masterfully crafted - a timeless piece of cinema. studied this at one point in an aesthetics class, which has increased my appreciation for this film threefold

Although it's really well made, the movie overall was very dumb - the first third of the movie is Ripley refusing to go back to the planet because she knows the aliens have overpowered the colony, yet later agrees to go wipe them out with an army of 12 dudes.. also every time they walk into a room, the whole area has automatically been "cleared" and Ripley is safe to come in. Cue the aliens. Lots of other stupid shit but not worth discussing

The movie opens up with the death of the little girl that RIpley has been trying to save for the entire duration of the second movie, so it is pretty awesome in my book. however, because this movie uses cgi, it has aged by far the worst out of all them. Still, fairly well made and entertaining

Alien+Resurrection+(1997).jpg

Again, follows the trend of being well made, but being pretty dumb

I thought this movie was very good, and thought provoking. Visuals are clearly on another level - and I enjoyed the mythological references.

Prometheus is one of my biggest disappointments ever. I was just too hyped.

Pretty much. The marketing was SO GOOD and then I felt the theater feeling terribly let down. It wasn't necessarily BAD, but just mediocre compared to what I was anticipating.

If the movie was just about David walking around the ship and practicing his jumpshot, I think it would have been far more fascinating.

This film mastered creating suspense and tension. A true classic.

Gtfo!!

Also, Avengers is far superior to Prometheus. It succeeded completely in accomplishing what it set out to do: entertain. That was one of my top theater experiences ever. Joss for the win.

I forgot to take Prometheus back to Redbox, so I might have it this whole weekend. Fuck. Maybe I'll rewatch it. I should quit thinking about it, though, since that makes me like it even less.

It's basically just shitty characters doing stupid things. Having not seen the Aliens onward, maybe this wouldn't work, but I don't understand why Prometheus couldn't have been about
the team awakening an Engineer or two to fucking HELP them against the evil tentacle-things. It's of very limited appeal watching idiotic characters bumble about getting themselves killed.

And I don't really recall any particularly impressive visuals, either, to be honest.

The "witty banter" in Avengers was a weakness after a while. Every character ended up sounding the same and by the end the dialog was almost purely quip-trading.

A Prophet (2009)

Seen both of them. If they are popular here in the states I probably watched them.

That's Joss for you.

Are we being serious? Prometheus is intellectually stimulating, while the plot of Aliens is stupid as shit. I just watched the trailer for Prometheus though, and I can understand why people were let down due to expectations; you just need to re-watch the movie from a different perspective and not expect a stupid horror flick

What the fuck... explain

I just like sci-fi more than 80's action films. I think Cameron took something really interesting in Alien and just threw all the horror and sci-fi out the window. What Scott does is much more interesting and his cinematography is gorgeous.

Alien > Prometheus > Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) = Aliens

I'm not trying to start something here (even though my post earlier would say otherwise), this is just what I think.

That's Joss for you.

Since you just mentioned French films in general, I don't really have an idea what types of films you like, but here are some recent French films that I enjoyed:

36th Precinct
La vie en rose
He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not
OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies
Blame it on Fidel
A Secret
The Adversary
The Chorus
Read My Lips
C.R.A.Z.Y.
Hidden
Tell No One
The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Harry, He's Here to Help
Point Blank
Sleepless Night

Look them over and see what tickles your fancy?

I'm sorry, but no matter how good looking it was, Prometheus was a bigger stinker than Avengers. The stupidity in some of the scenes/characters was too much to handle for me.

While I agree that the crew in Prometheus was the worst and most incompetent crew ever assembled, what the film was grasping at is probably its saving grace along with the visuals. It's instantly a more interesting film than The Avengers ever could be, despite how flawed it is (not much point in outlining its faults again here, they're all widely accepted by now). I get where you're coming from though.

But I'll take an attempt at good sci-fi over what The Avengers was. That movie was just a way to get a bunch of characters on screen at the same time for Marvel fans, which is fine. It didn't pretend to be anything more than that unlike Prometheus. So I guess those who are preferring it are of the view that at least it succeeded in what it set out to be.

But I just have little interest in The Avengers or superhero movies these days, whereas with Prometheus - even although it's frustrating, there's a good movie in there somewhere. The design, world, ideas and Fassbender's android performance (I like a good android performance), not to mention an inextricable link to the greatest ever sci-fi horror film, instantly makes it a more interesting experience in my book.

not seen Lila Says, but Bicycle Thieves has that title surely?

You'd have to have watched it to get the joke :)

Lila says is not about bicycles at all, but one bicycle scene stands out for the unsuspecting viewer...

Edit : I failed it's not even a bycicle it's a moped.

Okay Gaf. Contemporary French film suggestions. Pre-2011. Go!

Probably you already saw them but:

Summer Hours.
L'Auberge Espagnole, Russian Dolls (not very recent). Chinese Puzzle next year should be the third of this series.
The Kid with a Bike.
and definitely A Prophet.

Don't know where to post this, but is it just me or is 2014 shaping up to be rather great?

- Bond 24
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
- RoboCop
- Captain America 2
- The Hobbit 3(?)

What else?

Also, when is the Oscars usually?

How is 2013 looking?

Let's make it best movie featuring mopeds. There's the monologue you're to referring to but also the pretty amazing scene when they're driving around the harbour and Air's 'Run' plays. I listened to that song all the time during the summer of 2006.

Alien vs Predator: Requiem > all

edit: I saw Avatar in 3D. My first experience with a 3D TV. I still hate wearing sunglasses that dim the colors, but the 3D in the movie is really well done.

I saw Shutter Island finally. Man was I blown away, everything about that movie was almost perfect, from plot and acting to score, I had to make sure and look up that the ending was what I thought it was but it all was executed greatly, definitely 9/10
