Vita PSN Game And Service Thread

In a perfect world, the 3DS and the Vita would be constantly neck a neck, forcing both companies to always be on edge and actually have a motivation to improve their system. I'd rather neither platform fail. Competition is a good thing.

Even though I don't care for most Nintendo games nowadays, I'm sure people wouldn't mind Nintendo being in "3DS post launch crisis mode" 24/7 instead of "market leader with no rush Wii mode".
 
I'd suspect a big reason why the 3DS is doing better in Japan especially is because everything Japanese fans want is going to be on it. Not just another Pokemon. Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest, lots of quirky, smaller Japanese games.

Vita has a surprisingly great library very early on, but I think like half? Of its best games are western oriented or western developed.
 
It's certainly amusing that the people going around shouting from the rooftops at all the games the 3DS is getting in the Japan don't stop to notice that they aren't exactly getting localized in the west and therefore they'll probably never have a chance to play them.

That's really SCEJ dropping the ball. All those western games coming out first, the Vita really should've just launched in the US first, and then launched in Japan with Gravity Daze as a launch title.

Currently? A place where they use to make sly jokes about the Vita's performance. Sadly it's just not that fun when no one engaging them is actually being affected by the it. So they left for greener parches.

To me, the PSP was awesome because it got a ton of JRPGs, a ton of mid tier western RPGs (LOTR Tactics, D&D Tactics, Untold Legends 1&2, Dungeon Siege, X-men, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Justice League, Silverfall), games like Test Drive Unlimited (free roam around Oahu), 2 Juiced games, Fast & Furious (Free roam around Tokyo, sorta), several NFS, Midnight Club, games like Grand Theft Auto, Gun Showdown (free roam Western), Star Wars Battlefront, Syphon Filter, etc.

Most of these games didn't quite work on the PSP, but they could on the Vita, it's got the power and the controls. But no one seems to even try to do these things on the Vita, only EA with NFS has really tried to put a console game on it. Even Uncharted/AC:L come up short compared to their console versions, though at least they put effort into the games. But not being a console gamer, I don't care about Drake or AC. Especially Drake.

Mind you, the 3DS isn't all that much better, but at least it gets first tier Nintendo games (which are big, to put it mildly), Monster Hunter, and a version of my favorite GBA game, Ultimate Card Games (confusingly named Classic Games Overload).

But speaking of the West, specifically, it's hard to understate how popular the FPS genre is. CoD: BLOPS2 and Halo 4 have just sold millions of copies. Yet the Vita has only 2 FPSes released in its first year, both by the same developer, both critically panned and arguably less ambitious than PSP FPSes (some of which managed 32 people online at once, Medal of Honor 2).

edit: Anyway, I like my Vita, I just wish it had more games I wanted to play on it. Even most of my PSP games don't work.

There were a couple of 'cut the noise' remarks on wiiu threads,one was even locked but how come another vita is doomed thread which is the same damn thing as the media create ones was necessary?
 
When only one out of three of your major divisions is actually trying to sell the Vita (SCEE), the poor sales shouldn't be surprising. SCEJ has done nothing to help the Vita in Japan, and SCEA acts hostile to the thing. Hell, they only gave their newly launched portable a token mention at E3 for crying out loud! Pretty piss poor way to instill confidence in your machine among developers and consumers.

I love the Vita as much everyone else in this thread, but Sony has not acted as a good steward for the thing.

Only because the Japanese killer IPs aren't out yet.

Kidding aside, I do hope that AC: Liberation's relative success (according to Ubisoft) leads the way to show that there's money to be made from quality Vita games. I mentioned other before, but instead of relying on spin-offs of console games, they should be working on more original IPs for their handheld line. Make it so there are series worth investing in. Gravity Rush and Tearaway are a good start, but why there isn't an Invizimals Vita game in development is beyond me.

Either Wii U fans are MORE sensitive ... or they just have a larger team of management supporters :p

Then again a Doom thread comes with the Nintendo territory.

Well the thread you're referring to is a different situation. People were going completely off-topic there, which is why it got locked.

