't used as a shocking plot twist) and it fits well within the workings of the newly reimagined backstory of the universe (Forerunners' tyrannical treatment of other races). It helps that Halo's ancient alien humans didn't do a vote to decide if they should start fucking cavemen instead of being a spacefaring civilization.

The Prometheans are robots built by the Forerunners. The Didact used the Composer to convert masses of ancient humans into digital form and put them into the Promethean bodies in order to create an army capable of fighting the Flood.

Ultimately, though, the Prometheans didn't work, and so they built the Halos. The Forerunners all died when the Halos were fired to kill the Flood, except the Didact who was in that giant ball thing (Cryptum) and his Promethean army remained on Requiem to guard him.

The reason the Forerunners didn't just use the Composer to put themselves in the robots and survive the Halos is because the Composer is imperfect and the "souls" it converted would be fragmented and messed up. That's why the Prometheans don't really act like humans.

He was relieved of command on the Infinity because he was getting in the way of Master Chief. That's why Lasky is captain now.
 
Great game, solid ending. My favorite since Halo 1.

Cortana will be back though I'd assume. They wouldn't completely get rid of her.


EDIT: Anyone have the shot of Chief drifting with Earth in the background as a wallpaper? I need it. Or any of the CG at the end. :P
 
I was disappointed that 343i didn't change much in the gameplay, but more disappointed with this mess of a story. I thought this would be a really good new chapter and come out of the gates flying, but it was so dull, confusing and gave me no reason to care about the situation or the characters.

They failed most in the story aspect. I'm anything but hooked for the next two games.

Pretty much this. It starts strong with an entire artificial planet and a new species to explore, and never really finds anything interesting to do with any of that. The idea of Cortana dying over the course of the game could've been interesting, but they never develop it into anything larger.
 
Just finished it. Meh. Reinforced my opinion that any and all Halo games featuring Chief are just boring, generic nonsense.

Not trying to shit up the thread, because the game was fucking great, I just really don't see the hullabaloo about this mythology. Speaking in terms of singular-narratives, though, I absolutely love ODST, and even though I expected to really hate the story, I found Reach pretty enjoyable. I had some hopes for 4, but the moment Cortana said early on "Don't make a girl a promise you can't keep," and I involuntarily began laughing, I figured the story wouldn't end up being anything interesting. And it wasn't.

Master Chief is the last spartan created by Dr. Halseys program. After that they made Spartan IIIs, which were cost effective orphans of the covenant war. They were quick and dirty with cheap versions of the armor with photo-reflective plates instead of shields. 298 of them died to destroy a covenant ship yard and the mission was deemed a success.

Spartan IVs are now volunteers from veterans and young up and coming promising soldiers who apparently go through a form of the augmentation and wear a cheaper but still effective version of the MJOLNIR armor, shields and all. (I don't get why these guys are called 'spartans' since they aren't trained from birth, the whole point of 'spartans' and how are they receptive to heightened senses after a lifetime with them, and the S-IIs were chosen based on genes as well...but whatever.)

The Covenant are being led by an elite who knows the Forerunner are just another race of aliens, but he finds a secluded colony who didn't get the memo yet and is after a means to take revenge on humans after ONI fiercly interrogates him for trying to rebel against the arbiter, and they murder his wife.

The Prometheans when they're blue are guarding anyone from releasing the diadact, especially the covenant. They're probably more of a 'test' since the librarian hoped someday he would be released, penitent for his crimes. When they are red they're under his control.

He was the best choice politically, had the most experience and what-not. One of the Admirals only agreed to it on the condition that Lasky was his XO as well. They were just waiting for an excuse to remove the guy at that point. Trying to arrest the Galaxies thrice over savior as he's doing it again is probably not going to help anybody in that position though.

She fragmented herself, she could theoretically recover into one piece and still be rampant, she is still in Requeims systems after all. But the Librarian also had a hold of her while she was talking to chief, we still don't know what she did to Cortana, if anything. If I had to guess she helped her along the path to metastability. She has the best chance of any human-made AI of getting there, and forerunner AI only went rampant in the same way a living being might go insane, not after 7 years guaranteed.

By the way, Didact is not dead. They make a point to say that there's a slipspace energy whatchamajig underneath the composer, and he falls into it, escaping the nuke. It's either used to power the composer (what) or its used as an extension cord for power from some other place. Seems like something the Forerunner would do.

Yeah, I haven't read much of Glasslands, but Halsey is weirded out (borderline offended) by S-IIIs. She basically sees them as bootleg Spartans, haha. I can only imagine how she feels about S-IVs.

Has Meta-Stability ever been mentioned in Halo context? Because I don't think it's a concept that exists in this universe.
Halo 4's handling of rampancy seems to differ quite a bit from Marathon's, and it's probably for the best if 343 doesn't retread those old-ass, borrowed plot lines and concepts.

Chief has other friends. I believe Linda and Fred are still alive, or at least they were before I stopped reading the books.

He just doesn't know they're alive, and vice-versa.

Would be cool if they're somehow incorporated them into 5 or 6, that is, if they're still alive obviously.

one of the many ways Bungie didn't follow the books and no one seemed to care. But when 343 has a few things different from the books and Halo 4 everyone throws a fit.

Forerunner AIs so far have only choosen to go 'rampant' or just go insane from 100,000 years of solitude. The Monitors are apparently somehow made up of many humans digitized or something dumb like that, so you can't really blame them. That's also why Cortana has the best chance of coming back, she's the only one made from a fresh living brain. Just like Forerunner AIs were made.

But yeah Mendicant Bias went rampant or chose to go rampant and came back at the end of Halo 3. He was the one that was flying the dreadnought from High Charity and activated the Ark. He was trying to atone for his sins. He was the one talking to you through the Terminals.

Right, but Forerunner AI "rampancy" doesn't have anything to do with the commonly understood pattern of stages. I'm also not convinced that Mendicant Bias's change of heart had anything to do with Meta-Stability, it doesn't really fit any part of its definition. Hell, Cortana having a fully developed personality since day one is enough to shrink the entire concept to just "won't break anymore" and that's just a boring, cheap deus ex machina.

In the book Fall of Reach, Mendez (the guy that trained the Spartan IIs) moved on to train other Spartans. So if he was ever actually regarded as the last Spartan by someone, it was by a character in the story that had no knowledge of what Mendez was up to.

Bungie even used this part of the fiction in Dr. Halsey's journal that came with the limited edition of Halo Reach. In it, they heavily suggested (using Halsey's own thoughts and musings on the matter) that Mendez possibly trained Noble Six team.

So I guess Bungie did follow the book after all. Too bad that info is hidden away in a LE piece of swag. :P
