The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I actually like what's going in sticker star.

I haven't played any other paper mario so I guess I could understand the disappointment if you are expecting something to carry on the mario rpg pedigree.

But, it looks like a fun pick and play for 20-30 minute type game which is exactly what I look for on handhelds.

Watching Brad play Revengence without dodging or running killed me.

The game flows so much better when you just parry bullets, run at dudes, slice them up (aim for the core instead of mashing randomly), and spam the buttons to horizontal/vertical slice.

Had a ton of fun playing it at a show.

Seeing him not running was killing me too, especially after Patrick made note of it after seeing it in the controls screen.

Sticker Star looks fun but the stage setup and lack of deep rpg mechanics makes it seem like something id buy on the eshop for ten bucks ala Dillons Rolling Western or Sakurai Samurai

The boss fight was painful, and that Brad explained the spin mechanic some minutes before didn't help the matters.

Otherwise, looks like a cool game and it really seems the difficulty is going to escalate.

to me it seems like it could become pretty difficult later, based on the fact that you'd have to spend coins to get multiple turns on some bosses, and if you play badly you could very easily find yourself very low on stickers and low on coins

you essentially have an RPG where the enemies can attack whenever, but you have a finite and limited number of attacks, so you have to plan accordingly. With that and the timing-based element, I don't understand the complaints.

Sticker Star has much deeper combat mechanics than the older PM games. It's quite a bit more complex than choose hammer except when the dude is flying.

Vinny "Benedict Arnold" Caravella. What a traitor!

I really, REALLY loved the first two Paper Mario games, even though I generally don't like Mario/Mario games. I did not enjoy the Super Paper Mario on the Wii. I hated how it essentially eliminated the fun party members and got rid of the excellent battle system of thousand year door.

Sticker Star looks like even less of what I would have ever wanted from a Paper Mario game. The battle system being entirely dependent on the stickers seemed really off putting. Not liking the music in the quick look at all. Constantly having to pick up stickers looks like an extremely tedious task just to perform any actions in a fight. The lack of vocal noises from Mario makes the game feel strangely empty and kind of soulless. The initial reveal trailer made me cautious, but this QL has ensured I never touch this game.

It's probably too much for me to be so critical of this game based on the one trailer and this quick look that I've seen, but nothing about this game has rubbed me the right way, from what I've watched thus far. All it does is make me want to replay thousand year door really badly, haha.

It looks perfectly capable, but it is not what I want from these games.
At least, Vinny and Brad kept me laughing through it.

Yea I'm buying it. Didn't really like the Super Paper Mario, but love the older ones. Also, each one has their flaws but the overall package is what usually makes the game.

Congratulations, you've convinced yourself not to try a pretty cool game.
I probably do that all of the time. Then again, the only thing I have for 3DS is Ocarina of Time, and I only got it for the soundtrack. I'm not even sure if I'll be picking an actual 3DS up this December anyways. I'd probably be happier with the 3DS in the long run, but Persona 4 Golden and a prettier Virtue's Last Reward are on the Vita... I just don't know anymore!

As I said in my original post, I was never a fan of mario in general, but the things I liked about the original Paper Mario games seems to be missing from this one.

Yeah, there's a lot in Sticker Star that doesn't really vibe with me. I might pick it up at some point, but the lack of party members and consumable attacks are two things I'm not that into.

I also hated Super Paper Mario, so I'm really really skeptical about Paper Mario releases now, despite adoring TTYD.

I feel the exact same way. Took the words out of my mouth pretty much.

I always thought of Super Paper Mario as as a spin-off to be honest, it's a vehicle for the world flipping mechanic. I really liked it personally, but not as a mainline Paper Mario game, if there's such a thing.

Yeah, there was definitely some really cool ideas in the game, but I just didn't like the combat nearly as much as the prior games. Not to mention the lack of personality with the party member characters was really disappointing. Luigi was pretty amazing in that game, though, haha.

They should do a Quick Look of Frog Fractions.

No.

They should do an Endurance Run of Frog Fractions.

Incredipede appears to use some assets from Fantastic Contraption. I'm assuming it was made by the same people, but it doesn't look like it's as much fun to play.

I decided I would watch the PMSS quick look once I made it past the point where they stopped at, but I've been so addicted, I've gone far beyond. :(

Excellent game so far, very different from the others, but I'm finding that not to be a bad thing at all.

Anyway, I'll give it a watch now!

PS: Kersti is hilarious.

While every year I groan at the inevitable shitty CoD and it's wave of sales, I am very glad that the biggest thing in gaming is the most 'sport' like, unfortunately, it's also the most Bay/Bruckheimeresque, I guess I just don't know which thing is making it the biggest.

Jeff's hate for Zombies in COD still weirds me out. I always enjoyed it more than Spec-Ops.

It's completely understandable, we've had plenty of horde modes this generation. I never understood the infatuation with them in the first place (to the point that now even Dishonored is getting its own horde mode).

What weirds me out is the fact that Jeff apparently thinks the CODBLOPS2 singleplayer campaign is "impressive". I haven't played it yet (will in the next few days), but from what I've seen so far in the Quick Look I'd be hard pressed to point out anything interesting. Especially after playing the fantastic Halo 4.

He couldn't show off the choice stuff which I think is what impressed him.