This 3DS:Vita thread is about sales and people are definitely talking about sales in there!

lol sensitive,sry dude i would like the vita to sell more so we have more games but i wouldn't bat an eye if this piece of plastic would stop selling one day,i just care for the games.

If you're indirectly asking about why this new thread deserved to exist, it's because not everyone follows the MC threads on a weekly basis so when something major happens, it gets a new thread. It's pretty much like everything else on this forum.

(Don't ask me to get involved in the argument about whether this particular bit of news should be considered "major" or not -- that's not up to me to decide)

He's pointing out how there is two threads that serves the same purpose ... although one could argue the the one is more aimed at getting a rise out of people than actually talking about sales.

Because 3DS has the software that sells systems, and Vita simply doesn't. That's not a slight to the quality of the platform's library, or the amount of games in it. The truth of the matter is that the Dokuro's of the world aren't going to sell hardware.

Right, but that's the part I don't get. I'd much rather play Dokuro than, say, Paper Mario: Sticker Star. I own both and I find Paper Mario tedious and actually enjoy Dokuro. Never mind Little Big Planet, Gravity Rush and other games. I know these are all "opinions", but this is one situation where I don't understand why the 3DS is killing the Vita outside of price. There aren't very many good games on the system as far as I can see. Unless there are a ton in Japan. I don't see it in the US. I haven't completed 1 game on the 3DS and the only games I've liked were NSMB 2 and SM3DL.

Casual gamers don't care about game quality so much as recognizable characters.
 
I honestly don't understand the appeal of Animal Crossing. If ya'll want to do chores and have me boss you around we can do that for free ...
 
It's not even the casual gamer argument. What the DS has, it recognised branding, it is a name that parents and the casual gamer can trust. It has a crap load of games aimed at parents, grandparents etc, with book collections, puzzle collections and safe characters in family friendly games.

The Vita, despite being an excellent bit of kit, doesn't have the core values as a brand that the DS has, so will be overlooked by a large demographic. Sony need to get a load of cheap 69p style apps on there, an eBook reader, etc. Really hammer home the things that will sell it to the parents and casual fans.

Anyway. I love Dokuro, and I love Paper Mario.

That's a big if it seems like. I wouldn't say the 3DS doesn't have a good library. I'd say the Vita library appeals to me more.
 
Okay I have a question about save games. I'm pretty sure I know how they work, but I just want to make sure.

I'm planning on selling Gravity Rush and Wipeout tomorrow because I'll be getting them for free anyway next week. And I'll use the credit towards a 32gb card.

Is all the save data stored in the bubbles? So I'm safe to sell the cards, and my save data will still be intact?

While this IS true, making a disconnect between quality and the primary Nintendo character franchises is a stretch. It's a winning combination for Nintendo.

There's definitely something about it though. I played the GC game for a good number of hours before coming to the realisation that I was doing chores (i.e. Menial tasks set by others, for little personal gain and certainly not fun). Haven't touched the games since.

To be safe, you should back up the bubbles on a PC/PS3, since the digital versions will likely overwrite the "retail" bubbles.

Or if you're patient, wait for PS+ and back 'em up that way.

All I meant is people aren't going to care that Dokuro is a better game than Paper Mario. They recognize Mario and therefore they go with that.

Just like people won't care if Battlefield 3 is a better shooter than Call of Duty. The perception is Call of Duty is better because everyone knows what it is.

It clearly doesn't hurt that the games themselves are still very good, but how good a game is isn't as important to the casual person.

If this were completely true, then Uncharted, AssCreed, and CoD would be knocking everyone's socks off on Vita right now. These are three of the biggest series of the generation. (And at least two of them are pretty good games too)

I think the truth of the matter is, the West just largely doesn't give a shit about handhelds anymore. Whatever market exists for them here is centred largely around Nintendo properties, and they have flocked to the 3DS in whatever small numbers they can, making it an extremely modest success outside Japan.

The time of the DS is over, nobody is going to capture that success in the West again, except for Apple.
