Can anyone recommend some good books on LGBT history? Like, not just the civil rights stuff, (though I want that too; Milk, etc.) but also maybe something that takes a look at homosexuality throughout the ages? Like in ancient Rome/Greece, the Middle East, China, and the WW2 era up to modern day?

Are you still looking for recommendations? Though it's not a history book, I found this novel from a popular Japanese author who was gay:

Confessions of a Mask - Yukio Mishima

Sounds like an interesting novel so I'll be reading this.

Have you read it?
Yeah, and lots of Mishima's other stuff

I wouldn't say it gives much insight into homosexuality as a whole, but it does give a very personal (and unusual) insight into a man's understanding of himself

It's a really excellent read, can't recommend it enough

How's the translation? According to an Amazon review it's quite dated. I could read the French or Dutch translation as well.

Yes, I am still looking for recommendations! Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out. :)
I tried reading Confessions of a Mask a while ago and honestly just found it too slow and ambiguous to hold my attention. I'd still recommend it, if only because it's unique and probably unlike anything else you've read, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a gay novel, and I was probably burned a bit operating under the assumption that it was one.

Confessions of a Mask is a fascinating book
Despite not liking it, I think it is too, and just bought a stack of Yukio Mishima's books since the man's life is incredibly interesting--perhaps more interesting than any of his actual novels.

Have you listened to Daphnis et Chloé yet?

I don't remember having any issues with the translation

And I'll echo that it's not really a 'gay' novel, it's just about one man's own understanding of himself

Yeah, it's a lot more introspective than what you'd consider a 'gay' novel, his plight isn't very relatable but it's still really interesting

You should read 'The Sailor who fell from grace with the Sea' next, if you've bought that one, amazing little book.

Wait how does a Gayradar/Gaydar work

It's a form of gay witchcraft.

But mine doesn't work

Muggle.

He does seem like a really interesting person, just from skimming his wikipedia page. He committed suicide by seppuku after a failed coup d'etat? Shit.

Wait how does a Gayradar/Gaydar work

If someone stares for 3-5 seconds or continually glancing at someone.

for example:

Yep. I don't know anything about classical music, but I listened to this recording and while the piece didn't personally move me (and to your credit, I believe you did say that it would different for different people), it was really serene, even during the crescendos. It reminded me quite a bit of A Midsummer Night's Dream, although I can't pin down why.

Reading about crazy people makes me paranoid. Like that pic with several posts of gay people claiming to enjoy spreading HIV... man, it made me want to never ever date anyone again, lol.

It sucks that I was born without the Magical power of the Gaydar : | maybe it's hidden deep inside...

lol Shit I do this : / But's it like staring for 2 seconds and a glance every 8 seconds.

: /

I was going to make a Prostate joke but then I thought that it was in bad taste even for me.

The whole Queer thing for me is just pushing it, I think US culture is obsessed with Political Correctness to the point of being absurd, like doubting about what to think about coprophilia. Its fucking gross thats what it is, and I certainly don't care if I'm offending anyone, because it is fucking gross.

I've been down that line of thought, if I was judged for being gay, and I was called "gross", am I in a position to tell anyone they are gross? I've realized that yes, I am, being gay in no way compares to eating feces. That line of thought only means we still think being gay is not a good thing. I even got to think the same about pedophiles, and how maybe I was like them, I realized I was just still judging myself and thinking I was not a good person, that was simply wrong.

It's a mystery to everyone, specially us nerds. I just hope the love of my life has an extremely good one.

The eye contact works somewhat, but there are plenty of people, gay or straight, that cannot maintain eye contact at all even with someone they like, is not 100% guaranteed to work.

I think feces is disgusting, but it's a well-known fetish, and if people like it and decide to engage in some sort of activity involving it with somebody else who's open to the idea, it doesn't bother me. That's not me being politically correct, just not caring what other people do.

Most of the time I don't even know if I should post what I think because of this political correctness obsession. I just don't get it, it really is absurd.

What's not to get?

People don't want to offend other people. Either out of genuine concern or fear of backlash.

I find that the people who complain the loudest about political correctness, the "get a thicker skin" people, are often the most easily offended when you saying something about them.

I don't want to offend other people, I'm all the time thinking when I'm talking to other people, always worried about not offending. I've been like this for quite some time... Most of the time I completely understand the political correctness, but there are always some situations when I think it gets really absurd. At least to me, sometimes it seems as if people are twisting the words just to find something to complain about.

Just found out about this thread --> feces fetish...

Anyway this political correctness is complicated for an european to deal with, because sometimes we say things that in our countries would be completely harmless but not in America.

It is not surprising that people have these strange fetishes, sex is most of the times best when it is forbidden, nothing screams forbidden like feces.

Anyway Hi everybody!

What sorts of subjects do you talk about where you feel like you're treading on thin ice and people are twisting your intentions? I get that feeling occasionally on GAF, but in person, I've never really had that worry.
